Steve G Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 Just remembered another absolute sh**e record played. Unfortunately it was at the Casino (I say that cos it wasn't just the Casino that strayed from soul, 'David & The Giants' at the Mecca!). Anyway, the record was played by John Vincent. He announced it as 'Soul A Go Go' by Bob Wilson (Strings A Go Go, i.e Double Cookin had been huge then). It was a cover up of 'Chase Side Shoot Up' by Brian Bennet on UK Fontana records. link John has certainly played his share of turkeys over the years.
Soulsmith Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 I don't think TMWHS ever got played anywhere apart from local youth clubs. If you listen to it, it's a fantastic 60's pop song, not northern, one of my favourites. "Stop" is great as well, miles better than the original slow version. He Knows How To Love Me is good as well. link I think you maybe right there Pete. And if so it was probably me playing it. Aah the good old YC days. My top record at the time was Lesley Dawson* - Run For Shelter. Which I paid £15 for, and according to Record Collector.....its still worth £15. Consistency is often over rated. Col. Lesley Dawson was a girl and not that fat comedian blokey. That would have been embarrassing.
Pete S Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 That's great that Lesley Dawson. Alan Rhodes spin at Wigan. Written by Paul Anka. "Come on now - run for shelter, run for shelter"
Guest dkd Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 I've always hated Judy Street's 'What' but I know one or two people love it to death. Wimpy or what? Eddie link Eddie - you must be nuts - this little beauty is the one that got me stated in the whole Soul businees - once the wife insisted I loaded in onto my jukebox. Dave
lisahurley Posted May 22, 2005 Posted May 22, 2005 Groovin' with Mr Blow - Mr Blow. Has anyone ever played that? I've only ever heard it in the indie clubs. Talk about guilty pleasure, it's funny when you love something even though you know it's awful. Maybe I should've put it in the pop records thread

Talk about guilty pleasure, it's funny when you love something even though you know it's awful. Maybe I should've put it in the pop records thread link Can't say I've ever heard it played out. One thats been mentioned on another list recently and deserves a place right up there near the top is Mike And Ray - If Only You Knew :graywanker:

Guest Posted May 22, 2005 Posted May 22, 2005 Gary Lewis - My Heart's Symphony has got to be the worst ever Well then again there's Nosno King Goodbyr nothing to say and what about that Tim Tam and the Turn ons? A current one for me is Soul Walking where he can't reach the notes at the end and sings out of key, it's like scraping your fingers down a blackboard

Stevecee Posted May 22, 2005 Posted May 22, 2005 (edited) I don't think TMWHS ever got played anywhere apart from local youth clubs. If you listen to it, it's a fantastic 60's pop song, not northern, one of my favourites. . link Yeah I agree Smiffy although Steve Jeffries covered it as Florence Devoree and it reached 'massive' status at Abingdon in 78 it was really more of a Youth club tune, much like Sandi Shaw, Petula Clark, etc Cheers Steve Edited May 22, 2005 by SteveCee
Stevecee Posted May 22, 2005 Posted May 22, 2005 Blimey I've just rec'd a Wigan tape from 78 and Dickie plays probably the worst record I have ever heard. I think he says it the Cameros It starts off as Dum dum, dummy do dar be doobie, dum dum dummy do dar be doobie, I want , want you to knnoooow, how much I need you soooo Wasn't this some awful pop hit? I might have to post a clip to him to play on Smooth FM, saying explain this Still I guess a few bad tracks amongst all the great ones he played he can be forgiven But seriously it is awful awful ......... Cheers Steve
Pete S Posted May 22, 2005 Posted May 22, 2005 There's a record called We're Not Too Young by this group I think

Guest rachel Posted May 22, 2005 Posted May 22, 2005 There's a record called We're Not Too Young by this group I think link Heard this out quite a bit recently... got a couple of other versions here, Continental Showstoppers and another female vocalist that I can't remember.

Talk about guilty pleasure, it's funny when you love something even though you know it's awful. Maybe I should've put it in the pop records thread link I am guilty of playing Grooving with Mr Bloe by Mr Bloe, only 3 weeks ago at a club night in East London as part of my warm up set . As a newcomer to the 'scene' I use the method 'if its a good record play it' and accordingly confess to a soft spot for this (albeit a bit cheesey) piece of vinyl. My nomination would be Ten Miles High by David and the Giants. Dave

I'm curious to know if it's ever been played in Northern clubs.... link Walls of Heartache in Walthamstow - as I am involved with the night I won't go on about it here, but feel free to contact me or check the events section to know more. I will say the dancefloor didnt exactly flood when it went on, although it was avery early play. Apologies i've just seen its not actually listed on my set list (by error and not intent), but it was played. Dave

I don't clearly recall hearing it at a major venue, but hey, it was 30 years ago! link forgot say I bought for 50p, in Bishop Auckland record shop in '73. It was the album 'Groovin with Mr Bloe'. Same resord shop was full of gems. Jackie Edwards. Platters, etc all 25p to 50p gems (sorry off topic!) Also, have thought of other bad records, like , 'Lets Spend the Night Together' (instr), the Rolling Stones song. I last heard that played by Soul Sam at the Pendulum, Manchester.
Paul R Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 The B side of the GWMB DJM single is pretty good from what I remember, if you like instrumentals. Paul
Guest Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 (edited) Almost forgot-"I'm gonna pick up my toys(and go home)"-The Devonnes. A song that has made ME "pick up my holdall and go home"!!! Pure shite. ..and what bollox, "Groovin' with Mr Bloe" was never that bad was it. It, along with "Ghost in my house" et al' where the first records new comers to the scene would have bought. I think we tend to forget records that were undoubtedly big at one time in favour of obscure "b" sides, granted they'd never get played at any big time venue now due to being played out, but that does'nt constitute a bad record does it?.I can recall at a record fair many moons ago how a young lad (barely 16 if a day) was browsing discs at a Northern dealer and produced a list ,neatly typed out of his collection. The dealer/colleagues/buyers laughed the wee lad outta the hall. I bought nowt off him after that in disgust. Such is the snobbery and elitism of the Northern scene. Edited May 24, 2005 by Zeb

Nearly as good as the old soul classic played around the same time, mid 73, "Judy In Disguise" by Offenbach! Paul
Ernie Andrews Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 Ive said this before- F****king Police Story- What utter shite!

Guest martyn Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 'Love Hustle' must be in there somewhere along with 'Cowboys to Girls'.....Must admit to dancing to them at the time though As a previous poster said "our tastes have matured".

Paul link Yes, "Sinful" (as it is called) is a very northern (in that cheesy kinda way) sounding instrumental, perfect beat, breaks, the lot. How do I know? I used to have a Spanish release where the title was "pecaminoso" instead of "sinful", and I actually thought it was rather good, at one point. I played it to some people and they also thought it was good! It went well together with Frankie Valli "You're Ready Now" and R. Dean Taylor "Ghost In My House"... Edited June 1, 2005 by Guest
