If my memory serves me right, were'nt these the ones people used to have made in a booth and readily available ?

Before my time of course but seem to recall Harry and a few others discussing em a while back :)

Used to own an 'emidisc' machine (seem to think I bought it off Jeff King of soul sounds fame!)

Used to cut them to 'order' - a pal of mine 'Twink' then sold them at Wigan etc - I had 'retired' from the scene at the time, but had the original 45s to cut from! Think we sold them for a fiver each ( the blanks were 50p - more expensive than a single at the time, therefore you couldn't boot the top 20 biggrin.gif

Seem to remember we had to record the music onto a reel to reel tape before 'cutting'

I believe Chris King owns a 'collection' of emidisc machines.

Went with Pete lawson a few times to Deroy recording studios in Carnforth. This is where he used to get his cut. Used to put 2 tracks on each side & sell for a fiver. The good thing for Pete was, if he didn't have some of the top sounds, many of the big DJs of the time used to make copies of theirs there, and the owner used to let Pete get copies. Keith Bradley also from Ormskirk used to trade in them as well, much to the chagrin of Frank Elson, who threatened to issue writs!.

I remember my first emi was Workin' At the Go Go B/W Sugar Pie Honey

They weren't the ones cut in booths Nev, but the acetate that guy was selling was one that someone had cut for them.

Pete Ive just looked at the ebay item.

One problem with what you say- As I worked for Global I am sure I saw 4 or 5 emidiscs of this in the office before the Cream release.

So they might have been cut from the tapes!

I haven't seen Keith for years, I left Ormskirk in 76 when I joined the Navy, & hardly went back. I was reminded of it this morning as I was doing my morning ritual. I like to read old B&S and to a lesser extent Black Music. and I came across the Frank Elson legal threat to Keith.

This from B&S 148, Nov 19 1974

Was that the Marsha Gee with the Hollywood Persuaders on the other side?

God it's years since I last heard about Delroy Studios.

That's how I first meet Pete by getting some emis off him, ended up getting friendly with Pete and little Sean.

Also knew Keith as well, wasn't Keith's dad somthing to do with the Church?

If you went to Wigan etc back than with them, I might have meet you.

Dave.

You didn't pick up any of the non-soul stuff from Deroy, did you?

I'd give you a quid or two for them.... rolleyes.gif

It might possibly be a UK CREAM pre-release acetate... but I very much doubt it! Convenient that he hasn't mentioned the title on the b-side. (it's probably "The Spy" or something similar!)

My verdict: Nasty, dirty rotten bootleg

Ya the infamous fast George Blackwell, I remember when he took them to the Mecca. Orange label if I remember.

Neil and Stewart from Horwich (Soul Twins Mr M's) got one, they rang me up on the Sunday to tell me it was wrong speed.

I didn't laugh much honest smile.gif . I had forgot about Marsha Gee.

Well, the handwriting is Pep's, typical of the 70's emi discs he used to get done in mid 70's

As you say, probably something well known on the other side.

This Is a Illicit boot could come from many differant places as in 72 to 75 we all new someone who could do a one of in the North Midlands and the South value wise they are Northern Soul History as such one day they will mean something to someone, I know a fine art studant who use to rave about the artwork some soul fans would put onto record sleves as some kind of social statement. One Day but I bet I am Long Gone value £1 DAVE KIL

great label EMI-DISC

every top record from 1973 to 1979 was issued on it-double siders as well

There was a standing joke in Mansfield that a certain Nottingham DJ (still around) had that many EMI's that he couldn't actually pick his record box up anymore :P

I know the hand writing on the one for sale, I've still got a copy of "Hot line"/"Elusive" from Cleethorpes around the same time as this, same hand writting.

Then 4 track EMI's started to appear, Still have Billy Woods, Candi Staton, Earnest Mosley & Carol Woods on one which I kept (Ended up with originals of all of them !) Which I suspect may have been done off the decks at Wigan, by a rouge DJ who was later sacked ! ph34r.gif

alot of legit EMIs had the titles done on a type-writer, seen hundreds of Pop titles on my travels over the years.

But I've a confession to make --I LOVE THE SMELL OF THEM :D:):)

I agree Mick, it's definitely Pep's handwriting on the label
