Guest MBarrett Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 Just noticed that this programme called "The Single Story" is on Radio 2 next week. Wednesday at 11.30 p.m. Sixty years ago, RCA Victor brought out the first 45 rpm singles - on colour-coded vinyl. Country-and-western music was green vinyl, pop was black, and rhythm 'n blues was orange. I suppose some people on here knew that - I didn't. Anyway it's the first of four programmes on "the birth of the single, the rise of pop, and the much loved vinyl disc's amazing endurance". MB

Guest MBarrett Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 (edited) But you can listen again on BBC iPlayer. Phew - thank heavens for iPlayer!! (Sorry for giving duff info - realise now that the pages of my TV/Radio guide had got out of order.) Just listened myself on iPlayer and I thought very interesting. How many people knew first L.P.'s came out before the first 45 rpm singles - NOT ME!! MB Edited March 11, 2009 by MBarrett
Guest Matt Male Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 How many people knew first L.P.'s came out before the first 45 rpm singles - NOT ME!! MB Or that 45s came out as a competeting format to LPs. Completely bizarre.
Guest MBarrett Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 Completely bizarre. Another thing that struck me as totally bizarre when I first heard it (not from this programme) . . . . . . . Over the years we have all read lists of the "best records of all time" So if you had to list the top-selling albums of the early 60's it would have to start with some Elvis - then all the Beatles albums - almost certainly some Beach Boys - . . . . . . . NOT SO!! In the U.S. it ran: 1960 - sound track of the film Sound of Music 1961 - sound track of the film Camelot 1962 - sound track of the film West Side Story 1963 - sound track of the film West Side Story 1964 - sound track of the film Hello, Dolly! 1965 - sound track of the film Mary Poppins 1966 - Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass Truly bizarre!
