Whilst grazing on another thread, I felt the need to explore what commercial soul sounds (loosely speaking) you/me would be happy to admit to liking to.

For instance, I like

"You can do magic"

"I'm doin fine now"

Own up remember confession is good for the SOUL!!

Until You Come Back To Me - Aretha Franklin

Never Can Say Goodbye - Jackson 5

Tell Me What You Want - Jimmy Ruffin

IMHO These are just good soul records - I think the word "commercial" refers to the fact they sold well & hit the mainstream charts - this does not detract from their quality. Perhaps we sometimes get bogged down in the rarity & value syndrome to listen to what real quality is hiding in the dark corners of our boxes.

Spot on epic, by commercial, I meant tracks that fall within the soul genre, but charted. It wasn't meant to be a majorly serious thread, just a bit of fun, really.

In its day I thought it was just a nice sound now because of various other versions, a thread on here and a new cover by Darrel Ball and John Scroates. I have rediscovered "I'll Be Around" Detroit Spinners

I liked just about all the soul stuff in the charts in the 70s.

I'm not a big fan of Stevie Wonder, but Sir Duke and I wish are probably among my faves, along with The Moments of course
