Ollerton Miners Welfare closed its doors on saturday last week.

Its very sad when we lose such a fantastic venue.

The dancefloor was huge and the room upstairs coluld hold 700 comfortably

It had a HUGE dancefloor

We had Melvyn Davis perform there in Feb 2005

The Chad reports that the venue had become "insolvent"

Does it worry our other welfares in the notts area that they may be under the same threat or are they still running a thriving venue/welfare

Ciswo (coal industry social welfare organisation ) still own /run most of the welfares

I heard recently of a welfare up north ( forget the name) where they sold all the land with the provision the were provided with a new welfare and leisure facility on part of the plot of land.

The rest went to housing.

Our welfare had a large bowling green and football field behind also the welfare annexe (original welfare) still exisited there and the old boxing club.

None of these facilities were used in the last few years.

The downstairs of the old welfare was used for a youth club ( the one I attended whe I was growing up)

Was built to welcome the influx of Geordie and Scotch Miners in the late 5ts and early 6ts

spent many a night there and at Clipstone Welfare in my younger days.

What a Shame Maggies ideologies and policies killed the mines and the communities built around them,

and many of them in this day and age being Members clubs, its very hard to keep up with the rates and maintenance costs,

to keep buildings and people usable,

smoking ban was one of the biggest downers and add cheaper booze and nothing for the younger families to have any direction towards

welfare life as communities and family life has disintegrated.

got to agree mate ,grimethorpe miners welfare closed last week ,was the home of the famous colliery band ..had a large concert room and we had several charity soul nights there and raised a lot of money for charity..

its a crying shame the football and cricket fields will go as well as the bowling greeens. this place used to be the heart of the community, the st johns ambulance brigade will lose there practice rooms also , if I were a bit younger I would deffo be considering emigrating this country has nothing to offer working class people and very little in the way of prospects for our young people

What I was trying to do is hilight the fact that welfares disappearing is becoming a reality

And for soul night organisers to be afraid...very afraid ...you never know whos gonna be next

Weve lost a couple of pubs in the village recently

I do blame expensive beer and the smoking ban ....what was wrong with smoke rooms (am aware someone has to work in the smokey atmosphere)?? they used to have em

Its about time the breweries took note that they arent getting people in the door and need to start doing something

Agree Mandy and having visited Edwinstowe welfare and seen how we are having to drag people in as the breweries are like chocolate fire guards and have there brains where there arses should be

will not help promote themselves.

I think the thing is that they never bother their arses to go out and look at the management teams who run these places

never advertise any events (as you say no promotion)

great venues (that we as a music genre) appreciate above most other groups

I mean most welfares have the cheapest beers around but you can't rely on that alone to pull in the punters

I could think of loads of stuff to do in venues like that to cater for whole communities

What a waste

Got the same problem at our place

Run by a committee and the rules state that as its a members club and I lease the room for the night

We are not allowed to advertise in the Press commercially and also the same goes for Flyering so we keep going with the help of the website and some falsification of words on the local radio station,

like its the old church we meet at not the name of the club we operate in

and also word of mouth.

we hope people keep coming back for the diversification and differing musical tastes

we play out.

eg one month acrossthe board most of the time with the odd oldies night(March with Ian Gee) for example

Sweetsoul old church on Kings rd Newark ng24 1ew for Sat Navs.

Same thing at Dinnington S25, welfare closed for years then managed to get a hold of

regeneration project with all aid and charities hence the Resource Centre - community based library, kindergarten etc etc

At least we got a venue and in the heart of the local community - it'll never be called the 'stute again but hey ho - owts better than nowt

Pubs are shutting down everywhere.I recently did a drive from Islington up to Harlesden and counted 9 tinned up pubs.Luxury flats no doubt or evangelical churches.

our local pub shut they flattened it and built a church in its place !!!!

I'm sure a few of you will remember Melvyn Davis on that stage and the fantastic floor it had

Very Sad sad.gif

A great day : Melvyn was in fine voice .

The photographs of OMW are a sad reflection of its' creditable past , and another closed chapter in relation to heritage .

Yes Rob, you are quite right ,it was such a fantastic venue it hosted some fantastic talent

theres a flyer on the ollerton of yesteryear site with a star studded line up

And I remember Melvin Davies was quite overwhelmed at the reaction of the crowd that day

Mand

And John those are rare pics of me and Gaz on the dancefloor together!thumbsup.gif

its a huge plot with the bowling greens, football pitch, car park, boxing club and old welfare all on the same site

Think its being mothballed ready for housing development there was a phone mast on the land lease was due to run out last year

So we might see some action this year some time ...I wont hold my breath tho

Saw Melvin D appear here in 2005. Sorry about the bad news. But (as Mandy says) places like this are becoming a thing of the past due to the smoking ban and high drinks prices. Villages need places like this though because it brings the local community together-it's somewhere for the locals to meet. Otherwise you'll get a town full of strangers where hardly anyone knows each other. Who wants that?

