Mike Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Interesting choice of the first single from one of the more rememorable recent american idol contestants - cover of Shrine side Its Your Love the flip of Dream My Heart by Shirley Edwards Havent compared it , but seems to be doing well " Coming Back to You has sold approximately 20,000 copies in its first two weeks, and Melinda's remake of the old Northern Soul song It's Your Love currently is receiving airplay on AC stations across the country"

I can't think of one.

Ted Massey Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 I might be committing heracy here but i think its a better version or at least as good and i have the SE record, the version seems to be almost true to the original imo
Jaco Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 has a pop singer ever covered a more obscure record? I can't think of one. It would be interesting to find out how the song became known to the artist/producer and how they came to choose it. Blindingly obscure outside of these circles, you would imagine.
Rob Wigley Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Has she any conections into the Shrine set up ? maybe grand daughter of Shirley Edwards or one of the Shrine extended family ? Good version and well spotted Mike Rob
KevH Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Soul music rip???.Dont think so....................like it.
Guest Byrney Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Has she any conections into the Shrine set up ? maybe grand daughter of Shirley Edwards or one of the Shrine extended family ? Good version and well spotted Mike Rob On this live clip at a CD signing, around 57 seconds she points to a guy who has picked out the songs for her, didn't catch the name though. Shrine being covered by Pop idols star - uncanny! I hope it sells shed loads for her. ">

Blindingly obscure outside of these circles, you would imagine. even blindingly obscure in these circles! I found some article with a vague reference to it: https://blogs.usatoday.com/idolchatter/2009...th-melinda.html doesn't look like she has any real connection to the original record either.
Roger Williams Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Blindingly obscure outside of these circles, you would imagine. Oh I dunno Jaco, America's a big ole country and I'm sure there are one or two people dotted around the place with a knowledge of old soul music! Really good to see Melinda Doolittle being discussed on here, she's the real deal for me and I couldn't have been more pleased to see someone who, aside from Latoya London, has been my favourite American Idol contestant, release a genuine soul album instead of a crappy r&b load of pop shite as so many of the others have done. Posted this on EMS a few times since it was first broadcast, it still blows me away every single time: ">

Posted this on EMS a few times since it was first broadcast, it still blows me away every single time: Yeah, I know what you mean and by "these circles" I would include our friends across the pond. I am genuinely fascinated to know how such a record ends up being picked by a potential mainstream artist (who incidentally should have won the competition in the first place).Maybe it's not that much of a stretch given the Shrine mystique, but somebody, somewhere knew the track sufficiently well to put it forward. In the article boba posted she says that she has heard " a demo version" of the song - what does she mean by " a demo version" in this context? Either way it is an excellent track and one that will ensure that she gets off to a great start as a solo singer (I hope).
