Working title is "Keep On Burning", no doubt inspired by The Torch! I was first approached by the production company 18 months ago but nothing came of it at the time. However, now its serious and filming will start in March. It's a documentary about the history of the music and the scene and what sets it apart is that they have already licensed the entire This England programme from ITN and they have an agreement in place for the Hullaballoo footage. Of course, there will be the usual talking-heads but to ring the changes we have already interviewed Vicki Wickham and Marc Almond is in the studio on Wednesday. We'd also like to film the closing stages of the DO I LOVE YOU auction with John's kind permission. The interviews will be filmed at the Granada studios in Leeds, in March and at venue yet to be found in London. I'd like a moody, atmospheric cellar bar in London, has anyone got any ideas? I wanted something like The Scene club, I'll call my old mate Norman Jopling, he'll have a few ideas. In fact Norman is someone who we'll interview about the roots of the scene. I hear what what's being said about "who needs yet another film, yawn yawn" and I kind of agree. But, I do think there is a genuine opportunity to get it right and it could be great. In actual fact there really aren't that many sell-through DVD's out there. We can all admire Ian's dedication but not everyone wants to sit through 6 DVD's worth. If it can be told, and told well, in one and half hours with plenty of footage of young people and a great sound track its a winner. Besides, who doesn't want to see Chubby Checker singing At The Discotheque etc etc

She was responsible for bringing over the Motown acts and the likes of Major Lance long before anyone had thought about labeling Soul as Northern. She ties in nicely with the roots of the scene and with Norman Jopling's Record Mirror column, together they introduced the youth of Britain to black American music.

Guest Soultown andy Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 (edited) Dvds of authentic footage of artists are great,but these films are nonsense and leave the scene open to ridicule by those who dont and never will understand it.I was approached last year by someone who wanted to come to middleton to film for a short documentary,and turned them down flat.The soul scene belongs in the niters clubs weekenders,to be enjoyed by those who support it and not to be cashed in on by those that will never understand it. She was a TV producer who had the first Motown tour of the UK on the show she produced, but she had absolutely nothing at all to do with them coming to England. That was down to Dave Godin and Berry Gordy. I presume you have heard of Dave Godin ?

Thanks Pete, appreciate your support. I've been a close friend of Norm for many years and he's helped out on many of my projects. He's also helping me mate Neil Rushton with his forthcoming book. His Record Mirror archive is incredible and he's got some great photos too which I'm sure will be of interest to everyone.

The film, if not a wind up, will still be made, whether we have any input or not. If you contribute and it is not a true reflection, then you have a right to criticise. If you do not contribute and it is crap, you really can't complain, because you had a chance to make it authentic/true reflection and chose not to. If the guy is sincere about making the movie, I wonder what he thinks of the people on the Northern Soul scene from the replies he has received? The funny thing is, if he went to a venue and asked the same questions, most of you would bend over backwards to help him.
