Ady Croasdell Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Was that disco/house thing by Papa John Creach I'm The Fiddle Man or summat, I gave it big licks to that and Kid Creole the one about his address book. As skinheads everyone moonhopped to Free All Right Now and Norman Greenbaum Spirit In The Sky.

spirit Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 A lot of the early eighties acts mentioned above never made any secret of their huge love for soul, and the influence it had on them. They were often wrongly dismissed en masse as superficial, plastic, or similar. Some of my favourite music comes from that era. I think ABC in particular would describe themselves as a Motown band made up of 4 working-class lads from Sheffield - what a wonderful, soulful record "Lexicon of Love" is. My favourite of the lot though was Dexys.

Pete S Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 This may sound bizarre but have a listen to Who Do You Think You Are by Candelwick Green and it's a great Northern track, if it hadn't charted it could have been covered up. I listened to it by accident recently and was very surprised. And then I see it on John Manships website

spirit Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 How about... Bronski Beat - Smalltown Boy Sounds like an updating of one of those plaintive 'stigma' soul tracks.

Guest Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 (edited) A couple of them were Yate boys. Good friend of mine I've mentioned a few times on SS - Tony Gordon from this band, also put a couple of his pics up. He was a Mecca, Wigan & Yate regular. He's still collecting records and attends the local soul nights in my home town (Poole/Bournemouth). fabulous dancer - he dances like he means it Edited April 2, 2009 by mikecook
Guest peter burke Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 A couple of them were Yate boys. Hi, Karen here, through a fuzzy memory of Yate, I remember Neeta from Stroud, regailing tales of spending an odd hour or two in a squat [in London I think] with the 'Blue Boys' there were loads of them! at the time of them cutting the demo, all seemed SOOO glamourous at the time, ahhh memories. Karen xxxxxxx
