Barry Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Tell me. Does the fact that I burned bright, for fucking years, supporting this scene stand for nothing, now that I don't attend? I still buy Northern, always have. But it seems that the fact that I don't attend venues is seen to be my Achille's Heel, strangely. Yes, I progressed, enjoyed and bought, LOVED, newer forms of black music - but my Desert Island Discs will always be my main Northern box. Stands for nowt it seems on here, with certain others anyway. Simply for having the heart to keep abreast of the ongoing progression of American, in the main, black music, seems to bring about the ire of others. I understand this is a 'Northern' designated site, but the majority of my posts tend to be aimed at asking you to pin-point certain areas of this scene - the Northern scene, nothing else (look beyond my Bradford Disco Room heritage, that was two years of me at one venue - not all of me). Now, I'm telling you, it's not hard to multi-task with black music, try it sometimes. Don't diss - discuss.

Barry Posted March 20, 2009 Author Posted March 20, 2009 The answer that real men, Northern Soul lovers would give. Faultless.

Do your own thing and feck the begrudgers. I love the music and couldnt give two friggs what any one thinks of me on the scene. People should take you as a person and leave it at that. I judge people on the scene in the same way I would any other person and that is by whether they are a decent person or a wonker. Their contribution to the scene doesnt come in to it for me.

Barry Posted March 20, 2009 Author Posted March 20, 2009 THANKS SOUL BROTHER GMAN Mate, you have made my night with your post, no need for a thank you.
Guest andyrattigan Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 My contribution to this wonderful scene Andy came from my heart and my feet, nowhere else. I hope I didn't come across in any other manner? You came across fine Barry. All Im saying is I dont care what anyone thinks of me on the scene. I only get out every few months. When i get out I love dancing and totally immerse myslef in the music. Ive been in to Soul since I was 16 and have a put a lot of time and effort and money in to persuing this interest. Ive met mostly nice people on the secen but I come across a fair few idiots as well and lots of idiotic viewpoints I dont share. I hope people out and about would judge me on wheter Im a nice bloke or a wonker, depending on their viewpoint, rather than on my Soul Scene Status whatever the fcuk that is? Why look for any recognition of your contribution as you put it? Just do what you enjoy and let people think of you whatever they will.
Guest andyrattigan Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Im at work now and can hear the birds chirping. Are you lot on night shifts as well?
Gasher Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 YEP NIGHTSHIFT IS A GREAT TIME FOR CONTEMPLATION AND REFLECTION....ITS BEEN A WHILE SINCE I'VE MADE ANYONES NIGHT... YOU NEED TO GET OUT MORE....OR SO THE "REAL SOULIES" TELL YOU .....HAHA GMAN

Personal persecution at the hands of this music takes much more vim than public exhibition to me, nice to see I'm not alone.

ImberBoy Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 If you once was an avid football follower home games and the all important away matches enjoying all of the build up to the games ringing round, saving cash, planning meetings, juggling loved ones and responsibilities, car sharing, services breakfasts, bleary eyed Mondays, the thrill of strange and some times intimidating new places, then Kudos to you! If you are now at home watching it on TV telling every one who will listen "I was there" then join a internet forum and post in the early hours of the morning proclamations that you "still have it" and it has all changed since I was a lad...... then not so much Kudos don't you think? Barry, arm chair fans are like old soldiers, they get a bit fookin boring after a while and very predictable indeed I know I am one of them. You don't have to do nighters and you don't have to do soul nights but you can only comment about the music that is coming out of your speaker, you can not comment on today's scene unless you are part of it and immersing your self other wise its like watching a football game on TV, you will see every goal but the pies wont taste the same. Today's scene is not last year, it is not Bradford, and it's definitely not Wigan Casino. There is a mega nostalgia scene but this is completely and I do mean completely different than "The Northernsoul Scene". The music is the same....... well sort of? The nostalgia scene has become a caricature of Wigan Casino I don't mean that every one is wearing Baggy Trousers but there is a reluctance to dance or hear new music that is epidemic in proportions. I'll use Michael Jackson as an example, his early solo stuff was fantastic then he became a pastiche of his former self loosing his superbly brilliant originality to regurgitate time and time again crutch grabbing moon walking and idiotic posturing, we all like the music but no one wants to see Uncle knobhead don a sparkling glove at a wedding and go for it! "Does the fact that I burned bright, for fucking years, supporting this scene stand for nothing, now that I don't attend?" Yup didley fookin squat mate, sorry for the bad news but your now just a has been forum fighter ................. like me.

I have spent the last 25 years playing music to people three to five nights a week, hence my Nighter non attendance. I aim to make a difference with my weekends, spreading the word, unlike you 'Forum Fighters'. Armchairs are something I pass out on after a night of keeping American black music alive.
Tomangoes Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 I suppose its a matter of opinion. Some folks who never attended the dayers and nighters in their youth but now have jumped on the bandwagon of the scene could be judged as not full members, just as much as those who did the apprenticeship but have found the need to attend venues, not important or hard to do. Those who have remained attendees from 14 years old up to date could 'pull rank' but not many do. Northern Soul Freak / Northern Soul Obsession were popular terms back in the 70s and still apply today although the tilt may not be so much on the 'Northern' In the great big melting pot theres room for all, so as long as you are happy with what you get out of it, just enjoy it. Ed

Ed Ed I agree to a point, the forum is the melting pot, not the "scene" I compare it to the Manchester United fans, some travel the length and breadth of the country to support the team while others watch on Sky Sports, who are the real fans? The answer is both but it is those on the terraces who take the high ground, like it or not. Banging away on a key board is not the fookin Northernsoul scene, it is no not not not not, never will be and never was any thing like! You of course still have an opinion, every one does, and I will listen (read) every ones BUT The opinion of one who has just walked off the dance floor covered in sweat from giving it large to a tune compared to some one sat on a office type chair eating a beef sandwich and surfing between "Hot Juggs" and "Youtube", well I'm with the dancer ever time. Oh and no you don't need to dance but you if we want to We can leave your friends behind 'Cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance Well they're no friends of mine I say, we can go where we want to A place where they will never find And we can act like we come from out of this world Leave the real one far behind And we can dance Safety dance Is it safe to dance Is it safe to dance.
Barry Posted March 22, 2009 Author Posted March 22, 2009 To understand is a beautiful thing - it costs less and brings more. Say what you want. I understand...and it is so much more fulfilling, as you rely on no other than yourself. A total, impregnable security.
