Guest mel brat Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Hi! Today i'm surprised with the selling price on copy of Towanda Barnes that it was sold for 13 GBP . Here One question for the real collectors. It's an original copy or a boot ? Thanks Stphane It's a 70s re-issue. Towanda Barnes wasn't bootlegged (as far as I'm aware).
Pete S Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 It's a 70s re-issue. Towanda Barnes wasn't bootlegged (as far as I'm aware). You're spot on. The original is on the brown label A & M (and white demo). I've seen these reissues go for £30 plus!
Guest REVILOT Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 It's a 70s re-issue. Towanda Barnes wasn't bootlegged (as far as I'm aware). I agree. A genuine release, but as it came out at the time of weekly re-pressings it was assumed by many to be yet another. Great version of The Ohio Players on Compass.
Stefan Posted March 2, 2009 Author Posted March 2, 2009 Thank you for your fast & precise answers ... There's an another white demo on sale !

Stefan Posted March 2, 2009 Author Posted March 2, 2009 cHECK OUT THE OHIO PLAYERS CUT? A LOT CHEAPER BUT SOUND BETTER THAN THIS VERSION IN 09..dave kil The Ohio Players cut is nice but Towanda voice is incredible !! I admit I like the female voices or the male vocal harmonies
Guest mel brat Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 (edited) The Ohio Players cut is nice but Towanda voice is incredible !! I admit I like the female voices or the male vocal harmonies Towanda Barnes aka Gloria Barnes. Back in 1974, some DJs who couldn't get hold of the A&M recording played "You Don't Mean It" from the Gloria Barnes LP on Maple - a different cut of the song by the very same singer! Incidently, I'm only aware of three albums on the Maple label (a subsidiary of All Platinum). All contain cover versions of songs which appear to be better than the original versions! Stefan Posted March 3, 2009 Author Posted March 3, 2009 Hmm, not working , I'll upload it later Tommy your track is nice ! Great funky edge ! Yes I know that Towanda Barnes is Gloria Barnes i've listened this Lp in mp3 poor quality but You don't mean it it's not the same version that this first cut by her ? The voice on Ohio Players is Definitively less good for me. Not the same intensity. Maple is a great label with the Lee Moses jewel "Time & Place" and Gloria Lp . I never heard others . I believe there's a Chosen Few Lp but i've never listened .

Guest Trevski Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 Not on my sales, but I have a M- W/D of YDMI for £80. It's a beauty.
Rich B Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 Not on my sales, but I have a M- W/D of YDMI for £80. It's a beauty. Towanda on A & M is without doubt the best vesion. As I recall the LP (in '74) was always much harder to find (it's worth finding though) and you only played the Ohio Players if you couldn't get Towanda! Once upon a time the brown issue was just unheard of, but the wdj does look nice. It was also re-issued in '75 on the silver A & M with the letters as large as the label. I run out of puff long before the end of it these days! Regards, RB

Ian llevine first played it from the album and he reviewrd it in Black Echoes
Guest mel brat Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 Ian levine first played it from the album and he reviewed it in Black Echoes Really? I didn't know that. I only ever heard Colin play the 7" on A&M. (I think you must mean 'Black MUSIC' mag., as 'Black Echoes' wasn't launched until 1976 - almost two years after Towanda Barnes was first played.)
Guest mel brat Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 (edited) Check ebay for item Number - 400013996003 What do you think of that for an asking price!!.. Yes, I've seen some truly ludicrous prices asked by Continental sellers recently, particularly in France and Italy. What's all that about? Do folk actually PAY these prices over there, or is it a scam? Edited March 3, 2009 by mel brat
Jim G Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Really? I didn't know that. I only ever heard Colin play the 7" on A&M. Yep, Black Music!! it is in my loft I will dig it out

Guest mel brat Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 (edited) the album version is the one they used for the grapevine release Really? Well I never! I didn't know that either. It's not half as exciting and dynamic as the A&M version though IMO. Edited March 4, 2009 by mel brat
Rich B Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 anyone confirm that the brown issue of YDMI is styrene too? The one I had was. RB
Tommy1 Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 The one I had was. RB All of them are, never seen a vinyl of this before
Guest mel brat Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 All of them are, never seen a vinyl of this before Vinyl issues are certainly possible though, as Jeanette White's "Music" are vinyl aren't they?
Rich B Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 Vinyl issues are certainly possible though, as Jeanette White's "Music" are vinyl aren't they? There are vinyl and styrene Jeanette Whites, as is the case with a lot of A & M releases. That said, never seen a vinyl 'YDMI' though. best, RB
