Guest Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 Reckon the best was Johnny Caswell- Cigarette Ashes and worst Tamiko Jones-Spellbound ( Think Montclairs were on Contempo but not on raries (coz they'd have won!!!)
pikeys dog Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 Best - toss up between the Deon Jackson (alt version of I Can't Go On) and Robert Parker (I Caught You In A Lie). Worst - John Fred and the Playboys?
MikeHinNewJersey Posted April 6, 2009 Posted April 6, 2009 (edited) Alright, mate,l don't remember the first two but think that Judy in Disguise on CR was by Offenbach........... sounds really soulful doesn't it??? Wasn't there an album with badges all over the front of it full of Northern on Contempo??? Edited April 6, 2009 by MikeHinNewJersey
Sean Hampsey Posted April 6, 2009 Posted April 6, 2009 Reckon the best was Johnny Caswell- Cigarette Ashes and worst Tamiko Jones-Spellbound Worth noting that Cigarette Ashes was not Johnny Caswell, but Jimmy Conwell and Spellbound was not on Contempo 'Raries' but the main Contempo label. Other than that, Bettye Swann "Make Me Yours" had its third UK issue on the Raries logo. Sean

Soul-slider Posted April 12, 2009 Posted April 12, 2009 B6 The Incredibles has it's first UK outing of 'Another Dirty Deal' on the flip.
paup-ine Posted April 12, 2009 Posted April 12, 2009 Sorry to ask, but is it not just Contempo Raries now? the Dance Dance Dance album is on just contempo? Or is it all the same thing? P
Soul Shrews Posted April 12, 2009 Posted April 12, 2009 Album is the regular black Contempo label Cheers Paul
Guest Leigh J Posted April 12, 2009 Posted April 12, 2009 Isnt Johnny My Boy on the flip of Boy from New York City ?
Guest Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 Best - toss up between the Deon Jackson (alt version of I Can't Go On) and Robert Parker (I Caught You In A Lie). Worst - John Fred and the Playboys? Bang on with these two, definetly the best two on this label. The Deon version is superior to the US Original. I think Robert Parker shades it though, a truly magnificent cut, with a very distinctive style and feel. The birth of reggae music via the 'choppy' guitar can be heard clearly in this glorious tune and it is no coincedence that it is a record adored by many Jamaicans in their 50s and 60s who first heard it on the radio, blasting from the US to the West Indies when it was a new release. It was of course later a big lovers rock smash covered by Louiza Marks and others.
arnie j Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 Isnt Johnny My Boy on the flip of Boy from New York City ? yes it is bud, what a tune johnny my boy is !
ZapatootheTiger Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 Best? Black Water Gold (Pearl) ~ African Music Machine (CS9002) Cool Jerk ~ Capitols (CS9030) Follow The Wind ~ Midnight Movers (CS9018) Worst? I never bought any "worst" on that label, though I did buy several less-than-satisfying on the Contempo label.
