According to this little FAQ... https://www.tomh.demon.co.uk/jukebox/faq.htm#8 .... American record playing equipment used to select the correct speed to play the record at based on the hole size. (It's under the FAQ question 'So what's this dinking business then?')

cheers for that explanation, but the next question if thats the case is did you have to use the small adaptors on your house record player/hi fi and what about the old multi player set up ???

According to the book "45 rprm" , the reason the 45s had the larger center holes was because the engineers at RCA decided to come up with a new player for the 45s. The big feature was that you could stack 5 or 6 45s on top of each other for continuous music. They felt the larger center hole would distribute the stress and friction better and avoid the damage that happened to the small holes and labels of 78s.

Been meaning to ask this related question: why do some South American 7 inch singles play at 33rpm. Argentina springs to mind. If I was to hazard a guess I'd plump for the availability of cheap record players that only play at one speed.

Doesn't really sound right though - anybody got a better answer?

Godz

I was told that it was due to American Jukeboxes that played 33rpm only being dumped on the South American market when they became obsolete...

Why press 33.3rpm and 45rpm of the same tune, when you can press everything at 33.3?

Seems feasible.

Wasn't a mile out if that's the case then. Have you noticed that they often keep the US or European cat numbers so some of them start with 45... :P

Seen old U.S. multi changers with a big fat center spindle, no adaptors needed.

Do the records spin the opposite way south of the equator?

Never thought of that

Be interesting to know whether the motors burn out quicker down there as a result of the opposing gravitational pull though !!

I remember Plumby having a shed load of cheap US 45s at Soul Essence some years ago and most if not all had metal/ali inserts pressed into the large hole.

I believe they came direct from the USA so the US must of had 2 types of juke box is my guess, otherwise why put middles in that were put in after they were manufacturered?

Plumby can defo say where they come from but my memory recalls them being ex juke box stock. I was pushing the different ones out and telling everybody I collect them........I do.

I'm sure there was a cost savings associated with the large hole. Not only that but then they could market the adapters.

I always heard that a big part of it related to the original format war -- they were trying to push one formate over the other, the big hole made the 45 players "incompatible" with the 33s.
