Guest Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 That was the one, didn't say it was a tailor made, that was Alison being naughty. He did try to convince someone that he had found a complete clean cut as I recall, but it was so obviously a certain I Levine at the Joanna. I reckon the Adam Wade is a tailor made, probably at Burtons. link Bit of inside information here- it's Winifred Atwell. A real early Soul artist !
Guest cC B Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 Thats right isn't it? It had been called a boot before then, I think Frynn checked one and thought it was iffy. Someone else insisted they were pukka, wasn't sure where that came out but given the load that turned up so cheap at least those must have been boots. But was Ian's? I thought that sold for a good price when he sold up? link I remember an old discussion about this one on the Rare Soul Forum some years ago and someone with an original copy seemed pretty sure that they were boots. Don't know for sure if Ian's copy was original or not, but I was told he played a boot. Not that I really care though CB
Guest Johnny One Trout Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 As one of the "Vultures" I can indeed confirm this to be true. Things like Jim Gilstrap flew out of Ealing. I believe even the Motown collection has gone now Of the tunes you cited though they weren't all his, Benny Harper was an old John A thing that a number of us got - Ditto Sandy & Pebbles on Sussex - but hey I'm not here to slag someone off who isn't here to defend himself so at this point, so I'll carry on gnawing at this carcus of an animal I found dead by the side of the road this morning. link I wasn't neccessarily saying that Ian broke the records i mentioned only that there were part of his playlist at the time just showing that it wasn't all Joey Scarbury and Adam Wade
Steve G Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 I wasn't neccessarily saying that Ian broke the records i mentioned only that there were part of his playlist at the time just showing that it wasn't all Joey Scarbury and Adam Wade link Indeed and understood Trouty. He was hoovering up so many records 97-01 that he was bound to get some good ones no question. You just reminded me, I remember him at Victoria record fair getting 200 records off of soul bowl - filling his record box which arrived empty. And then the "manservant" who was employed to carry his masters box didn't put the lid on properly and all the records he'd just bought fell out over the floor. Ouch. Cue tantrum, beating with "Elephant whip" etc. BTW I did see multiple copies of all these "excloosivs" (Vandals, Valaquons, 7 Wonders etc) when I was doing my bit for "Vulture-ocity" .
Guest Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 I just had a call from the man in question. He's in hysterics at all the fuss thats going on! Whats making him laugh is the idea of a 'comeback" he's doing it as an away from London one off gig, because he's been asked too. Apparently, new projects take priority which i suppose means work. As mentioned before the Steve Brookstien album is taking priority as is ongoing work on the Rowetta album, a track of which is going on a new Brad Pitt soundtrack album plus there's some Dr Who film work going on. I don't get paid for this you know. Northern Soul - Coranation Street with better Music!

I'm sure that you'll send him our kindest regards.
Ady Croasdell Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 only heard him play out twice, once at 100club, pretty basic from what I remember, at the rocket in the modern room, that was a disater. I enjoyed his spot at the 100 Club, he checked his ego in at the cloakroom and concentrated on the floor. We got a good crowd too, despite a mini-boycott by diehards.
Guest Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 It wasn't Princess it was Empress dontcha just hate misquotes link And all her own fault for dossing in the disco room and missing his spot! We were sneeking in quietly and she refused to take her coat off, hence getting caught red handed
Guest Stuart T Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 Ditto link Which bit? You got a good crowd? BTW you've mispelt Snodland.
Guest Stuart T Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 Snodland? link As in "Princess of Snodland", Snodland in Kent, where Judge Dread was from and where they make the concrete. Thats where you meant isn't it? Sinatra sang I'm dreaming of a grey Christmas after visiting there.
Guest Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 Utterly ridiculous story, Levine returns to the scene, wants to be a superstar, hasn't got enough decent records, makes some of his own, says he used to have it years ago but lost the only copy and found some more in the US, is rumbled early on but refuses to accept that he has been sussed, lots of people fall for it or accept his behaviour, some people pay a lot for the record, eventually it comes out that the singer is the bloke that won some TV singing competition, Steve Bernstein, and now we are being asked to believe that Levine was just playing jokes with us. link So what IS the record like? That's the main thing IO suppose. Is it good? Does it sound authentic? Anyone know how I can get to hear it? Cheers
Guest Stuart T Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 So what IS the record like? That's the main thing IO suppose. Is it good? Does it sound authentic? Anyone know how I can get to hear it? Cheers link Not sure whether that is the main thing. Personally I thought it was pretty crap and doesn't sound like a period production so suonds about as authentic as that Heartbreak Avenue record, the b side was a complete giveaway as a modern recording, can't believe that people fell for it, but there seem to be those who like it. Goldmine put it on a CD, their Allnighter Series I believe. On the other hand, as Pete says, the Venetia Wilson isn't too bad. Think that is on the same CD. I hope that Ian and the artists got their royalties out of it.
Guest Stuart T Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 No, its deffo Snowland (git) link Snowland? Is that a reference to narcotic substances?
Guest Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 So what IS the record like? That's the main thing IO suppose. Is it good? Does it sound authentic? Anyone know how I can get to hear it? Cheers link I'm sure I recognise the smirky, smarmy, cleverdick style of this and the other posting.

