This one is going out to you guys out there who profess to be into Real Soul but can only really get your heads around Sixties/Northern/uptempo sounds.

Can those who this applies to really class themselves as true Real Soul fans when they dismiss the deep soul / ballads element of our music.

The stompers crowd out there please prove me wrong & tell me they have artists like Bobby McClure, L V Johnson, McKinnley Mitchell, J Blackfoot, Tommy Tate etc in their collections

No I don't have any of those people in my collection, sorry.

I'm obviously not worthy enough to be on this site.

See you around :shades:

surley soul music is what YOU feel inside is soul. just because some people see it in differnt genres doesnt mean they dont have real soul in there bones i.e i find it difficult to find instrumentals soulful (unless they have killer sax breaks) but i wouldnt say to some one you dont like real soul :shades:

please define soul music for me then you can judge who has real soul in there bones thumbsup.gif

Sure,

I have Bobby Mclure (Peak of Love - great dancer), Tommy Tate (as Tommy Yates - Darling Something's Gotta Give - ace midtempo).

I also have loads of blue eyed / garagey and beach sounds - because I like them :shades:

On top of that I collect funk records, Film and TV themes, and have an enduring love of Manchester based guitar bands (Joy Division, The Fall, Buzzcocks, Magazine etc etc)

So I guess all in all I'm a bit too poluted and impure to "Profess to be into Real Soul"

Here comes the Master Race thumbsup.gif

I like the sound that the type of people you mention make. But I also spend a lot of time listening to Northern although not to the aberrations that get Northern a bad name. I'm talking here about stuff such as Paul Anka, Lorraine Silver etc. But I must admit that I'm as partial to the occasional bit of bad taste as the next man. It really goes down a treat sometimes.

There are times when ONLY Northern can satisy the soul: whether that sound is real soul or not. Bobby McClure knows about heartache, but JJ Barnes or Emmanel Laskey are a lot better at giving you a pounding heart and a dry mouth.

I like Sixties/Northern/uptempo sounds & deep soul / ballads. Not really heard too many people refer to themselves as 'true Real Soul fans' in fairness, but I know what you mean.

Anyone who likes the former, but not the latter is a rare beast first and foremost. They are not seeing all the colours of the spectrum. If however they did only like the former, bearing in mind the amount thats out there, that I think would be soul a plenty.

To much dodgy modern disco, that's the thing to steer clear of.

I've always had an eclectic taste for Northern soul and it's many varied styles.

At Northern venues, I invariably dance to any and every tune played.

I love DJ's who include notable tempo and rhythm changes within their set as opposed to successions of one speed only tunes.

A different tempo evokes an entirely different style of dance.

With regards to deep soul ballads, many can impel graceful, sweepin' Kelly/Estaire likened moves, as opposed to the short, sharp, speedgunned moves a full on stomper demands.

Kelly/Estaire type Northern dance moves?? Damn right!

Both are/were respected masters of dance....freestyle, imaginative, inventive dance, just like we, as 'Northern' dancers commonly display.

Does this qualify me as a true soulie and can I have a sticker to show my mum?

I just love music, I have done since I was a sprog.

classical, pop, rave, soul, northern, whatever turns me on.

When I was about 10yrs old there was a record played as a theme tune on a radio 2 program. ( i cant for the life of me remember the name of the guys show)I was bloody besotted with it ! so I sat down and wrote a letter to The "Record Boss at radio 2" and asked what it was. They sent me a lovely letter telling me it was SOUL COAXING by THE Biddu Orchestra. I got my mum to order it for me from the record shop.

I think that soul is in your soul...It dosent have to be by a soul artist...It just has to create a feeling within yourself, a bit like being in love...you know what it is...you just cant explain it.

That's your opinion. What do you base it on? and while we're on a roll, can you, or one of the remaining 99% enlighten me as to the definition of REAL SOUL ?(appropriately capitalised ).

I suddenly feel like an inadequate little schoolboy being told off for being in the wrong classroom.

With regards to your patronising statement, I know you will undoubtably find, the majority of members within this forum are into Northern soul, complete with all it's styles.

There again, If you must categorise this forum in order to render your own association within as elite, then please, ignore my rantings and carry on with your arrogant claims.

PS: I think you will find 99% of statistics are just plucked out of the air and used to try and validate spurrious claims. Right on real soul bro!

If your quote was, without intent, just an off the cuff remark and I've read too much into it, then I accept that.

We, like everyone in here, walk a similar path.

Can I get an Amen?

There is a real difference between 'Soul fan' & 'Northern soul' fan. You only have to listen to a spot played by Soul Sam & Mrs.Levine to tell the difference. A Northern soul DJ's motto is 'keep the floor busy',....If DJ's had to play from behind a screen unable to see the crowd, without the use of a mike, I wonder how many of the 'ego' hunters would be bothered with it at all?. Then you would find out where the 'Real Soul' players would come from!

Know Soul, Know Happiness, No Soul, No Happiness.

Given that I haven't got a clue what people mean when they go on about ' Real Soul' then no I'm probably not a true fan of whatever genre that might be. If what you're talking about is miserable slowies sung by people who sound like they're gargling broken glass then generally I don't like them, so my bones must be filled with unreal soul and that's good enough for me.

Sorry this is as boring as "are you black enough". What actually defines a soul lover per se? does it really make a difference what one collects or listen too, are those of us who grace the dancefloor really need guidance to fashion our tastes? I DON'T THINK SO!!!!!!!!!!!! sleep3.gif Del xx

I can't see the point in comparing Sam to Levine.  They've both had their good periods and both had their bad ones.

It's been over a week now, please tell us the answers :-)

I really can't understand the motive of the post. If we take it as read everybody on SS likes soul, does it matter what tempo they prefer? Within your own collection do you favour soul/ballads over 'stompers'? If so would that make you any less of a fan of soul music? Why do you have to differentiate, tempo doesn't govern soul content, but it does have more of a bearing on northern, because, it's supposed to be danceable.

Winnie;)
