Its all down to mix them together nice and suitable...which should be another aspect no DJ should overlook...maybe..?...indeed.

Loads...only need to take a look at all those tunes that used to be 5 to 25 UKP a few years ago and are now indemand and more expensive..just from the top of my head 45s like Ethics/Vent, that thing on Fairmount/Hemisphere Ian Wright was looking for recently (can you believe it I cant even remember its title RIGHT NOW LOL), Lee Fields...and loads others

Sure, especially as every (e-v-e-r-y) newly discovered or re-activated (and once overlooked) 45 causes so and so many people to let the rest of the scene know that they think the tune in question is poor shite and has nth to do at all with Northern Soul...last example for this I can remember was the Mustangs Of Austin situation...this 45 got dumped on here before it even had a real chance on UK floors. Well, for me it worked well here in Germany anyway LOL!

Marc

here are some that i got cheap via soul packs etc years ago 3 copies of constallations -i didnt know how to on gemuni star £1 eachl

what shall i do -frankie and the classicals on british philips 50p/ stanky get funky-billy davis on cobblestone 2 copies £1 each /plus my heart needs abreak / ,psycadelic soul,/ to the bitter end / all given to me free by ricky warburton and many more .this is why i cant get my 0head round the rediculous prices thesedays .i quite often gave them away at venues(all on original vinyl)

Not sure whether this has been mentioned so far, but (and though I'm no legal expert on performing rights matters) I believe it may well be illegal to play bootlegs at a commercial venue.

I'm pretty sure it will be against the terms of any public entertainment licence an establishment may have (just as it would be for, say, bootleg DVDs to be screened to a paying audience).

If this is correct (and I think it is), and regardless of where you stand in this particular debate, you are not legally allowed to play bootlegs at a northern soul event - and that's even before the soul police arrive!

In theory that should be an end to it.

The only question of principle which would remain is whether you would wish to play legitimate re-issues, such as the Columbia pressed (small 45) Okehs or UK Grapevines for example.

Peter

Peter your absolutely right- but Im not sure the music industry is interested in 40 odd year old tunes- I wish they would because the promoters would then be fined thousands and that would be one way of getting rid of these nights that play boots.

Actually the recent adverts using things like Come on train is useful in this area as(playing the boot) it infringes the licence obtained by the advert company to use the music and they could sue the promoters who play the boot.

The grapevine ones from the 70s are a different Kettle of fish as they were lincenced by RCA.

You're probably right Peter, but if they can't stop boots being sold in HMV, Oxford St or on E-Bay, then I doubt if they'll marshall the forces to raid a Northern Soul night up North mate...........

What a load of old bollocks. Now you're going to have an "expert" on the door checking to see if your records are allowed to be played. legitimate records will be issued with passports.

Meanwhile all the punters go somewhere where they can hear the records they want to hear.

Totally agree. One that comes immediately to mind is Joe Simon and 'When'.

Maybe someone should build a bootleg detector and put them at every entrance to a soul night then if it goes off the offender can be thrown into the fires of hell.

At the last count 7323 viewed this topic. Christ almighty hav'nt you got anything better to do? Just go to a gig, have a good time, listen or dance to some great tunes, meet your friends, have a laugh.

Paying through the nose for a record; does the artist or musicians get a percentage? NO.

The music is supposed to bring you together.

Have a listen to "Stand By Me" on this site; the two very old chaps singing; thats what l call real soul music. I wish I was there watching.

Thats exactly it Pete , I remember when each Allnighter or Soul night had its own Identity , eg Allbrighton was the place to go if you wanted to hear something different if you wanted oldies then you went elsewhere.

Going back to my original point , there are people out there with these records who will DJ for petrol money so there is no need to play pressings at all , work your night around your DJs so to speak so not to lose credibility for financial gain.

I can remember not too long ago when K Burrel played the F Wilson , I am not a big fan of the record but it was a bit special to hear it played on the rare original , as with Soul Inc , Mello Souls etc , if you want to hear them you should have travel to venues where the DJs that own them are playing ! anything else just aint the same .

I will second that,You forgot, Constellations, Velvet Hammer etc... especially when he showed me a Joe Jama, but wouldnt let me touch it.

WHY OH WHY get a £30 or £40 pound tune on a F*****G boot or carver. Boots etc are CHEATING, but having a lower priced tune carved is just Sodding Rude.

Kev (still not doing modern though) Such

OVO as when you get the tune home and play the flip side you bought it for there is occasionally a belter on the other side. "Father Knows Best" The Radiants, an absolute beauty on the other side, wouldnt get that with a boot or carver.

Also the ability to swell with pride when you put the tune on someone comes up and says "Where the f*** did you get that you arse, i've been after that for yonks and cant find one". Or "I've never seen it on that label before"

For the crdeibility and to show other DJs, Promoters that you respect their collections and will not disrespect them by playing one of the tunes that they hold dear, NO MATTER HOW MUCH IT COST, on a fricking £5 or so boot or carver.

Apologies if this has been done before but....what are the views on playing EMI discs?.

Bearing in mind these were took off the original, and usually, rare records at the time.Given to the top dj's to play, sometimes to give the record a push before the boot came out.

Is there any difference then, between EMI discs and carvers?

