Who produced Carl Carlton's "46 Drums - 1 Guitar" and "Competition Ain't Nothing"? There's no info on the US 45s... Carl's next few Back Beat singles were produced by the late Mike Terry, but I'm pretty sure these were not. There must be one Detroit nut out there who can confirm this beyond the shadow of a doubt. I don't need to know anything about any of Carl's other singles, just those two. This info is for an upcoming, multi-label Carl Carlton CD that a pal of mine at Universal USA is putting together, so if you want to get a booklet credit (and a copy of the CD when it comes out!) shout now! That's why I need help from someone who might have interviewed Carl and who might have asked him who produced the early Back Beat 45s. I'm still not ruling Mike Terry out, but I've always believed that he didn't start producing Carl on Back Beat until "Drop By My Place"...

Malone"-type aliases that Robey made up to claim credit that was not his to claim. Both have several songs listed on BMI and not all of them are with Universal/MCA Music (who bought Robey's Lion Publishing catalogue). I note that Buddy Lamp 'co-wrote' both sides of "46 Drums"/...Leave Us Alone", the ubiquitous 'Malone' being the other 'writer'. Perhaps Buddy also produced it? The thick plottens... I'll have a look through some old Shout and Soul Bag! mags as I think there might be some Back Beat session details in one of 'em. K

Not conclusive, but interesting all the same! Stuart Hi Stuart. The record was probably recorded at Tera Shirma studios in Detroit. Go on www.soulfuldetroit.com and ask Ralph about it. He may remember. Bob Babbitt may also remember. It was the same guy who ran those sessions. I just don't remember his name. He was from Texas I think. Dennis

Ta TONE Hi Tony The Galen Gart & Roy C Ames Duke Peacock Discography book has this to say regarding the producers used on Carl Carlton releases " These included Andre Williams from Detroit, Duke/Peacock regular Jay Wellington, Philadelphian Bunny Sigler, the mysterious 'Mr Woo', and ex-Motown baritone saxman, Mike Terry" Unfortunately the book doesn't say who produced what, but by a process of elimination it may give you some more names to chase down.