Guest Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 Just been posted a date for all your diaries, July 30th in Edinburgh, Ian Levine is guesting along with Kenny Burrell, in some place called The Counting House which i've never heard off, thought this person had given up dj'ing after being found out about a certain Vandals record? link hi big man think i might be busy that nite i don't know venue neither maybe catch you next web
Guest Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 I'm sure I recognise the smirky, smarmy, cleverdick style of this and the other posting. link What's this supposed to mean? I have asked a couple of questions and I get this shit. I don't even know you. I don't think I do anyway.
Guest Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 Maybe a name, location or some personal details might might help ?
Guest Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 What? Now I'm supposed to be Ian Levine? OK here's the Cilla Black ... My name's Andy Philips, originally from Heysham. Now living in Catterick. Never even met or spoke to Levine. Not been on the scene for some time (8/9 years or so), apart from the local do in Catterick. I've been called some stuff in my time but never been called Ian Levine before.
Guest Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 Maybe a name, location or some personal details might might help ? link See my last post. Which was a reply to some of the other ones which people thought I was Levine.
Guest Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 I know your not Ian Levine. I said that. But you apparently are someone new on this forum who only joined a few days ago, leaves no signature and no personal details and who's first and only postings are about a very emotive subject (for some) regarding a very controversial record which you say you haven't heard. But in fact the thread isn't about the record but that is what you've picked up on. Apologies if you are who you say you are, but unfortunately for you, your style reeks of the particularly stinking, snide, divisive, two faced shit stirring of a particularly vile sad, lying wannabe who took particular delight in thinking he was clever by causing lots of bad feeling in a particularly creepy way about three years ago. And I know that the individual in question who now lives abroad, is watching this subject and reporting it back as he always did before stirring some more shit. But then if you are who you say you, are my apologies !
Chalky Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 That's my point Stevie Baby, he chose to push some controversial (and rather odd material at times), but his personal collection (from what I saw) was still extremely impressive. Must agree, Adam Wade was particularly gruesome link He HAD a decent collection...but it's gone! Top dealers....Tim Brown at least a couple of times, Koppell, Pat Brady, Mick Smith etc have all had the pick of what he had.
Bigsoulman Posted May 28, 2005 Author Posted May 28, 2005 hi big man think i might be busy that nite i don't know venue neither maybe catch you next web link So sorry you won't be going to the counting house to see his lordship gogs, sadly Jan has got me cleaning the bathroom that night...with my tongue but see you at the Web on Saturday mate

But then if you are who you say you, are my apologies ! link All this leaves me wondering what the heck I've walked into. What on earth happened to the scene I knew and loved? I've only joined to see what's going on the soul scene. And perhaps sell some records because I need money right now and the current value of some of the records I own leaves me gobsmacked. I haven't got a clue what you are on about and I'm glad I don't. I'm kind of wishing I had never joined the forum in one way and intrigued in another way. It's a bit like watching Footballers Wives.

Like I say. I didn't realise I was opening up a right can of worms with what was, to all intents and purposes, just some perfectly innocent questions about something I didnt know anything about. I will make sure that I try and find out a bit more before posting in future Cheers Andy

I'm not a front for anyone. I just joined to see what's going on and hopefully sell some sounds. This is like fucking Austin Powers or sommat. You really know how to make some one feel welcome. Years ago it was all about being friendly, shaking hands with folk, being pleased to meet people. I feel like I've walked into an alternate reality. What exactly do you want? Its like paranoid central in here. Andy

I've never come across such an arrogant, paranoid, miserable bunch of folk in my entire life. I'm obviously not welcome here. How on earth do you ever get new members in here? Or is it just a club for those who pass the test, give a DNA sample and get introduced by "one of the boys"?
