nsoul2 Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 The Black Ensemble Theater in Chicago have a production running during the weekend of the soul trip Entitled "I Gotcha The story of Joe Tex and the Soul Clan", there is a matinee Sunday 8th March which may be of interest. Details can be found on the net, including reviews. The venue is about 5 miles north of the hotel, and entrance is $45. Theatre is not cheap in the states Will be in Chicago from 1 st March myself and back on the 6th so only attending the first 2 nights at the hotel, and will miss the play myself, as the company only perform weekends, but sounds interesting

I've seen two productions by them over the years. One was entitled "Du Wap" which was a sort of musical revue looking back over the 50's group scene with particular attention to Chicago groups with the backing band lead by Tom Tom Washington. Another in 2001 was "The Jackie Wilson Story". This was absolutely fantastic, very different to the one that played over here in the '80.s. It was really accurate with people playing stars like Barbara Acklin etc and again with a great small orchestra. A photo in the foyer was the cast with Jerry Butler 2 days before we went - damn !!! I was on their mailing list and they have done tons of mouth watering soul related productions since John Marriott.

Myself and about 5 friends traveled up to see it on my Birthday only to find it was sold out when we got there but down to some smooth banter from my good friend Billy Snow he got them to let us in but not only that we got front row seats and wept tears of emotion to what must be the most moving and fun production i have ever seen live or on TV,the only down side was when it came to the end and we had to leave a beautifull place full of loving people who made us feel really welcome and could not believe how we had come to be in the Black Ensemble Theatre but the Highlight for me must be when the entire cast asked me to stand up and then sang happy birthday to me to the backing of Stevie Wonders happy birthday thanks again and if anyone is going to chicago in the next 10 days go and have a look its fantastic all the best Yocky.
