"Don Varner new CD Album titled "Finally Go Over!" on the UK Label SHOUT!

will be released on May 30th 2005. It is also already available online

for pre-ordering...

Here are some clips of announcements about the upcoming release:

This series represents RPMs foray into what In The Basement magazine

calls Real Soul and R&B, primarily from the 60s, but with some crossover

into the '50s and '70s.

SHOUT! was chosen as an imprint name from its connotations with the

Isley's hit, also the Shout label subsidiary of Bert Berns Bang label,

and last but not least because label co-chief Clive Richardson used to

publish a Soul magazine in the '70s called...Shout. The logo design is

somewhere between the original Shout and Minit label designs.

You can reach us at:

Shout Records, P.O.Box 49215, London SE12 9XF.

Hi Mike, I do buy a fair few cd's so have been meaning to dig out at home for reviews, assume you mean those with Northern/70'sd connection rather than brand new, although will try and dig out a few that I think may be of interest.

The most obvious recent ones are Grapevines recent output, very consistent and diferrent,

Ones from last few months

Phillip Mitchells 2nd one of all unissued stuff - very good cd although have to be honest and say not as good as first, a couple of tracks where think he is holding back vocally, probably more selling the song, and to be fair there is reference to this on notes, however 3 or 4 tracks that would sound great out now in one of those tenty things, and a great version of Hurt So Good where he erally leans into it on one of my favorite songs. Not life affirming but definitely essential!

Cicero Blake cd - a fantastic journey though the career of a very competent singer, some early soul which I quite like in this and it shows very well how his voice developed through the years, couple of cracking ballads and 2 great dancers unknown to me, all (?) issued stuff but still great, couple of more recent bluesy things at end that may put some of the more traditionalists off but still in the essential category.

Most Wanted Vol 2 - compilation of Malaco stuff, have to be honest and say dissapointed on first listen to this but think that was because of how good vol 1 was, some great 70's dancers up to some more recent stuff including 2 great numbers done in last few years (Vick Allen and Antonuique (?), both off great y2k cd's) Again a nmber of unnissued stuff that makes this worth buying, particularly the opening number Anita Dobbins (?) which has strange vocals but I think would sound outstanding on a big system, have to be honest and say there are a few on here which I think plod along but given price and the 4 or 5 must have tracks along with the unissued stuff on it means its well worth a punt!

Can add some more if people interested, as said will dig out a few new release cd's that may have tracks of interest when I get home.

Cheers

Jock

Of the new choons that have potential to 'cross over' from the modern to northern dancefloors, I'd say the track 'Move Into Your Season by Darien Keith Horn (from CD Baby.com) is a pretty likely candidate, very 'Step In The Name Of Love' but miles better - currently large for the proper modern soul DJs. I'm sure Soul Sam will pick up on it next year or the year after. :wicked:

The new Ron Henderson comp on Grapevine is essential as well, imvho.

Cheers

Like a lot of these tunes, Mike, the venue sound systems do them far more justice than computer speakers.

Fri 13/5/05 Lowtn Modern Room playlist as requested:

Maysa - The Bottle (remix) - remix of her wonderful uptempo version of the Gil Scot Heron calssic from the US version of her 'All My Life' CD

Pasadenas - Round & Round - their best (imo) from 1995

JTQ feat. Alison Limerick - Stepping Into My Life - classic 90s modern

Raw Stylus - Change - same uptempo vein as JTQ

Time & Space - Need Your Love Once More - bit of a scarce album track feat. Roy Ayers - uptempo and jazzy and well catchy - got a lot of enquiries about this

Shakatak - Say What You Want - seriously!! More uptempo quality male vocal jazziness, none of yer 'Nightbirds' crap

Kloud 9 - track off the new album - not one for hiding track names but the label owner asked me not to say what it was for impending copyright reasons but will surprise a few people who know this group's work and one you WON'T be hearing Mr. Searling play (too lively!!)

Rasmus Faber & Melo - Get Over Here - soulful house, best one of it's kind for me this year

Jaya - Skind-le-le - obscure uptempo CD track from around 2000

Usher - It Is What It Is - one of the soul tunes of 2005 - best thing he's ever done

Angela Johnson - Whatever It Takes - jazzy uptempo from her forthcoming UK album on dome

Bah Samba - Let The Drums Speak - featuring Fatback, from their latest set - big Caister tune apparently

Andre De Lang - Don't Stop Believing - all time classic late 90s tune

Cheers
