Dave Thorley Posted March 15, 2009 Posted March 15, 2009 (edited) Just got back from Prestatyn. The live acts were great, not just the singing performances, but the backing group, quality of sound and they were clearly well rehursed. So often in the UK we get artists put on at soul events, that haven't sang for many years, don't know half the words and you think 'why?? such a shame'. In addition some not even with a group, but to backing tracks, it cheats the public and the artists. Now I know some say it's about cost, but if the whole thing is so poor then just don't bother. Last night was a sheer delight and when the The Volumes aka The Magnetics, sang 'Lady in green' several people near to me were in tears. The hit all the key changes, harmonies, a moment of sheer magic, a northern soul classic brought to life. Add to that a belting set from one of my favorite girl singers Eula Cooper, 'Beggers can't be choosers'. Last night will live with me for many a year. Then went next door and Incognito did a master class in the same. There are many things I don't like about the event, but the live acts there get better and better and for these I keep coming back. Dave Moore Posted March 15, 2009 Posted March 15, 2009 Just Can't Help Myself Gotta Give Her Love I Love You Aint Gonna Give You Up Heart You Made Of Stone Lady In Green Same Old Feeling They were good. In fact they were really good. Sounded tight, timing was on, nice pitch, the guys can still do it. Ranks up with seeing The Masqueraders and The Precisions. Eula Cooper - Lots of stage prescence, confident and sounded good. Lenis Guess - Great rendition of his classic. Benny Troy - Bit of turn up for the book. Guy pulled off a great song and did it with style. Bobby Patterson - Consummate showman. Songwriter extraordinaire and sounded great. Big well done to all concerned. I thought the blend of artists was good too. Top show all round.

Ady Potts Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Did anyone ask the Volumes how many of the group members that are in the group now were in the group way back when they recorded the Magnetics - Lady in green ? Would be interesting to know.
Maria O Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Did anyone ask the Volumes how many of the group members that are in the group now were in the group way back when they recorded the Magnetics - Lady in green ? Would be interesting to know. I heard it was 2 members. Chalky - my you-tube account (link via our website) has a few bits captured, but have one or two more to upload tonight, as they take forever. Others will add theirs this week I suspect and the search facility will help you find them. m

Would be interesting to know. Yep, 2 members of the Volumes were part of the Detroit Magnetics. Mark Speakman had a great photo with the two of them and the Bonnie disc. Nice!
Ady Potts Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 (edited) Gotcha. Listening to the youtube clip, sounds like the lead singer could have been the original lead on the Magnetics. Edited March 17, 2009 by pottsy