Whats the pecking order?

Original/EMI/Carver/Re-issue/boot??.

C'mon, plenty of mileage left in this thread.

If it was taken off the original then it cannot IMVHO be regarded as OVO. It has been released, unlike some of the Kent releases that were not previously issued.

Rude isn't the word I would use.

The majority of people who play boots at least play records they have a chance of owning.

Here's a thought:

Why don't rare soul or OVO promoters simply drop the 'Northern Soul' tag altogether from their venues and tag it a 'Rare Soul' event, and leave the Northern Soul tag to the events that play the 'Top 500' tracks or these so called 'local' events where format isn't such an issue. Surely if you split them like that and advertise them as such, after a while people will learn what to expect and there won't be any confusion or the obvious upset that this issue causes some people?

Or is that total bollocks and even more confusing than things are already? :D

Someone might have already said this (I'm just reading through the thread) but to my mind that is exactly what is happening.

There seems to be two types of night these days:

- one is for people who want a few beers and listen to tunes they've heard a thousand times and still think are great - format not really an issue (no pun intended) to the promoters (nothing wrong with that)

- the other is for people who want to hear the really rare stuff that other people don't have (nothing wrong with that either).

What does one do when you actually want something in between these two things? When you're bothered about format but don't care if a tune is rare or not so long as it is good? You want well known mixed in with lesser known?

My answer: stay in, listen to your own records and keep collecting

It might become the biggest thread on here

but does original playing either UK or US issues. not being funny here but some people would only buy US originals and may well think a UK original is stupid. what about promo copies

for me if i have UK original, US original and either UK or US promo's that to me is ok to have played out and again if it includes say Kent records released with tunes on them not released before on vinyl again acceptable to me. a vinyl carver would be done for a track only on CD to play out who cares if people say it's wrong at least it's something different from the norm

i say this cause how many times do we have to hear Just a Little Misunderstanding - The Contours (oringinal likely) yet i got a carver of the Jackson 5 version which can be played out and is different to the same version played out at every venue

[COULD'NT GIVE A SAM FAIRY f*** WETHER ITS A BOOT,ORIGINAL,PRESSING EMI DISC WETHER IT'S MODERN OR A OLDIE. AS LONG AS IT FILLS THE FLOOR AND KEEPS THE PUNTERS HAPPY AT ANY GIVEN VENUE, AS A SOULFUL MELODY OR BEAT, THEN THAT WILL DO ME.IF YOU DON'T LIKE A PARTICULAR VENUE, DON'T GO. WE ALL KNOW YOU CAN ATTEND SOUL NIGHTS AT A PARTICULAR VENUE AND IT CAN GET BORING WHEN THE SAME SOUNDS GET HAMMERED, THATS WHEN THE PUNTERS STOP ATTENDING IN BIGGER NUMBERS.IN MY EYES A LOT OF THE BIGGER CLUBS HAVE BEEN GUILTY OF THIS FROM WIGAN TO STOKE'S KINGS HALL.IF YOU'RE JOCKING AT A NIGHTER,TRY FIND OUT WHAT THE f*** AS BEEN PLAYED EARLIER IN THE NIGHT AND DO A DIFFERENT SET TO THOSE BEFORE YOU. [ THERE'S FUCKIN THOUSANDS TO CHOOSE FROM ]. WETHER OLD OR NEW AS LONG AS IT'S GOOD FOR THE PUNTERS AND THE VENUE. IT SEEMS LIKE SOME OF THE JOCKS LIKE TURNING UP WITH A EXPENSIVE, BUT SMALL VARATION OF SOUNDS FROM THE OTHER DJ's WHO ARE PLAYING AT THE THE SAME GIG AND ARE THEN LIMITED AS WHAT THEY CAN PLAY. THE DJ's CAN AND DO PAY BIG MONEY FOR RARE RECORDS BUT IT IS UP TO THEM TO DICOVER THE NEW SOUNDS AND PLAY THE LESSER PLAYED CLASSIC OLDIES. BARGIN DISCOVERIES HAVE AND STLL MUST BE ABLE TO BE FOUND,THREE MOTOWN TRACKS ON MUSIC FOR PLEASURE LP's MARTHA REEVES, R DEAN TAYLOR & THE SUPREMES. I THINK THE OLDIES [ we know that lots get over played ]ARE A INTEGRAL PART OF THE SCENE FOR ATTRACTING YOUNGSTERS TO EMBRACE THE MUSIC WE ALL LOVE. WHERE DID I FIRST LISTEN TO ALL THE TORCH,WHEEL, & CATACOMBS CLASSICS FIRST [ Mr M' & some on the main floor ] ! YEP WIGAN CASINO. IT'S VINYL FOR ME , BUT MOST OF ALL QUALITY AND VARATION FOR THE PAYING PUNTER.

Stockport?!? Is there still a cinema in Mersey Sqare? When I were nowt burralad in short pants I saw the Wilde Five Skiffle Group there, two of them went on to become part of the Hollies, and the Hollies went on to be the only British Invasion group who could do cover versions that stood up against the originals.

Ah memories, if I'd been a bit older and born on the other side of the other end of The Mersey and we hadn't moved away, I could've been one of The Beatles.
