"Watcha Gonna Do" - Willie J & Co/Sam & Kitty

"Running On Back To You" - Billy Harner

i quite liked 'floorshaker'

listening to the rest of the tracks it made me think that it would be good 'driving music'. now i need to learn to drive :D

If you listen to CeCe Rogers-Someday this is a perfect example of House hitting Northern Soul

(or what happens when an irrestible force hits an immovable object)

THERE'S SOUL ALL OVER THE PLACE.......................!!!!!!

Yes that wonderful piano riff was used in many dance tunes thereafter - I love "Someday" absolute classic.

Ironically..........most of these if played at WC in this format, probably would have been huge.

Russ

was thinking the same, I quite like the "watcha gonna do", not sure what house is mind, but I didnt think it was anything like these samples.

I would disagree & say that its not happened yet !!

I am a firm believer that Northern House will come - but its got be done a whole lot better than this !

Once an early seventies soulie, in more recent years I have been a regular at Jakartas world famous Stadium Night Club - massive atmosphere & pounding uptempo tribal progressive house - introduce some "northern" feeling into this kind of sound & it could become something big.

All Casino are doing is badly remixing a few classic Northern tracks & not very well at that ! They have managed to completely destroy Sam & Kittys "I've got something good" / "Watcha gonna do" one of my old favourites - if they continue to rip like this they wont be going very far in my honest opinion.

Most definitely agree..and the annoying thing for me is that I know there are people out there that can do a better job...members of this forum even.. :D

It needs to be someone that's been deeply into Northern and still loves it and also has a good knowledge of House.

There will always be the need for uptempo dancefloor Soul..whatever genre label it comes under because it's the most invigorating music.

It just needs someone to take the initiative..

This is nice - if you are into house, far far better than "The Casino" rip off merchants.

I like certain types of house & I was bought up on Northern Soul - Secret Sounds have mixed the two nicely.

Just my opinion.

The problem that 'House' has within the Northern Soul (All-Nighter) fraternity is that it's emergance kind of corresponded with the low point of the Nighter scene.

As Wigan closed it's doors, Rotherham, Leicester, Hinckley etc and the like carried the torch, playing later more cutting edge, funkier, jazzier/Modern releases....then the attendances and the hullabaloo tailed off - as black America opened it's production-mind to new technology.

This technology (sound) appealed to a younger audience at that time, and I suppose to an older crowd it seemed that the song and the vocal took a back seat to the production values.

US 'House' got played alongside more appealing, to a younger audience anyhow, European tracks built more around the feeling than the Soul.

The positioning of the 'House' explosion within what was happening on the Nighter scene precluded it from the Soul scene, nothing else.

The continuity of the Nighter scene was interrupted at that time - and House music was seen as something new by that scene, when it never was - it was just yesterdays Willi J & Co in played in that times format, yet sadly ignored.

Note my use of the term 'the Nighter scene', which had/has little to do with the true appreciation of soul music.

60's isn't deemed a dirty word, nor 70's, nor cross-over, Modern - whatever.

How so the useage of the term 'House', is?

Sensible answers that utilise more than two sentences only please.

(I'm just saving you volatile feckers from looking like a tit there - see - I do have a caring side.)

Its interesting - the House version of JJ Barnes - Baby please come back home (transworld) is part of Al Kents set up (Northern Disco inc)

Here is my take on records like this & a few of the angles it can be looked at

1 - Northern Soul fans who listen & think how could they do this to a JJ Barnes classic ? - they have just ruined it by putting a "disco beat" behind it.

2 - Northern Soul fans who listen & think that is an refreshing interpretation of a JJ Barnes classic.

3 - Soulful House fans who know nothing about Northern Soul or JJ Barnes & listen to it with no bias at all.

That was Al Kent's high point, a blinder of a tribute that lit dancefloors up at the time - why? Because his interpretation did to the kid today, exactly what it did to the kid of yesterday.

Al didn't lose the 'high on hope' core of JJ's original.

It just hit's the spot, as did the original - that piano hook is a killer, and Tyrone Taylor's vocal did it justice.

Big up Al.

I agree - this interpretation of an old classic by Al Kent shows his total understanding of quality black dance music both old & new - & to my way of thinking that is a talent worth having ( & rare !!).
