Shsdave Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 I can't belive my eyes One persons comment on here (from a so called 'respected' member) is in complete contradiction to what they have said in private - OVO to the max on open forum - but have said to me that they "do not give a shit about boots/reissues/carvers or what ever" being played Apparently, it is the ones who pretend to be something they are not that frustrates them Have only had a quick skim through so this may well have been dealt with more fully "down the line", but thats exactly what I thought Mike Firkin hypocrite !

Reckon its yes to all your other questions. This is what these hypocrites quote isn't it? I used to have it on original, I used to be a big name, & they seem to think that it gives them some right to play carvers & boots..... & there are some names doing it ! One very important mover from the 80s was booked to play a nighter in the midlands a couple of years ago & turned up & bought his play list from the record bar on boots & 7s. I'm not going to name any names but there's one on this thread who used to say OVO & then went through a phase of suggesting that "really it was all about the music, not the labels" (perhaps he had been selling his big money stuff?) & now seems to be back on the OVO stance. (on this thread anyway ) have fun

Modernsoulsucks Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 (edited) Yup I think he has "issues" with certain promotors of certain soul nights . But our D'Arcy tends to like the really fast stuff too. And I did talk to Chadwick at Leeds - one of Pat Brady's niters at the Griffin - that's how I know about Bobby Womack, Sam Dees etc - you could see the eyes glaze over with complete dis-interest when the names came up.... Yes I agree a few emis have always been played, can't deny that. And who knows maybe Russ played some of the bootlegs he was selling - that damn stage was so high I couldn't be bothered to climb up there too often. Maybe we should move off OVO then and DJs, other snobbish elements? - decent beer, comfy surroundings, good sound system, good dancefloor, all traits of the "soul snob"? I quite agree. Just last week I was sharing a fine bottle of Chateau Neuf du Pape with Jo Armstead who was incredulous that there are some collectors and dj's out there who have to make do with the 1.09mm Salvadors release, and I did mention then that snobbery and pretention were rife nowadays but I didn't get involved myself. Des Crombie Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 Actually what is a 1.09mm Salvadors? and who has eyesight that can measure 1.09mm anyway??? According to manships boot guide you can visually tell it is a 1.09mm issue as the masterplate received a slight knock between pressing runs resulting in two visible dimples on the record. My copy has these dimples so it's a 1.09mm issue.

Modernsoulsucks Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 Ignore Gorgonzilla he's too veined to accept defeat and is just clutching at straws. The 1.09mm was brought to my attention by Mr. Manship in a recent auction to differentiate that from the St.Louis pressing. As Godz pointed out I found it fairly amusing to think we had come to this in relation to listening to the music we love and I'd imagine it's the kinda stuff maybe spouted by someone out to parade their superiority hence my inclusion in a hopefully funny aside completely ruined by Godz picking me up [quite rightly] on my spelling of Chateauneuf... And now Red Riding. ROD

Guest ScooterNik Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 Yes, I am! Read any playlists, reviews etc from Morley Carr, Burnley, YSC, Wilton and over the years 100 club, Yarmouth weekenders, etc etc ad infinitum, and I don't think you will find any comments about "showing off!" I was born without nerves, anyone on here that actually knows me will tell you that! I enjoy doing a good job, always do a good job, know I can do a good job and take satisfaction from a job well done. After 30 -odd years of doing it, anyone should be able to say the same! Self confidence can often be mistaken for arrogance, usually by those that haven't any themselves, but if you know you can do something, why worry! As you don't even know me, I find your remark- " I think you're more interested in showing off your collection than in actually playing to the floor" F***ING OFFENSIVE! Apologies, it was a spur of the moment comment and a generalisation about quite a lot of DJs who I've heard both on and off the soul scene. As i've said a few times, I wouldn't dare to DJ a soul do, I don't have the records and will admit it. But where I do DJ I never repeat a set, never go in with a set list, and rely on my knowledge of whats on the 200 CDs I take (remember this ISN'T the soul scene so its not an offence!) to mix it up and hopefully fill the floor. I suppose to a large extent I'm actually agreeing with a lot of what is said on this thread, I won't DJ on the soul scene because I could only put a decent set together using one form or another of 're-issue', BUT I'm not entirely convinced by the OVO argument. If I went to a major event then I think I'd be disappointed not to get the real deal, but at the lower level local do I don't see a problem as long as there is no pretence about it.
Guest WPaulVanDyk Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 a lot of punters don't care what format the record is on they just want to hear the song. but i have started to sort all my records and dad's records into original and re-issues. It's fair to say i would play all original if i DJed unless it's a record i really want to play and will play it from re-issue it's rare i would my rarest record i ever brought was Jackie Wilson - Higher and Higher LP for something like £20 cause i usually look for cheaper records that can be just as good. Maybe if i put money aside and get to something like £100 i can buy the ones i want on original vinyl but only if i know they are original. Ebay can't always be that trusting
