Most of us like to think we know a bit about soul, and I know lots of folk who say "Oh yeh, I knew/know that" when they obviously didn't, just don't want to seem thick, but I honestly didn't know this, and I just thought, "well, that's a new one to me!"

Always thought Otis Redding's "Try a little tenderness" was the original, 'til I got a Sinatra album yesterday, and he did it in the early '50's! never heard it!

Then again, I was playing Kyu Sakamoto "Ue o muite arukō" ("I look up when I walk") released here as "Sukiyaki" and someone said, "Is that a cover of Jewel Akens!

Point is, If you don't know, it's not stupid to admit it!

(I actually prefer Kyu Sakamoto to Jewel Akens, but thats a different story!)

Anyone else got any "I didn't know that" info they'd like to own up to!

I know, but I don't mean obscure stuff, rather things that seem so bleedin' obvious when you find out, you can't believe you didn't know years ago!

I've got one, i heard The Valentinos version of 'Looking for a Love' the other day and i'd always assumed Bobby Womack had recorded it much later solo and it wasn't already a much earlier song with The Valentinos. 'I never knew that!'

I think i'll play it tomorrow night

My gran was a massive Sinatra fan , when I was growing up , early 70's , Tenderness was her favourite track , I always loved the lyrics but always thought it needed more oomph !!!

Cue hearing Otis's version at 10 yrs and my destiny of life was doomed from then on !!!!!!!!

I didnt relaise when I told people I was ravishing it didnt mean I was hungry! got some funny looks every time I said it!

Nor did I realise when someone told me at an event I was running years ago that I had street cred they didnt mean a record... I replyed " god I dont know what we have, Kevin has all the record info!!!! shameful...

The only thing I've ever been sure of is - never eat yellow snow.

i learned here that the sweethearts "eddie my love" is a cover of the teen queens on rpm, a 50s record. Doing my radio show several times I have played a record that the doowop DJ before me pointed out was a cover of a doowop record.

I never knew Yvonne Vernee was lead singer wit' T' Elgins 'til I was told!

or Tommy Tate was Tommy of Tommy & The Derby's

or Baby Love was the first British Motown number 1

A few years back someone I worked with asked me the same thing and I first thought it was her, but doing some checking up myself, can confirm, Debbie Dean was the first white person, her first release was "Don't let him shop around" / "A new girl" on Motown 1007 in September 1961.

(This song was of course the answer song to the big hit by the Miracles "Shop around")

I knew Otis' wasn't the original version of "Try A Little Tenderness" - but I never knew that the jazz/funk classic "Spain" by Al Jarreau was a vocal version of "Concierto de Aranjuez" by Joaqu­n Rodrigo until I saw the film "Brassed Off" !

brassed off one of my favorite films a lot of it was filmed on our estate and the pub across the road from our house which you can see several times in the film

I didn't know, until I went to see Jersey Boys last year, that 'Bye Bye Baby (Baby Goodbye)' which I had loved as a 7 year old at the height of Rollermania in 1975, was originally by The Four Seasons. Everyone else there knew except me...

She wasn't, Saundra Edwards was. Yvonne Vernee was singer with the Donays.
