Pete S Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 I don't mean real acetates, I mean the ones we used to get made up, 2 tracks for a fiver back in the 70's. I've just found one containing side 1 - dynatones - the fife piper side 2 - chubby checker - cu ma la be stay this must surely date from 1969 or 1970? You just can't believe that either of these was ever rare but in those days I don't think there were any imports. I also remember having one with Bill Blacks Combo - Josephine and a Capitols LP track, circa 1970

I also remember having one with Bill Blacks Combo - Josephine and a Capitols LP track, circa 1970 The Year Before I Started Work, I Was Still Playing Records At The Youth Club. The Fife Piper & Cu-Ma-La-Be-Stay Were Regular Plays By The Older Lads. Imports Were Just Starting To Appear Around This Time 1969 to 1970. Could Well Imagine This Rare Enough At The Time Via Mainly U.K. Copies. Soul Time Was Another Being Heavily Played & Tell Her Dean Parrish.
Mach Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 first emi, i got off a guy in the back bar at wigan was matt lucas, baby you better go go" and a original yvonne daneils on sterling all for the pricely sum of £1.50..wish i,d kept it.
Citizen P Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 I'm pretty sure that it was from somewhere in Nottingham, that I had an EMI disc LP made for about a fiver for 12 tracks, selected from a list of the days top tunes. Wish I knew what happened to it . Tony
Soul-slider Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 I had one with Eddie Holland - I'm On The Outside Looking In / blank. Still got Candi Staton - Now You've Got The Upper Hand / Oscar Perry - (can't remember the title, but that 70's thing on PERRITONE?)
Pete S Posted April 17, 2009 Author Posted April 17, 2009 I found a 10" acetate in the garage last week, inbetween a load of old albums in a box that hadn't been opened in years, and the tracks were bobby paris - i walked away lou roberts - ten to one johnny hendley - my baby came from out of nowhere and a mystery track THE EPITOME OF SOUND - INTO YOUR ARMS thought that sound interested so I played it and it was...anyone remember? Carol & gerri - How can I ever find the way. I estimate that one to date from June 1978.
Rbman Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 how do you date them? i've got one with I've been hurt on one side and I've got someething good on the other
Codfromderby Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 i found one in an odd collection once with major lance aint no soul on one side and i,m sure it was humphry stomp on the other side, however worst one i had with boo on you vocal/inst, strangest one i had was labelled i like to party alpaca phase three, but played the chase is on johnny howard, this was an emi lp with about four miscuts of astral trip on it and tears the lee roye tune by jr bailey
Pete S Posted April 17, 2009 Author Posted April 17, 2009 how do you date them? i've got one with I've been hurt on one side and I've got someething good on the other Just by whats on them really - like 1972 with that one you mention

Gigs Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 I had one with Eddie Holland - I'm On The Outside Looking In / blank. Still got Candi Staton - Now You've Got The Upper Hand / Oscar Perry - (can't remember the title, but that 70's thing on PERRITONE?) can you give me any info on my Eddie Holland & the Checkmates on Advance Records Dj -Lonely lover \ blank I think its a Emi disc?
Pete S Posted April 17, 2009 Author Posted April 17, 2009 can you give me any info on my Eddie Holland & the Checkmates on Advance Records Dj -Lonely lover \ blank I think its a Emi disc? It's not an emidisc, it's a one sided boot, is this the one they pressed at the wrong speed - it's actually Marvin Gaye.
Pete S Posted April 17, 2009 Author Posted April 17, 2009 how do you know that Pete? i got that off some guy at Knutsford Services in Oct75 for 50p if the note on the bag is anything to go by... Cos I'm f*cking clever that's how no, because I have always tried to find out when and where records were played, became popular etc. THose two were big records at the Torch and the Cats.
Gigs Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 It's not an emidisc, it's a one sided boot, is this the one they pressed at the wrong speed - it's actually Marvin Gaye. Thanks for that pete,it would explain a lot, I think its shite anyway

Pete S Posted April 17, 2009 Author Posted April 17, 2009 I know you are clever pete..that's why i asked!!! But also I knew Sam & Kitty was booted in 1973 or thereabouts which means logically, the emidisc would have been made before then :-)
Davetay Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 I'm pretty sure that it was from somewhere in Nottingham, that I had an EMI disc LP made for about a fiver for 12 tracks, selected from a list of the days top tunes. Wish I knew what happened to it . Tony Me and Phil used to get emi lps off Pete Lawson to sell at the Legion Spring/Summer 74. The 1st emi i got was "Blowing my mind to pieces" b/w "Case of love" Jan 73.
Jim G Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 Sons of Moses "Soul Symphony" / Joan Moody "We Must Be Doing Something Right" bought at Leeds Central 1973 not saying it is oldest, but is old!
Ian Dewhirst Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 But also I knew Sam & Kitty was booted in 1973 or thereabouts which means logically, the emidisc would have been made before then :-) For sure. I used to order 'em from Mopsy in Sheffield. I'd see him at the Mecca, tell him what tracks I wanted on each side and hey presto, they'd appear next week. That was probably circa '72 'cos the first one he did for me was Duke Browner "Crying Over You" inst and the Kaddo Strings "Nothing But Love" inst. I think he'd been at it for a few years 'cos he had the operation down to a tee....... A couple of years later, my old deejaying partner Twink bought an Emidisc machine and he'd knock 'em out in his garage as well........ So definitely Torch era and they most likely started in the Wheel era...... Ian D

