not sure if this has been done before,but asking what was your favourite old record shop from the past and why,im not talking about u.s shops where you found your best haul im talking about that really special u.k shop that has a place in your heart, maybee it was those gorgeous imports sellotaped to the window that did it for you or maybee the shop stocked every jay boy release when you were 15 and that helped you get into the music or was it the atmosphere or the characters hangin' around... im gonna leave mine till later as im interested to see if anyone else mentions it but my prize for the best shop name/sign is peps downtown records,handpainted with the city skyline rather like the soultown or black magic labels,right in the middle of walsall too! mid/late 70s

what was your favourite old record shop from the past and why,

Well for me it has to be Hearsay Records in Hemel, long time gone bought my first northern record there JJ Barnes Real Humdinger, & it was good to by Carstairs as a new release in 1973 for 1 pound 25p & many many more....Mainly for us it was our contact with the scene & the people in the shop new their music, Nigel who was more into his Jazz-Funk then but nowday's appearing @ many a Northern Do

wow chrissieo i remember migrant mouse!,i remember me and my mate going there and buying papa was a rolling stone the temptations on gordy it arrived as we were in the shop ah the excitement,if you know chester there was also a great little shop down by the station [in a row of about 4 little shops]that sold old soul,they had some great stuff at times and really great albums..wow cant believe anyone else remembers migrant mouse as chester wasnt exactly soultown was it!

Got to be Selecta Disc on Arkwright St Nottm for me. The musty smell of old reords as you went down stairs to be greeted by Mr Alan Day and a six foot poster on the back door of a beautiful naked lady backed with psychodelic circles. 1000's of tunes no one wanted because they wanted the pressings.

Also R.E .CORDS in Derby run by an old freind Hector one of the freindliest guys on the scene

Down stairs to R.E.Cords, upstairs to Sid Booths in Mansfield with phil kingswood and kev roberts bringing in stuff from his US trips to sell (hair down his back to his bum and calling everyone motherf**kers) but the daddy's must have been Sounds Good on Alfreton Road Nottingham or Violet Mays in Sheffield, happy times but God knows what we left !!

Chester wan't soul city but I lived in Rhyl and was in college in chester from 74-76

Got my first QOF from there I seem to remember, and so many others. Every time I go to chester That little bit of the "cross" doesn't seem the same without Migrant Mouse. Mind you, you could only get about 3 people in there at one time. Don't think I used the other shop you are talking about but seem to vagualy remember it.

Bostocks records in Bradford was one of the best for me circa 1977....20 imports for a quid! they had thousands and thousands of imports 7" and albums, most of my motown LP collection came from that shop!

Another great shop especially for second hand 45s was Discount Discs in Keighley, lots of mobile DJs used to sell their unwanted vinyl which went into these huge racks for me to wade through. I spent many a wage packet in that shop, great times indeed!

Bews in Burslem, A great old music shop, they sold records in the upstairs room. Sometimes it was so full of soulies on a Saturday, you had to queue to get in. As much of a meeting place than a record shop.

Being a Sheffield fellow my heart is always at Violet Mays, used to ask for the Northern from behind the counter, then me and the old guy would listen to around the 47 records i always asked him to play.....great memories..........great memories.....

Travelled all over the country junk-shopping in the early seventies found loads of stuff as well.Happy days

Also "Flipside" and "Sound of music" in Rotherham and of course not forgetting "Mary Boylans" in Conisbro'

steve you wouldnt have seen steve glover in that shop ten paces at dawn grahams shop was ground level and steve glover had soul galore in the basement with the sister shop at oasis manchester,soul galore was great for the northern and graham was spot on with the new imports,i have some great photos in soul galore must try and find them and post them up.

Talking of Rotherham, there was also Derek S/Steve C's shop on Wellgate. I well remember buying Frank Beverly & Butlers from there, getting it home and finding a frankford/wayne stamp on it.

Boylans (Boylands?) in Conisborough was also a soul meeting place Sat afternoons. Racks of records in amongst the Hoovers and kettles.

It was mentioned on here last year some time that Mary Boyland kept a copy of everything she had through the shop. Or is that another of those northern soul myths.

Where are they????
