The Lovely Smell Of Our Beloved Records

Recommended Posts

Do you guys also like the smell of your records in the morning? I know I do... I think the smell is an often undervalued part of a record collection. And the smell is also one of the strongest senses that are linked with association. In quite a few cases I can tell just by their smell which package a certain record was in when I received it.

I sometimes also catch myself sniffing my records, and in my opinion the ones in their brown paper sleeves are the best to sniff (and company sleeves are ok too). Any other members on here do this too? Or do I need some professional help or join 45ists anonymous?

Of course there's a downside to everything, and in this case it's the records that have that cigarette smell or things like that. The worst example of this is a package I got from Italy a few years back. The records were nice/in the condition described etc, but they honestly smelled like they had been lying next to a dead whale for the better part of a month. The smell was absolutely unbearable. It got better over time, but when I'm browsing through my records I can sometimes still grasp a whiff that takes me back to the moment I opened that package, and trust me, there's better moments to remember than that one.

Btw: I opened the package while in hospital, cause myparents were kind enough to take the new arrivals with them for me to open 'em. After I opened 'the package of death' I was afraid some nurses would be running into the room, thinking a remarkably vile epidemic of gangreen just broke out in my room. I left the hospital soon after that but I pity the patient that came in after me

C'mon lads, this forum does deserve a thread about the smell of our 45s. Feel free to contribute, and if you ever feel like you're taking the record collecting too far remember there's always guys like me that are even more pathetic

I'm not sure there are professionals out there qualified to help, Digger, sounds serious mate !

I used to get really bad sneezing fits in some warehouses in the States and tend to back off, dust and that, i like the smell of those clear plastic sleeves though..

Do you prefer a fresh minter or a well used VG-?

Do they smell different?

Tricky question... I guess they both have their merits. I like to smell the life a VG- record has led, but I slightly prefer mint warehouse find 45s. And yes, they do smell different.

dogstoat, I'm off now to get wasted and might be doing so throughout he weekend, so it's perfectly possible to go out, have fun and then have a few vinyl sniffs just before I go to bed (yes I always try to keep a small pile near my bed just in case ph34r.gif )

Old American green sleeves, now they do smell nice if you get a load of them in the same room. I must admit I do sometimes find myself with my nose pressed firmly against the contents of my record shelves now & again.

I remember walking into an old record storage place once in L.A. Just got through the door & the fella said "hi, can I help you?" Just at that second the smell hit me as I was just starting to say "Have you got any? errrm, have yooooooou got any???..... unsure.gif " the fella blurts out "NORTHERN SOUL !! Your a Brit !!" At that second I looked to my right & there they were, must have been about 5000 old empty green sleeves :shades: "errrrm Northern Soul ?? no....can't stand the stuff, I collect Surf music....how much are those green sleeves, please".

Well, the smell of vinyl has always been a key ingredient of the attraction.

On a crate-digging trip with a mate in late 2007, I would quite often be driving down a road in Buttf*ck, Nowhere USA when I would suddenly slam the brakes on, stop completely and look at my mate with a slightly crazed look on my face and say, "didja smell that"?

And he say "what"?

And I'd say "I can smell vinyl".......

And sure enough, we'd find a store with vinyl almost immediately.

Unfortunately, I owe these skills to Simon Soussan who would do exactly the same moves whilst we were driving in the middle of nowhere......

Simon Soussan: "Uggggh. Did you smell that baby boy? My sinuses are unblocking! Zere is vinyl nearby........."

And he was never wrong.

The sense of smell is not to be sniffed at!

Well. I've seen some porn sites in my time, but really...

Seriously though, what really takes me back is the smell of that (so-called) "Record Cleaning Fluid" that we clogged up our Reggae and Tamla Motown records with C.1970/71. I still had a few Trojan things that hadn't been scrubbed and the smell was just SO evocative! Ahhhh!

I dropped my record cleaning fluid a few weeks ago, which caused the bottle to break and for a few days it was absolutely impossible to enter the room without getting a very chemical type of high, followed by a very nasty headache. Made me decide to just hang on to my record sniffing habit instead of moving on to something stronger :)

I run a group that may be of use to you VSA (Vinyl Sniffers Anonymous :lol: ): pm me and I can help to prevent the temptation by taking your records and storing them in a safe place (my house) :)

I've done it too.

Here in Mexico City every record shop or flea market dealer has his own smell...

I don't know if I'm the only one, but a smell I'll never forget is Bob May's house, records, and probably body odour (didn't get that close). I went to Detroit shotly after his store closed down, so I went to his house diggin. It was a real mess, and that freaking smell came from everywhere. A blend of cigarrettes, dust and don't know what. :S It took several months to leave the records I bought off him. Even those little poem books he always gives had it...

I also ¿collect? used books. IMHO vinyl smell can't compare at all the the nice smell of a 60 year old book with yellowish pages. Worthless...

Cheers,

Dante