Gaz
Pete S Posted April 18, 2009 Author Posted April 18, 2009 Ive got an old Emi-Disc with Side A - Jimmy Raye - Philly dog around the world B - Side is - Inspirations - No one else can take your place (the original proper vocal version..crystal clear sound quality) Not the oldest but is this the rarest track on an old Emi?? Gaz Have to say no because all the Emi's of that were the original version - I sold one not long back. I did have a rare one, Mirwood Strings - Don't Pretend instrumental, but not the one that came out on a bootleg - this was the one without the lead violins which was the first version played, it's still never been released.
Pete S Posted April 18, 2009 Author Posted April 18, 2009 The first one I ever paid for was Lou Pride b/w Reggie Garner. If you ever see an old emidisc oif Lou Pride it's worth picking up because the reissue and all subsequent reissues were 10 seconds shorter than the original, so those Emi's are the only things with the long version on at a cheap price.
Julianb Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 I used to make them to order. Ian Bottomley ( Twink who DJ'd at the Central with Ian Dewhirst)) used to get the orders from Wigan Casino and then we would cut them from the 45s that I had - think we charged a fiver each. Anyone on here buy one from us at Wigan ( I never went to Wigan, but still had the tunes! ) We used to sell the OOTP stuff that I bought wholesale from Chris Burton as well. Anyone ADMIT to buying any of those Julian

Eddie Hubbard Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 The thing is with these acetates , most of the top DJ's in the 70's traded them with each other , and nobody seemed to mind, it just meant you got to hear records that you wouldn't otherwise hear if you only went to Wigan [ me ] and didn't get to hear Sam or Ginger's big Cleethorpes sides , and vice versa .This practise kept Stafford fresh for years with new sounds , the DJ's would make a certain sound big , then do a dub , sell the original and buy a fresh potential biggie .My first acetates were The Drifters " Gotta pay " / Dena Barnes and Edward Hamilton " Baby don't " / Tobi Legend off Steve Glover in B'ham market .Used to buy some off a guy in Wigan record bar including Little Anthony /Lou Pride about £6 I think .Didn't they smell great as well ? !!! Best,Eddie

Best,Eddie They still do Eddie! Remember at Wigan when we used to hear (mainly) Alan Rhodes play things like The Bellboys, Chris Cerf, Fabulettes, Ellingtons, Camp, Baja Marimba Band, Lorraine Silver, Interplay - we'd heard of these records and knew these records were coming but Wigan hadn't got them yet, St Ives and Cleethorpes had them first, and it probably worked in the opposite direction too. I remembermy friend Paddy coming back from St Ives raving about Interplay and the next week asking Richard for it and Richard hadn't even heard it, 4 weeks later became one of his biggest records. Having said that - I couldn't have faced going to St Ives, Cleethorpes or yate, I just couldn't have missed a week at Wigan!
kevinsoulman Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 (edited) here are the two i have ive owned them approx 35 years.don't know if anyone recognises the handwriting on the first one. kev Edited April 18, 2009 by kevinsoulman
Dean Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 bought one in 1975, but I think it was quite old then, off an a local (Mansfield) DJ Eric Hetherington (not too sure of spelling) The Tempose (Lil Lavair and the Fabulaous Jades, I think) - I'll Be So Happy Lesley Gore - Just Can't Get Enough of You Tony P - I've got a emi 12 track lp somewhere, left at my house ages ago by Fran Morgan (Booby) from Newark, Notts. Can't recall tracks, poor quality sure it's got Rain on it from the time that was big.
Pete Morgan Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 I got from an old collector in N Wales in the 70s Homer Banks - Hooked on love and 60 mins of your love on the flip best Pete m
Anoraks Corner Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 Anyone know the years in which EMI started using the various white-label designs for their acetates?

That was Frank Elson..........he was on a sort of crusade against EMI,s.I was interviewed by him at Kettering one time and this was a topic of conversation although that part of the interview never got to print. Ian Dewhurst may have something to add it was in his hey day and his memory is perhaps better than mine. Not saying Ian or John Vincent played EMI,s it was just all the shit was going on when they were regular visitors to any of Ken Cox,s venues in Lincolnshire.
Jerry Hipkiss Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 My first was Rita Dacosta/Stagemasters from Pep in 1973, still got it, and for authenticity (!!) it came complete with the Catacombs office stamp on the labels!

I also think Pete Got a mention. I've mentioned it before, but Pete used to get his emis done at a recording studio in Carnforth(I think it was called Deroy). Some of the top DJs used the same place, and the owner used to tape all the stuff the DJs had and offer Pete copies at cost. The first emi I had, I bought in 73 and was Butch Baker Workin' At The Go Go/Promatics Sugar Pie Honey. I picked my second one up at a car boot sale in a Village just outside Portsmouth about 10 years ago, and it was The GTOs I love My Baby/Bits & Peices Keep On Runnig Away Paul
