Barry Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 For once I am going to attempt to use a negative to prop up a positive. Name me the positive things that once set this scene apart from others. I swear that if anyone has the balls (that was just done to incite btw) to go for this post, they will state the things that made it special yesterday, those same things in todays world do hold this scene back. Barry Posted March 18, 2009 Author Posted March 18, 2009 Point: Is/was NS and it's subsequent scene just a medal, held up in our own minds. A medal obtained only by sitting outside the majority (reality) by a fraternity of people that couldn't cope with anything other than dealing with people once a week for a twelve hour period? Whereby we all talked shit about what was relevant to us - music and gear - then didn't have to worry about the following shit six days that followed it? Of course it was. I've answered my own question again. Arse!
ImberBoy Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 If there is a "medal attitude' it's only ever after the perception of time having been invested. It's the same as newbie's on the football terraces, after "time"; there is a perceived realization that they become the "old guard'. As soon as this happens its natural to get into the "When I was a lad" mind set and even to look down upon those who haven't spent the same "time" and dedication to you. This then all gets a little complicated and fractured when some realize that the "When I was a lad" stance can be mimicked to fit in or even when one attempts to climb or score brownie points, idle boasts and fibbing follows. The Northernsoul old guard "medaled" it as does every one, natural, normal and inevitable.

Little-stevie Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Another one of those questions Barry.. Can't talk about what was and what is now really... Then many were teenagers with no cares at all with all life in front of us.. Now most are middle age or more and have been through so much... Still a strong all niter crowd that live for the weekend but not in the numbers it was back then..
Guest JerryL Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 I Grew up with Motown in the 60s and when I arrived at the now known as "Northern soul scene" in 1970 I was in heaven...an underground scene that was exciting, musicaly right up my street and unique, great people from ALL over the country coming together in friendship and for common purpose....above all others the love of music. This was signified by the Torch, My mate says the wheel, my other mate says "up the junction" Crewe..each to there own......I think the scene was Murdered by Russ Winstanely and wigan casino opening the doors to the world of media, people who sold out the scene for cash.......Simon soussan tried, sorry DID murder the record collectors scene with tons of pressings and tailor made rubbish which was a shadow of the original recordings........(See other thread about Tailor made records) And there are many others who joined in as they saw it a short cut to "get rich quick" The djs resorted to piss poor failed pop records that as long as you could dance to it it was a big sound......You tube is littered with fools commenting KTF every two minutes and to every record...does my head in. Just want to say to people if you think it was good at wigan during the mid 70s, it was a million times better in the earlier years. For me there are so many negatives in what was a truely wonderfull underground music scene that music still gives me goose bumps today in my mid 50s

For me there are so many negatives in what was a truely wonderfull underground music scene that music still gives me goose bumps today in my mid 50s At the risk of placing my head in the obvious noose, I have to say that I agree with most of the above. "...an underground scene that was exciting, musically right up my street and unique, great people from ALL over the country coming together in friendship and for common purpose....above all others the love of music." "...people who sold out the scene for cash" "...many others who joined in as they saw it a short cut to get rich quick" The early Northern Soul Scene was unique in my experience in that it really DID seem like one big family (or "brotherhood", if you can bear to be reminded of the way we spoke and thought back then) It was built from the bottom up by folk who loved SOUL MUSIC. Not just 'Northern Soul', not day trippers in it mainly for vicarious excitement or the drugs - and certainly not wannabe "stars" pathetically desperate to see themselves "on the telly" or in the Sunday Times Magazine! Such an obvious commercial sell out was absolute and total anathema! Much of that early passion and fervour seems to have got diluted and lost along the way, and then, while we weren't even looking, we suddenly went and got all got kinda... well, OLD n' stuff! Luckily, much of what I first encountered on the UK Northern Scene has remained intact. The genuine friendliness and the sense of collective human experience that is engendered by the music is the very essence of "Soul" to me. All the rest is bullshit and propaganda I say!
