BrianB Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 Ian Levine may have sullied his reputation over the last few years. SWONS was well intentioned but turned out to be a big mistake. However, don't forget his massive contribution to NS. He discovered some of the biggest records ever, prior to his attempts to turn the Mecca in Studio 55. I know you can't live on past reputations, and Ian would be the first to admit that he is not the most likeable chappie, but I was at loads of venues in 1971 and he was at most of them as a fan and collector, and I know he still really loves the music. He made his choice though, tried to make money out of NS and we all know that is almost a cardinal sin. Be interesting to see what he plays, newies, 80s, 90s oldies or jazz funk type stuff.
Headsy Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 Can you "Scots" keep him north of the border please, and let us know if he tries to make a break for it over the wall? link as he has to come through Newcastle will have the Geordie mafia on border patrol, Kev Johnson will sort him out
vnicepce Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 Re the annoyance that I.L. creates, amongst the fraternity; how about the ultimate revenge(?).......you position I.L. on the floor, and then stampede him, to the opening bars of say, 'cashing in', or if you want be eally aggressive, 'my weakness is you'

Guest Jimmy Scriv Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 Was on route to the Torch from Blackpool Mecca in days gone by with Tony Jebb and Ian Levine when thick fog came down on the M6. Tony Jebb ordered Levine out of the car and made him walk in front of the car until fog lifted. One of the strangest things I have ever seen

Guest Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 Been out of it for a while. Whats the coup with the Vandals record? Is it one of the ones on T-Neck, and what's the story?
Steve G Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 Been out of it for a while. Whats the coup with the Vandals record? Is it one of the ones on T-Neck, and what's the story? link No not the same group - rather a UK group and a tailor made, which Ian pretended was an obscure "undiscovered" US track.
Ernie Andrews Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 If Im not looking after my daughter that weekend- I will be going. Not looking for nostagia but what has he come up with now! It could be facinating! Ian has had a chequered career but at least hes got the balls to put his money where his mouth is, and before anyone says anything yes I know his parents were well off. For those of us who used to frequent the Mecca when did you last see a DJ who used only one deck yet the floor was still full and romping?
Guest Stuart T Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 Been out of it for a while. Whats the coup with the Vandals record? Is it one of the ones on T-Neck, and what's the story? link Utterly ridiculous story, Levine returns to the scene, wants to be a superstar, hasn't got enough decent records, makes some of his own, says he used to have it years ago but lost the only copy and found some more in the US, is rumbled early on but refuses to accept that he has been sussed, lots of people fall for it or accept his behaviour, some people pay a lot for the record, eventually it comes out that the singer is the bloke that won some TV singing competition, Steve Bernstein, and now we are being asked to believe that Levine was just playing jokes with us.

Guest alison Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 hasn't got enough decent records link Stuart, I know he's not your favourite person but Ian had more records - very good ones - than probably anyone this list ! His record room was phenomenal. Pull a section out at random (and get your head bitten off for touching them ) and you would be holding in your hand a selection of must haves by anyones standards. Say what you will, but to say he didn't still have decent records simply isn't true.
Guest Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 Just realised my last message was number 69- my favorite- I think I'll make that my last posting. Oh f...........

Say what you will, but to say he didn't still have decent records simply isn't true. link Disagree. He may have had a reasonable but sizeable collection but he hardly had the sounds to compete with the top DJs, which is what he wanted to do. In fact looking at his early come back playllists it is questionable whether he should have been behind the decks at all apart from on his past reputation, allegations that he was playing bootlegs as well tend to indicate that he lacked good quality originals. He was buying piles of old crap being offloaded by every dealer under the sun at one stage, eventually he started building a reasonable set of discs, nothing that special by the looks of it, can't say from that many would be that jealous. No wonder he had to make his two biggest sounds himself (4Vs and Venetia Wotsit). Vaguely remember some Contours (?) track he had as well where the dubbed over piano intro sounds so like it could be Ian Levine playing... PMSL ridiculous man. Edited May 26, 2005 by Stuart T
