Godzilla Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Yes l remember it ....unfortunately........... Wasn't there two labels Pye then Pye lnternational who were distributors Think if they were American ( And started with a 1 ) they were good and British (And stated with a 2) they were rubbish....Am l right?? Well it may be considered cheesy but I think the arrangement on Wayne Gibson's version of Under My Thumb is fantastic. Mind you I wouldn't cross the road for a copy of Leon Young Strings...

De-to Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 Sure it was on Disco Demand, the best northern compilation ever in my opinion.......Disco Demands Solid Soul Sensations (Sanctuary Records) Following the release recently of "Reaching For The Best - The Northern Soul Of Blackpool Mecca, a compilation by legendary Northern Soul DJ Ian Levine, Sanctuary Records now delve into the vaults for a reissue of what is claimed to be the first Northern Soul LP (vinyl record for younger readers). Put together by Ian Levine and Pye Records A&R man Dav Mculeer in March 1975 for the specially formed Disco Demand label, Solid Soul Sensations sourced all it's selections from New York's Sceptor Records and it's subsidiary Wand, run by Florence Greenberg. The sixteen tracks on the original are now bolstered by a further ten tracks from the same source. So what is amongst the tracks on the original collection. The Masqueraders are a group highly regarded by soul connoisseurs, mainly for their ballads, but "Do You Love Me Baby" gallops along at a furious pace with cool harmonies behind the lead singers tortured vocals. The Luv Bugs "Mama's Gonna Whip You" has shades of the Jackson Five with an obviously very young lead singer. Curtis Blandon's mid paced "In The Long Run" produced by chicago legend Gene Chandler is still very popular on the northern scene today. And speaking of Chicago, the soul supremo that was Curtis Mayfield wrote and produced Patti Jo's "Make Me Believe In You" a record completely different from the traditional 'Northern Soul' sound with it's tricky rhythm and haunting strings and proves that northern soul sometimes refers to any record that is played at a northern soul venue and is accepted by the crowd rather than fitting any stylistic template. Shirley & Jessie represent New Orleans with "You Can't Fight Love" featuring the pounding beat indigenous to that city. The two best tracks come from the wonderful Maxine Brown with "Let Me Give You My Lovin" from the original album and "Wonder What My Baby's Doing Tonight" the first of the bonus tracks being first class examples of the crossover between pop and soul. The original sleevenotes by Ian Levine are included along with additional information on the artists because at the time of the original release very little, if anything was known about them. Guest mel brat Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 (edited) "Dearly Beloved" never come out on Pye Disco Demand surely, album or otherwise? The 'other side', "Do You Believe It" WAS on the Pye album compiled by Ian Levine though. I think you're all confusing it with the CD re-issues. Also, that LP was far from being the "first Northern Soul album" issued in the UK if you include the three compilations on JOY (a Jay Boy subsidiary) which included many Mirwood sides, or the 'Soul Bible' album on PROBE (Jackie Lee, Marvelows etc.) Edited April 5, 2009 by mel brat

Guest Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 "Dearly Beloved" never come out on Pye Disco Demand surely, album or otherwise? The 'other side', "Do You Believe It" WAS on the Pye album compiled by Ian Levine though. I think you're all confusing it with the CD re-issues. Also, that LP was far from being the "first Northern Soul album" issued in the UK if you include the three compilations on JOY (a Jay Boy subsidiary) which included many Mirwood sides, or the 'Soul Bible' album on PROBE (Jackie Lee, Marvelows etc.) the thread started by asking about 'Disco Demand'. there was nothing to suggest it was 'only 45's'. albums have been added in the thread. I didnt know there were 'rules' to what you were and were not allowed to add - i thought it was tracks released on Disco Demand regardless of whether it be 45, album or CD - Jack Montgomery Dearly Beloved is on a disco demand i have put the link up three times now but it seems people are still not clicking on it - perhaps this will make it easier: Disco Demand's Solid Soul Sensations: 26 Northern Soul Sounds Wow nearly thirty years since I bought the original release. At that time it was pretty groundbreaking, and even now it stands the test. Many of the tracks have gone onwards and upwards and some have fallen by the wayside. However as a compilation it still all stands together and now with 10 bonus tracks as well. Still sounding good is Patti Jo's make me believe in you which back then was completely different and along the newer funk route. Whereas Curtis Blandon was an out and out footstomper. Maxine Brown always sound good and the Masqueraders has always been big. Candy and the Kisses and the Shirlles remain top and Jack Montgomery was and is one of the best. For me this time there's more focus on the extras led by the georgeous and compelling Maxine Brown. Mel Wynn I don't want to lose you has a nice feel. Gentlemen Four has been a stormer over the last decade or so . The Honey Bees is an absolute gem, Stemmons whilst popular is on eto pass over in my view. Wally Cox was as I recall on another Disco Demand album at the time of more popular material. The Camp marching is an obscure vocal to a known instrumental. The Chancellors all the way from heaven is sublime and the best track on the album, great lead and exquisite strings. Marvin Jones (Jack Montgomery) Dearly Beloved is masterful Detroit and loved by everybody. Closing with a twee Earnestine Eady.
