All of side 1 of the Pieces Of A Man album.

Saw him live at Bradford University students union back in the 7ts. Still one of the best shows I've ever seen.

"When You Are Who You Are"

"Madison Avenue"

"Your Daddy Loves You"

"Angel Dust"

"Hello Sunday Hello Road"

All spring to mind plus those already mentioned

His "spoken word" tracks are worthy too, always bitingly accurate and honest but with a wicked humour twist

Good to see hes schedualed to make a live appearance @ "Blues Alley" in his hometown Washington DC soon too

Nice to see a Gil thread

Sadly Gil's father passed away about six months ago. He was living in Michigan and still obsessed with Scottish football. According to Gil's brother he was banned from Michigan School's Soccer Games for swearing from the side of the pitch, a habit he picked up in Glasgow. He married a Scots woman he met in Glasgow, who became Gil's step-mother. Gil's dad Giles played for a Chicago team called the Chicago Maroons who Celtic played in a pre-season tour of USA and Canada in around 1948. Gil played for Celtic with the legendary clown prince of football Charlie Tully.

I agree 'Almost Lost Detroit' brilliant.

The title track to the album Winter In America is just superb.

The stark lyrics, such as 'cities staggered on coastlines', forests beneath highways',

'robins perched on barren treetops watching last ditch racists marching across the floor'

& 'democracy is ragtime on the corner'. Powerful stuff.

Wonder what an old recalcitrant lefty like GSH thought to Obama's historic election?

From the Indians who welcomed the pilgrims

And to the buffalo who once ruled the plains

Like the vultures circling beneath the dark clouds

Looking for the rain

Looking for the rain

Just like the cities staggered on the coastline

Living in a nation that just can't stand much more

Like the forest buried beneath the highway

Never had a chance to grow

Never had a chance to grow

And now it's winter

Winter in America

Yes and all of the healers have been killed

Or sent away, yeah

But the people know, the people know

It's winter

Winter in America

And ain't nobody fighting

'Cause nobody knows what to say

Save your soul, Lord knows

From Winter in America

The Constitution

A noble piece of paper

With free society

Struggled but it died in vain

And now Democracy is ragtime on the corner

Hoping for some rain

Looks like it's hoping

Hoping for some rain

And I see the robins

Perched in barren treetops

Watching last-ditch racists marching across the floor

But just like the peace sign that vanished in our dreams

Never had a chance to grow

Never had a chance to grow

And now it's winter

It's winter in America

And all of the healers have been killed

Or been betrayed

Yeah, but the people know, people know

It's winter, Lord knows

It's winter in America

And ain't nobody fighting

Cause nobody knows what to save

Save your souls

From Winter in America

And now it's winter

Winter in America

And all of the healers done been killed or sent away

Yeah, and the people know, people know

It's winter

Winter in America

And ain't nobody fighting

Cause nobody knows what to save

So political and so f***king right !

talking about the state of the ghetto "Whitey's on the moon" is brilliant, a true piece of poetry !

saw him in Sheffield 14 years ago, he's been deported from the UK several times as well !

Not sure when he was last/next over, but promoters are always worried that UK authorities won't let him in ! laugh.gif

Why would the UK deport him?

On what grounds? Work permit irregularities?

Surely we hear worse at Speakers' Corner, as far as 'free speech' is concerned.

Not sure, but he smokes an awful lot of "blow" in his show !

There is also the Work permit thing, with bad promters in the past Gil did some iffy shows and didn't pay the Tax

There is an absolutely fantastic dancer by Gil Scott Heron that can be found "right underneath everybody's noses" so to speak ...

The flip side of The Bottle !

A tune called "Back Home".

I was very honored to promote Gil in concert here in Bournemouth back in 1993. He and his band were absolutely stunning. I have the live concert recorded on dat and just marvel at the mans artistry & energy. The Concert itself was one of the best I've ever promoted but my one lasting memory is watching the sound check in the afternoon where Gil sat at the fender Rhodes and did 'The Bottle' by himself, just keyboards and THAT voice! Fucking amazing! He was then joined by each band member one by one until the whole band jammed on the groove for about 20 minutes. Stunning and a once in a lifetime experience. My all time favorite has to be 'It's your world'

He had a fantastic band with him back in the 80s when I used to see him live in London, fairly often

His bassist was a guy called Robert Gordon who was amazing. He ( R G) also had his own "go go" band who played the Wag club one memorable midweek night.

I've seen Gil a couple of times at the Jazz Cafe in London. What can I say? A master at work.

Like the man says I feel blessed to have seen him.

Hi Stu

Hows tricks with you. I saw him live at a Womad festival in The West Counrty, only a relatively small crowd, but he was amazing. Just went to see him and he didn't disappoint