QoS,

This was the focal point for the vast majority of things community based

Rugby, Tug O War ,Darts Pool, Football , Bowling greens the big Easter weekend scrap LOL ph34r.gifJolly boys outings.Childrens & Oaps christmas parties and easter parties Gala days Jazz bands the list was endless

Womens section ( did all the panto's and other entertainment ) to raise money for the pit trips

Legendary pit trips to Skegness the whole village went!

We got pop crisps spending money for the kids and a great day out for the whole family ( this was some folks only day out of the year)

Not to mention they sorted problems out and looked after everyone.

Not surprised it's had an effect on those communities that have lost the facility sad.gif

Yes, Steve. Shame about Annesley-As you know, we had some great nights there (and a great alldayer) and some great memories. A lot of other great venues have gone the same way due to one reason or another. Memories are everything. Keep remembering the venues and they will never really die...

FIRSTLY SO SORRY TO READ ABOUT YOUR WELFARE HALL, (THATCHER'S LEGACY STILL AFFECTING THE MINERS EVEN NOW... F**KIN' HORRIBLE OLD BITCH) ranting_1.gif

I BOB ARMSTRONG, RUN ALONG, WITH HARRY CROSBY & JOHNTY DAVEN, EASINGTON MINERS WELFARE HALL IN EASINGTON COLLIERY, IN COUNTY DURHAM ( ANOTHER FORMER PIT VILLAGE ON THE NORTH EAST COAST, THIS IS THE PLACE THEY FILMED... BILLY ELLIOT & OUR FRIENDS IN THE NORTH, WHEN DANIEL GRAIG WAS A GEORDIE)..

GOT TO SAY THE COMMITTEE ARE BENDING OVER BACKWARDS TO HELP US OUT WHEN WE PUT OUR NITES ON.. EVERY SECOND SAT OF EVERY OTHER MONTH...

THEY GIVE US THE HALL FOR FREE & THE USE OF THEIR SOUND SYSTEM, ALL WE GOT TO DO IS PLUG OUR DECKS IN & THEY HAVE MADE EVEN MAD ANOTHER ROOM OUT OF THE OLD CLOAK ROOM, WHICH IS A ROOM IN IT'S SELF & JUST PAID TO HAVE IT EXTENDED, WHICH WE NOW USE AS A MODERN ROOM.. & ALSO THEY PRINT OUR FLYERS FOR US..

THE WELFARE HALL IS A CHARITABLE ORGANISATION SO IT HAS TO LOOK FOR FUNDS FOR ITS SELF, SO IN RETURN FOR THEIR GENEROSITY, WE AS SOUL NITE PROMOTORS

GIVE THEM THE DOOR TAKINGS (AFTER WE PAY THE DJ'S)

WE ONLY CHARGE £3.00 IN FOR TWO ROOMS OF SOUL, 7PM TILL 1AM, SO AS TO TEMPT AS MANY, TO EASINGTON WELFARE AS POSSIBLE.. WE HAVE EVEN BOOKED A BAND FOR MAY (CALLED, BIG IN THE NORTH EAST), THEY ARE A 13 PIECE BAND PLAYING CLASSIC NORTHERN, R&B , BRIGHTON BEACH AT A COST OF £2000, WE SHOULD BREAK EVEN ON THE BAND, SO HOPEFULLY THE BAR SALES WILL BE GOOD FOR THE NIGHT..

ITS A HUGE PLACE, SO TAKES SOME CARING FOR & I KNOW IT IS STRUGGLING TO SURVIVE, SO AS WITH OLLERTON, I FEAR FOR EASINGTON, BUT THEY ARE DETERMINED TO KEEP IT OPEN, SO TIME WILL TELL.....BUT BECAUSE EASINGTON IS NOT IN A TOWN OR CITY , BUT ON THE COAST, WE HAVE GOT TO TRY & TEMPT SOULIES TO MAKE EASINGTON THIER SOUL NITE, EVERY OTHER MONTH, BUT WITH PETROL GOING UP EVERY WEEK , ITS GONNA GET HARDER TO TEMPT THEM TO EASINGTON, COS THEY WILL STAY BASICALLY ON THE DOOR STEP..

KEEP THE FAITH & KEEP THE WELLIE.... (OPEN)

You lot should think yourselves lucky, our miners welfare was shut in 93/94 and the authorites left the gypsies to break in and trash it and never lifted a finger, as the governement just wanted to get rid of things as soon as possible.

As for the pubs, most of the breweries don't give a toss, they've been investing in other areas for donkey's years with the profit they made. Then whatever they make from pubs is a bonus. They sell their beer cheaper to the supermarkets, than tenants can buy it in.

As for the rest they make a quick buck then get out, just like Punch Taverns who own the leeses for most of M & B's old pubs.

They just don't care.
