But some of them weren't rare and l remember these been played

at The Casino just before they hit the charts;

Queen of Clubs-KC and The Sunshine Band

I'm on Fire-5000 Volts

Candi Staton - Young Hearts Run Free

In 78 there was a time when M's use to open early before the Casino (8-10 I think). We use to go in for a shift pint of Burtonwood's (bloody awful stuff) and get warmed up for the main event. My mate Alec swears that Leo Sayer - Thunder in my heart was once played, now I cannot verify this as I was outside in search of some hurry up. Anybody else remember it?

I swear I never heard that there, even before it was released here

Pete, Richard was playing it in 76, but i don't know about at the Casino, cause i was not going there myself at the time.

no not me Matt, I know it was played at Blackpool but I didn't hear it at Wigan

The thing is, records like Queen Of Clubs shouldn't be derided just because they got in the charts; Blackpool was playing 70% new releases so Wigan also played new imports; two of the very biggest records 76 were Don't take away the music and Heaven must be missing an angel by Tavares - I remember hearing Car Wash played there on import too, and Center City, Do what you wanna do (T Connection) - they all charted eventually

I once heard a rumour that some soul records occasionally got played at Wigan, but frankly I find that a bit 'unbelievable'... laugh.gif

(Before Pete lambasts me I should point out that this is a half-baked, late night attempt at humor, accelerated by 4 pints of Hog's Back 'Hop'...)

Esther Philips "What A Difference A Day Makes" was a big record at Sams as well, along with the Tavares DTATM, played off the album before the 45 release.

Both great records and obviously played elsewhere at the same time.

I heard "I love music" at the casino, a fine record in my opinion. also remember hearing keep on running (spencer davis group) in M's .

This was played a few years later athe Top of the World along with Harold Melvin the love I lost and they sounded brilliant.

Steve Arrington and Booker Newbury were also played ahead of release , If I remember right a version of 'going back to my roots' was getting played at that time too , not a clue who it was by though.

Wasn't that a cover up of Eddie...and some other group??

Are you thinking of Eddy Jacobs Exchange "Cant Seem To Get You Out Of My Mind" on Columbia, which was covered as Ronnie McNeir "Back In The Streets Again" depite being a UK released Four Tops b side ? Thats a different record to the one Ezzie mentioned.

Rob that would be 1978, when Richard was championing it, soon after it was released as a UK 45 release and shot to number one in the uk pop charts and was still being played by Mr Winstanley. Along side Isaac Hayes - Disco Connection.

Yes - 1976 Isaac Hayes Movement was released on Uk (ABC 4100) and charted. Was later played/reused during 1978 by Winstanley.

No it was by Lamont Dozier,It was also used at the time as a jingle on a TV advert for a packet of crisps called Kp Disco's,

TRUE not a myth I remember it well,it was later covered by Odyssey,

The Idris Muhammed track was called "Could Heaven Ever Be Like This.

Curtis Mayfield - Move on up?

This track is now a part of The Casino legend,

Apparently Dave Evison was doing a spot in the main hall and had forgotten to cue up is next track,as the last few bars of whatever he was playing started to fade out he just reached into his box and pulled out the first thing he got his hands on"Move On Up" was the said track It went down a storm I'm led to believe,This one thing was to lead to the opening of Mr M's as an oldies room in the following weeks.

I wrote about Phyliss Hyman on a facebook Northern page a while ago,I heard it at at Heywood civic hall, and all of my mates looked at me and I looked at them,Yep it's a disco record about 80ish I think,

Yes Iam an old bloke who came back to the scene!!,

The Trammps when you think about it?

It was released in 74 ish,and it does have a good beat,The instrumental is called "Scrub Board",and it features on many Northern collection cd's,

Sexy Sugar Plum,Ah well ummm,

I bought it and tried to dance to it at the Ritz,

I was 16-17 should I have known better???,

If it was a newie today would they dance to it??

If you were a newbie on the scene would you dance to it??

It's all up to you folks,

After all this is a discussion,

No point in saying it should not have / or be played,It was and still is,

"You sexy sugar plum look what you've gone and done"

Cheers

just going off topic for a mo, i always remember going to one of kojacks do's down in portsmouth in 1977 and he played hot chocolates first no 1 so you win again, because he said if anyone deserved a no 1 they did,one of the few groups to have a top ten hit every year that decade i believe.
