Can someone out there help me please ? At present the vote is 4 v 5

On Towana & Total Destruction - Wear your natural baby is it, or isn't it Ty Karim?

Listening to the vocals I have no doubt in my mind that it is, however certain very knowledgeable soulies inform me that is in fact her daughter.

Like I say at present it's a split vote, but does anyone know for sure. On the sleeve notes on one of the Goldmine CDs Tim Brown states that it is actually Ty Karim.

Should help you decide here www.zen28969.zen.co.uk/ty.MP3

Does anyone have a contact for Andy Rix, he apparently is a friend of the family, and will know for sure.

Many thanks

100% Ty Karim

I reckon not. Dave Flynn played me some unissued outakes from the recording session which I believe Ady Croasdell provided to him. There was a cut of Wear Your Natural that sounded like Ty Karim and wasn't the released version. Vocal was very different. The person singing background vocals (who was being called stubborn in the studio banter in a sort of motherly/big sister kind of way) sounds a dead ringer for the vocalist on the Towana single. Therefore I don't reckon it is Ty Karim (controversial eh?), but her daughter came down the 100 Club a few years back and was almost certainly too young to be on the record. Maybe it was a sister or something?

Anyhow, Ady, you going to release these recordings sometime? There was a great bluesy mid tempo number if I recall correctly.

I've been told that Towana was the daughter of Ty Karim and the Romark label owner (name escapes me) - this from a guy who bought the remaining stock from the Romark owner some years ago.

The b side of Ty Karim's "Keep on doing" on Sheridan House is by "Ty & Towana". Which would suggest they are two different people. Towana Hill also had a track on the same label. I was told Towana is Ty's sister.

She would have been too young.

Towana is definetly her daughter. As Stuart says, she came to the 100 club.

Ady played - you really made it good, to a full dancefloor before announcing she was there. She told us later how thrilled she was that her mothers songs were so popular.

Eddie, since selling you Lighten' up, I cant listen to it any more. Its still too painful :)

Towana is DEFINITELY 100% Ty Karim's daughter - I was told this by Ty's other daughter at a record fair in London. She was over here singing with the UK group Red Snapper. Bought my copy of Lighten Up from her that day - and she sang it to me....which was nice

Can anyone tell me if the Keep On Doin' What You're Doin' 12" with George Griffin was ever sighted before the late 80s? The date on the label is 1980, if memory serves, but I don't remember hearing any mention of it until a few copies came over via Voices in about 1988. Also, is this on any legitimate 7" copy?

I first heard it about then too. Never seen a 7" of it but you really need the full version anyway. A great going to the bar record if you're dj'ing.

This is a coincidence, I was just writing something up about this record (the 7") for our local club newsletter -- so I have a scan handy of it!

Ty Karim is definately singing.

Agree with Chalky there's no doubt Ty Karim is the singer. Test for me is always 75% of the way through a record. Listen to 'Lighten Up', 'Natural' and indeed the flipside 'Help Me Get That Feelin' Back Again,' which is still the most 'conventional' northern track. Ty Karim's voice comes through on all three. Its almost as if she gets bored with being a good soul singer and decides to be a great one. Its a slight shreek and its trade mark Ty.

Brilliant.
