Both. Also travel mostly.

If you want to experience something a bit different from the norm, you often need to be prepared to travel (wherever you are).

On the other hand, sometimes its nice to relax with people you know locally, and have more of a social night.

I wouldn't support an established DJ or night locally just because its local, though I will always give something new a try.

Of course, it also depends on other factors like budget, driving, etc.

Oh, and as to the thread title, in most cases its not about the DJ for me. I'm too new to the scene to know who plays what generally.

It's about what I experience at the event, which comes down to factors like type of music, variety of music, 'atmosphere' etc.;

Obviously the DJs contribute to that, but I don't give a sh-- about 'big names'.

Both. I think a good local DJ and a big name can offer something interesting -sometimes the local DJ even more so if you're comparing the to an oldies DJ.

Love to travel, it gives you a bigger buzz to the night.you get to hear a wider range of music each week.the big dj,s arn,t always the best some warm up spots are great.local nights can be a bit like groundhog day if you go month in month out.But they keep the scene ticking over.

I agree...I don't travel for DJs or even for big ticket records...I travel for the social aspect...if the night on offer has a good reputation for being friendly and welcoming then that seals the deal for me.

It's not really about nattering (well, it is for Beeks  ); it's about going where you feel good, and although the music is a huge part of that, so is feeling relaxed, among friends (or at least people you can hang out with), 'where everybody knows your name' (cue 'Cheers' theme).

I certainly hope so, though given my recent inability to catch flights due to being rubbish, you never know. If you are at BB on Friday, I may see you there if I am doing my regular Brighouse/Boutique double decker. Haven't decided yet.

do a lot of local venues and love them ,its the comfort zone thing.

lateley tho done a bit of travelling with differing results

but my faith with the scene as been somewhat restored due to a resurgence of the oldies and a lessening of the disco/modern genre at the venues attended

as for big name dj,s ..with certain big names would close the window if they were playin ont front lawn

Wouldn't it be a lot cheaper to stay in and listen to refo-soul and the Internet's many heavy metal channels then?

Close the window? Personally, I'd set the dogs on them.

Although I suspect I have a different musical preference to you, I agree with the relaxed pleasure of local gigs and the comfort zone thing -  although it can work against those venues trying something new, or different.

what if staying local ain't worth the support?........we support some local venues...stewartby,groovesville and silks because all the promoters are genuine, wether they like what l like or not. They run their venues and are also to be seen at other peoples venues around the country....proper soul fans in my book....our love though are the best the north has to offer.....both the music and the ethos are much better smile.gif

obviously only go back to local venues worth supporting the crap ones fall by the wayside

fortunately we have a choice of decent local venues almost every w/end and sometimes its a difficult decision to miss these to go further afield.

we travel to these events to check them out and will re visit if ok usually the names of the dj,s is an irrelevance in deciding to revisit

ITS THE MUSIC WHAT COUNTS

I think it is more interesting what/who people consider as big name DJ's, what sort of stuff do they play??

To me big names are Butch, Andy D, Mick H, Ady C, Kitch etc etc (okay small names when you type them out but big sounds :) ) , I suspect they are not the same as many people on here mean. To me they are or should be big names as they play records other people cant or wouldn't, and not records that have just been recycled or rare, which is what it is surely all about, and when you think about it surely there is no other choice if you are into the music, Am I really getting it so wrong.................

dont you think its some times like the emperor's new clothes with rare soul,I some time hear toon's that some ones banging on about and just dont get it, then you hear one track that blows you away! it never seemed to be like that years ago I liked it all ,is it me ?

Local for me, i can't get to any place outside of Peterborough. Unless i hitch hicked so i go to local venues and enjoy the DJ's but i have been able to hear people like Soul Sam and other DJ's from far afield when they vist here. John Manship too. They all do a good job

I really dont know what you mean by rare soul, its a term that confuses me on here . People seem to be able to tell if a record is rare just by its sound, bizarre,

If you are saying you dont like the stuff the people I have listed are playing then I suspect we are on different scenes, no big deal, we just probably view things in a different way, live and let live and all that....... (even though my opinion is always right :) )

I believe a large percentage of people end up falling into personal comfort zones, like soggy sponges they seem able to absorb a certain amount until they are happy with their lot and want to keep it that way.

Nowt wrong with that of course, until they start to critisize those who are still hungry for more unknowns.

Nobody expects everybody to like everything, do what you do and enjoy it, those of us that want something different will do the same regardless, emperors new clothes or not.

No I didn't mean one Dj ,I ment in general ,and at the end of the day its all down to personal taste ,Your right about rare soul ,that to me would be the one off's ,hard to find ,not so much expensive ,but anything good always seems to cost more ?over the years Iv been around a bit listened to lots of stuff some i love some dont do anything to me so i dont know if i am on a different scene to you ? But to be honest just of late found it hard to find any where that blows me away,

I hope you dont think im critisizing cos im not in anyway, I love to listen to new stuff ,Like iv said on here before im not mad keen on the R&B ,some of its ok just dont hit the spot for me ,I much prefer the more modern stuff ,And I know how hard that scene has struggled over the years, Its just Iv heard records played for a while by bottom of the ladder dj's being picked up by bigger dj's and going massive ,It seems to me that they seem to have the power to make or break records. At the end off the day they are only playing what they like or know the punters will like,

I don't care how far a dj has travelled or if he or she is local as long as they use some imagination and offer something else that all the others aren't already playing. Usually I prefer to travel but if the music policy is what suits me near home then so much the better.

I thought everyone was a dj these days it seems like it with the number of dj,s about

blimey every venue as at least 5 on and there are loads of venues every Fri / Sat country wide

To me a good DJ is one who could do 3 hrs at a nite with 2 spots keep the dancefloor busy and keep the

collecters non dancers ect happy with a selection off semi known / unknown ? and well known good records

I still cant get my head around it even after all these years when some venues put on around 5 / 6 DJ,s when

they all have the same 45,s more or less what the payin soulies want to hear on the dancefloor ect unsure.gif

Travel everytime...the further away from Essex the better.

Trouble is its all mates 'dj'ing' for mates n it ends up same do different venue with little or no exception at local soul nites. Thats not peculiar to this area, from what I see its the same everywhere.

I prefer the niter scene to soul nites so would only go to a soul nite to support friends, then on to a niter if possible.

Plus I love the journey there and the whole travelling experience, the services, excited on the way there, knackered on the way home, to me its the whole niter package. You cant beat it.

Good comment.

We tend to travel more these days, although travel dose'nt always equal quality  .

One of the Things we and a few other like minded lovers of great soulful music have noticed that most local venues do have a majority of "resident D.J's" with only one or two (if you're lucky) guests. So to hear different tastes or "genre,s" you have to travel, on the odd occassion a certain dj will strike the right chord.
