Benji
Was wondering if somebody can help me to identify two tunes. I have both on audio tape only and are recordings of the radio shows during the Great Yarmouth Northern Soul Weekender 1990. I think the DJ on the Radio was Rob Marriott but am not too sure about that. Anyway, the tunes are: 1) Heartstoppers feat. Betty Baker - My man sure is real. Might be a cover up I dunno. earthy, funky late 60s/early 70s dancer with some mean horns (hope this makes sense, I'm not used to that funky slang of todays hip youths). 2) Detroit Soul - my darling please. Pretty sure this is a cover up. Midtempo dancer. The horns suggest a Carolina beach blue eyed combo and the singer is a bit lightweight, Real title might be "please leave me" or "please give me". Checked Refosoul for both titles but didn't find anything. Will try to upload sound clips soon TIA Benji Link to comment Social source share
Benji
Here's a mp3 file taken from the tape with both tracks, first one is "the heartstoppers" then "detroit soul" (at about 02:35 into the file) Any help in identifying either song much appreciated! Benji
THANKS A LOT FOR YOUR HELP GUYS. I KNEW YOU'D HELP ME. CHEERS! Just to recollect: 1) Judy Stokes - A real man - Soul Power 2) Little Curtis and the Blues - Please keep me - Vanco Anyone with current prices for them? I take it both are very hard to find, aren't they? Link to comment Social source share
George G
2) Little Curtis and the Blues - Please keep me - Vanco Anyone with current prices for them? I take it both are very hard to find, aren't they? This record is from my current home area, the Pacific NW, specifically the Portland, OR area. It turns up occasionally, but still rather rare. I've seen/heard of 10-12 copies changing hands in the past half dozen years. Be warned it's a styrene and almost every copy plays with at least a hint of noise, some worse. The other side "Soul Desire" is funkier and collected by that scene. Vanco released a lot of records, 75% are bad country (and a few are good country). I think it sells in the $300-$400 area, a clean looking and playing copy could go $500+. I just played it again and it sounds better than I remembered, I'll have to stick in my play box..... Baz Atkinson
Rob was the man. For me, he was better than Butch. Great times indeed! The best,we called him mr philly,he was immersed in the philly sound, loved the north east lads particulary Kev Kane, thnk we used to let him get away with murder,ie a normal sleep over at AL Coeys would turn into a week lol, would be nice to roll back the years Joan and actually pinpoint every disc he turned up,think that would put the cat among the pigeons in rare soul circles. jocko
Sorry for going of topic but what happened to Rob? why did he pack it in? what happened to his collection etc. LIke lots of people from back then I assume he just got fed up going out every week as the quality of the music and the do's diminished rapidly as the 90's drew in, whatever reason he deserves his place in the NS DJ Hall Of Fame if there is such a thing, as he was around when it was harder to do it the right way (for me) and played more relative unknowns in his time at top of tree than many other more revered names. Whatever he was also a top bloke, hats off to him, seen him a few years back and he was as funny and as much a top bloke as ever. Sold all his records, so vultures can stand down. Jumpinjoan
Rob used to get slaughtered for playing records such as the one's mentioned in this thread, along with others like the Trannels and the Hyperions. (and we all know how huge those two records went on to become). Whenever I think back to Rob's heyday, I can't help thinking thank God there was no Soul Source. Jeez, can you imagine the frenzy in Lookbacks - he plays a record that completely clears the floor at a venue, only to play the exact same record again later on in his spot. Jumpinjoan
I just thank God Rob had faith in his records and the guts to continue playing them week after week, despite getting slagged off and clearing the floor. You only have to look at how huge records like the Trannels and the Hyperions went on to become to realise he was right. Those were exciting times. Never to be repeated I am sad to say.
