Guest Awake 502 Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 (edited) Is it me or does something not look quite right about this Ebay Edited May 31, 2005 by Awake 502
Jason S Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 Is it me or does something not look quite right about this Ebay link Dodgy...very dodgy...looks (and sounds by the description) like the kind of 'acetate' that vinylcarvers in the UK produce....thick, flat vinyl with those small (smaller than US) labels. USA haul, my eye. Could be wrong but it doesn't look right.

Guest Trevski Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 Looks like VC's to me too. Anyone ever seen a vinyl 'acetate' from the states? Studio discs sure, but not one like this. Would the VC's type of disc been available in 70's/80's? I think not.
MarkWhiteley Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 Saw it when it first came on. Laughed it off at first but it seems a few folks have fallen for it. Best thing might be to mail the guys at vcs and ask if they remember pressing them. Doubt they will though what with all hte orders from Smiffyland

Jesus f***, that Ujima's an especially nasty one, though! Interesting he's done his homework on the Sean Oliver, what with the CKUA relating to a Canadian Radio station out of Calgary and the Boomtang label being from Toronto. Appears he's not that clueless (even though by his actions that's what he's assuming everyone else is)...must be just a tw*t, then

Simon T Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 If you were going to do a "test press", just to check, wouldn't it be a good idea to do one of "a shoulder to lean on", you know the record you're intending to 'push' and press up several hundred double-sided white demos for distribution to radio stations etc in a few hour time?

Well done chaps link Hi, I am the "lucky winner" of the Ujima record. First of all, thanks for your messages! I already paid for this item and received it, but having done so via paypal, i still have options. I have been aware of recentyl made acetates being sold as such, but selling some of those as originals... I will keep you guys up to date through this forum, especially the sellers' reply to my mail to him should be interesting... Cheers, Stefan
Guest Trevski Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 (edited) Just received this: hi there, many thanks for your message. pete Smith also informed me plus a german friend of mine. I typed to the seller, but I don't think he will have good reasons to convince me I wasn't ripped off by him. I paid via paypal and as far as I know I still can cancel this payment, although I won't get back the complete sum. I will wait for the sellers' reply, but I'll cancel the payment anyway, it looks very obvious now... Cheers, Stefan Looks like we have a result! Soulsource-1 ripoff-0 Edited May 31, 2005 by Trevski

He does turn over some nice modern stuff.LP's mainly. The Ujima OUCH,he did well there.but the Sean Oliver puzzles me,ok the 12" goes for a few quid, but you can get the CD with it on and also Magic which is infinitely better than You and Me. I will watch this space Pete
Pete S Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 Reply from Vinyl Carvers hi Pete, just had a look at it - this sounds a bit dodgy indeed! we don't know if we cut it, just checked his ebay id - never heard from this guy judging from the label it does look like one of ours our labels are smaller than normal sized ones we had them made for us but also supplied them our friend who built our lathe - so he is selling them to other people there are already a few other machines in europe, also in the uk and two of the uk people already threw in the towel before they've managed to produce a single good record our technology is quite new, the oldest records are about 5 years old now before that it was only acetates, no vinyl he said he bought it from the states there's no machine in the states yet, we know that for sure we did a few cuts for customers from the states, even for radio stations but definitely no soul music he only got 50 quid for it - hopefully the person who bought it will identify it as 'too new' we're not into soul and don't know the tunes by name but we'll keep an eye on his future auctions as he bought a 'huge haul of testpressings'
Guest in town Mikey Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 4 -- FAMILY OF EVE -- PLEASE BE TRUTHFUL -- MASSIVE KEB DARGE TUNE FROM THE STAFFORD DAYS ..BRILLIANT !!!!!!!! link I had someone try to tell me this at the 100 club one night. Not on this site so I wont name him. He spent most of the evening trying to convince me that Keb was playing 'deep funk', at Stafford. If I had more confidence in my terrible memory I might have said 'I think if I had asked Keb to play any funk at Stafford, I'd have got a mouthful of abuse and the only words I would have understood would have been Off, Wee and Bastard'.
Steve G Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 Good work lads. These rip off merchants need castrating without anaesthetic. Awake 502 is dead right - Arthur hit this one well before Stafford, I think he may well have found it when he went to the USA with Sam in 1980ish - and Arthur covered the group for us in an old Blackbeat as I recall. - Sorry to be the harbinger of such bad news darlings, but Keb only played it much later
P5OULH Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 (edited) Dodgy or what! definately a scam, has anyone mailed him? link I mailed him about them he mailed me back saying he wasn,t sure about them and is withdrawing them there is a story in itself !!!!!!!!!!!! Edited June 1, 2005 by P5OULH

Awake 502 probably got his copy where I got mine - Dave Raistrick- and it was still covered then (1983 ?) Played at Cleethorpes niters and gathered a few plays at Clifton Hall (although with little success) Dave R was finding quite a few good seventies things at that time, Timeless Legend 24 Karat Gold (Donna Washington cover up) etc It never came out in Jamaica though Steve
Guest stromberg Posted June 2, 2005 Posted June 2, 2005 Good to have you aboard! Yes, will need the money back for full time result, hope it doesn't go to penalties Keep us posted on the situation link Hi folks, it looks like everything will turn out fine. The seller agreed to take back the record and refund it. It has to be said that my impression on all this is that this has NOT been an attempt to rip people off, the seller acted in good faith!! I had my doubts about the authenticity of this record, but only after I read your comments it would look a bit dodgy and so on... So, the deal will be cancelled and there are no real winners in this deal. That is all I have to say on this topic, the most important words, of course, are: thanks to everyone being helpful! I really appreciate it Cheers, Stefan
