Posted April 1, 200916 yr dont you think its time we dance comp just for the people who dont do back drops but can dance with the best. over 50 only footwork and spins
April 1, 200916 yr I don't think age should come into it, although I agree that youngsters will be better at the gymnastics. I tend to vacate the premises when the comps come on, as soulful dancing doesn't seem to come into it, and that's what I want to watch in the contenders. (I would love to be able to do the breakdancing stuff, but only to show off). It would be really nice to see a competition won by someone who is not able to jump upside-down with their head up their arse. Most of my favourite dancers on the scene are well past 40.

The Blackpool Tower winner last year(Keith from Rotherham) was a perfect example of a Dancer. He did throw in a few great tricks but it was mostly perfect footwork that got him the title,no gimmicks no baggy trousers just great dancing it was very refreshing to see,but i feel most judges are usually swayed by the flips
April 1, 200916 yr Not entirely.....but I think judges should rate it more on the quality of the footwork & interpretation, most ultra gymanistic dancers can't dance, some are just doing the tricks all the time, I think generally it's pretty boring after a while.....we were watching a few of Prestatyn 2009 on youtube & there's a guy that came out here a few years ago, we had to laugh at it/him, rolling round the floor, skipping & walking about alot....very comical, if that's dancing I'm a monkeys uncle. April 12, 200916 yr dont ya think that any dancer of any age is good at what they do whateva the moves!!!! sue ps Im 55 and can still dance my heart out wether it be northen or the birdie song lol
April 12, 200916 yr mooma said: dont ya think that any dancer of any age is good at what they do whateva the moves!!!! sue ps Im 55 and can still dance my heart out wether it be northen or the birdie song lol It would be nice to have a competition with a 'no hands on floor' rule to give a level playing field. Then the focus would be on the more soulfull aspect of dancing (the art) and you might have a shot a winning. Id defo have a go then but as it is the acrobatics are disproportionately weighted i think in most comps.
April 12, 200916 yr floor work needs to be at the right time....not "willy-nilly".... it comes at the break... not halfway through a low key vocal section...it comes at the impact crescendo...otherwise it just does not seem right.. too many acrobats cant dance a step in between....it's always interesting to watch though. pete n' susan KTF

Got to agree with you, I love to dance too, isn't that what Northern Soul is mainly about, that irresistable urge to dance. I have been known to walk into a venue, fling my coat etc onto nearest table and hit the floor dancing. Fortunately I like all the different genres of soul and can adjust my style of dancing to go with the music. I don't need alcohol to be able to dance, would probably fall over and dare not risk broken bones at my age!!!! My favourite floor has to be the Ritz Ballroom at Brighouse, it has just the right amount of spring, followed by Drax. East Kirkby has improved but I always bring the varnish back on my shoes! I am possibly one of the older dancers on the scene but as some-one said earlier, 'I will keep dancing until my knees give up', not happening just yet as I have the Metrodome to tackle tomorrow. See you there. Joyce
