ZapatootheTiger Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 Good to meet and have a chat Dave (birder66), thanks for coming over and seeking me out Posted also on Trojan / Pama / Chatty Mouth I can't say how good this "do" was, since I've never been to one before and have nowt to compare it with, but there were certainly some great Ska, Rocksteady and reggae tunes dropped - nothing after about 1971 nor before about 1962. Musically, the evening was warmed up by someone I never caught the name of and then Richie. Bob Brooks MCed the main "Penny vs. Tommy" event. I recognised more tunes from both than I expected - Penny's were the more familiar to these ears, with CONGO WAR among the ones I knew getting a welcome airing and a few of Tommy's were irritatingly familiar. However, Tommy dropped an absolute belting, bass-heavy Caltone killer that I didn't know - got the floor going and about 20 minutes later, Penny tossed in an early '69 Studio One tune that floored me with its rhythm and vocal harmonies (didn't do much for Pilot though!). ...and one of them played an excellent Jackie Mittoo version of Dave 'baby' Cortez's HAPPY ORGAN. 'nuff other tunes I knew/had, but couldn't place. No "chin strokers" either. Great to catch up with a few known faces and brilliant to meet some new ones - 3 or 4 lads came up and introduced themselves to me saying they recognised me from my forum picture. Not bad, as it's almots 5 years old! The place was almost full - enough to have to say "excuse me" to move around, but not so full that you couldn't move at all. A great night let down only by the variation of sound quality, some tunes sound too lightweight (not enough bass) and occasional bouts of feedback. Some argued that the music wasn't loud enough. Respect and good wishes and apologies to any I've forgotten to (in alphabetical order):Ash (Aquarius) Ben (Benj 43) Dave Home Dave Mack (Birder66) Gordon (DJ Greedy G) Hugh (Conscoius Pilot) and Marianda Ian (Mrs. Trellis) Matt (BBR / bigboyrock) Matt (Bedward) Matt (Matty-j) Mikey (Mento Man / Big Mikey Dread) - hope you get sorted work-wise soon enough Nick (skanick) Paul (Port-O-Jam) Penny Reel Peter Levy Phil (Enthucol) Rey (lankou2) Ringo Richie (aka Richie) Steve (stevethehat) Steve Rice (kid bingo) Tim (timp) Toby (MSE / Mr. Swing easy)Chris Lane, Dave Hendley, Asher D were also there and I'd hoped to catch Commander K, but never did (someone was going to introduce us, but I/he forgot) ...pictures to follow.
ZapatootheTiger Posted February 28, 2009 Author Posted February 28, 2009 Some selected pictures...I took a few more. Penny (pondering the re-press that Tommy's playing) and Tommy Bob Brooks What's Steve Rice (right) telling Peter Levy? Phil "Please buy some tunes" Etgart Tim P "in the zone" Ash struck lucky Gordy and Mikey
Birder66 Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 Some selected pictures...I took a few more. Penny (pondering the re-press that Tommy's playing) and Tommy Ha! That was his RINGO on red wax - killer!! The difference in sound was that Penny played UK's and Tommy played JA's - the UK's were crippled everytime, which is why collecting UK's to play out is a fool's game. Is Ash on here? I lost his contact no from 2 years back - was great to see him again. That rocksteady tune with the China man singing (can't recall the title) was unreal - it's on Sunshine, as I recall. KILLER. So nice to hear a set based on so many rocksteady tunes - no need to have blistering TOP DECK action. Let the riddim do it's business and get evryone rocking. Tommy's intro tune blew my mind. Not heard it for a few years and don;t know what it is (It's rocksteady time) Great to meet you - it was me who had to introduce you to Commander K. Sorry - got carried away!
ZapatootheTiger Posted February 28, 2009 Author Posted February 28, 2009 I posted the rest of the pictures I took in the similar topic on Trojan... https://www.trojanrecords.co.uk/forum/viewt...p?p=58320#58320 I prefer Ska over Rocksteady almost any day, so a few Top deck "blisterers" wouldn't have gone amiss with me. If you mean young Ash from Slough (in one of the pictures above), of course he was there. He posts as Aquarius on Pama and simpleton on Chatty Mouth: https://z7.invisionfree.com/PAMA_FORUM/index.php?showforum=23 Ash also apologised for not introducing Commandewr K (Ralf) !!! Hope you had a decent journey home - my 30 miles across London still took the thick end of 2 hours (I dropped Gordon off, more or less on the way)
Guest Lord GrabAndFlee Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 Is Tommy's hat signed by Prince Buster?
ZapatootheTiger Posted March 12, 2009 Author Posted March 12, 2009 I expanded the IE page to 400% and still can't make out the signature...
