Guest wigantojapan Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 Hi all was the above sound ever booted .I am just in the process of buying this classic but the seller is a little suspicious as the label looks a bit cheap and there is a huge run out. Any info appreciated and a scan would be great thanks
Kjw Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 No, never bootlegged or re-issued etc. All copies have the large run out. Think 'I'll Always Love You' is the B side on the Southbound release. 1
Guest wigantojapan Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 yep was booted on warren 108 boot is yellow I,m asking about the southbound issue please thanks
Guest in town Mikey Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 (edited) The Southbound issue is Black, and has a large run out groove. I think the writing is silver, and has very blurred edges to the lettering. As you say the lable is of very poor quality, and cheap............ in fact its perfect. Just how a rare soul lable should look ;-) But if any record looks like a boot, its the original of this. Edited March 5, 2009 by in town Mikey

Godzilla Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 Southbound is blue multi coloured Mikey, and the other(warren) the stamp is in the label. Blue label with red writing and a pics of two women with an afros over a map.

Godzilla Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 so do all yous guys agree that the southbound was never booted only the warren? is that right cheers Yup. Although I think Mikey was right about the Southbound orig having an unusually large run out, which could make someone suspicious. Perfectly ok though.
Steve G Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 so do all yous guys agree that the southbound was never booted only the warren? is that right cheers Yes.
Kjw Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 The Southbound issue is a different mix of the Warren version - slower with a more Southern sound to it Think it came out in the 70's

Guest Salv Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 Did a load of the Southbound 45s turn up in the mid-late 80s? I bought a mint copy in Record Corner in Balham in about 1987, and I was surprised to see the 1972 date when I got it home.
Guest Trevski Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 One off popsike here. Not the best quality but you get the picture (ahem!) Better label than the Warren release, but the Warren is a better version IMHO.

Bought one from Record corner about the same time but didn't like it as much as the Warren Copy. Didn't you get that Ken? Sold the W/D to Billy. Not got any now. Kev
Guest Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 Also a version by New Cymbals on De-Lite Also another brilliant version by Felton Burks on De-Lite (i've just let this one go on a trade to someone on SS) it's a tough one apparently

Record Corner had a pile of them - I bought about 15 of them for £3 each when they were in the process of closing and selling everything off
Guest mel brat Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 (edited) so do all you guys agree that the southbound was never booted only the warren? is that right cheers The Southbound version is a re-recording of the Northern classic on Warren (which was an early Blackpool Mecca anthem). I reckon it's a nice version in itself, however I cannot see that it would have been bootlegged, as there has been no real demand for it on the wider Northern scene that I'm aware of (unlike the 60s Warren cut and the Betty Fykes thing on Southbound) The label design possibly refers to the Civil Rights marches from Selma to Montgomery Alabama in 1965, organised in order to secure voting rights for black American citizens. As such, it's a little piece of Soul history in itself. Edited March 5, 2009 by mel brat

Now what are YOU going on about? I stand by what I said above. If the Southbound release has been "getting spins" it's only been in fairly recent years, as the record was selling for as little as £2 not that very long ago. I know 'cos I bought one from a record fair. I take it you don't like the original Warren version of this song, as that was the one played at Blackpool (before my time however). I've never been to the 'Macca' however. Perhaps they played the Southbound version there!

Well, since you ask I picked it up at a record fair at Walsall Town Hall only a few years ago. I'd never seen the record before and thought the label was cool, so I took a chance on it (Obviously I guessed it was a re-recording of the Warren version. I didn't know about the Betty Fykes biggie on the label!) I quite like it, but prefer the Warren version. Still, as I said it's not bad in itself and worth having for a few quid. I'm pretty sure it wasn't worth much more at that time! £30 though is another matter... Edited March 5, 2009 by mel brat

Betty Fykes is cool...................i find when someone says they got a tune for two bob a couple of years back really means two bob a couple of decades ago maybe.

Actually, you may well have a point, as even 20 years ago ain't that long to me! However, it was definitely £2 when I bought it a few years ago. Maybe the dealer had the huge batch of 'em under the counter. I really can't say. I do think though that record prices sometimes bear no relation to availability - or even actual demand! If seems if a top dealer sets a price everyone else tends to follow suit. Anyway, I was merely making the point that it was unlikely to have been bootlegged, as I'm sure the wider demand for it isn't there (at present). I think that's a perfectly reasonable assumption.
