Guest joeythelips Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 While I have reservations about the film I find the above highlighted line so pleasing. Takes me back to 1971 (15 year old) and my thoughts exactly. Hope its the beginning of a life long love affair. Isn't that what it's all about?

Ive slated it already but at the end of the day if im wrong after seeing it I will hold my mitts up and say "I WAS WRONG" but if not then im afraid it will be "FOOKIN TOLD YOU SO". Rick
Guest Dave Turner Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 (edited) Isn't that what it's all about? Sorry, I don't get yer drift. Your comment implies you seem think a film company made a film just to turn folks onto NS? If so I think you're very much misguided. They're a film company, they make films with one ultimate goal ------- to directly or indirectly to make money. That's fine, that's business but I'm under no illusions its being made solely for the good of the NS scene. Must go, gotta put put me bags and badge festooned vest on to watch Paul O'Gradyand his Wigan show. Edited February 27, 2009 by Dave Turner
Guest MBarrett Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 It seems like the Ipso Facto "road show" is moving on to Birmingham next Monday - I just picked this leaflet up this afternoon. Are test screenings like this - before the film is complete - normal??!! I never came across it before. It does give the impression that these folk are TRYING to get it right!! Anyone going be sure to allow a couple of minutes to find the Library Theatre - it isn't the most obvious of places. MB

I'm afraid that's your cynical view. My comment reflected how amazing it was that someone discovered the music for the first time through the film (remember when you popped your NS cherry?), and that's what great music is all about. Whether it's disovering disco through 'Saturday Night Fever' or metal through 'Some Kind of Monster' or classical music through 'Shine', that's the power of films inspired by music, attracting new people to discover it's treasures long after the artists are gone. And judging by the other films this company has made, they don't seem to be in it for the money. Nor do I believe they've made it soley for the good of the Northern Soul scene. I'm guessing they're making it for as many people as possible, and perhaps to bring the scene to those who have yet to discover it.

As for the film, personally I'm one of those that would rather there never was any film, any newspaper articles or any other type of "general" media covering the NS scene, but that's me and my opinion. Ok, I may be a hypocrite as I enjoy seeing the Wigan etc clips on Youtube but it's obvious that the camera nearly always concentrated on what I always saw as the div side of the scene ie 20 twatty badges on a bag or down the trouser leg, backdropping just for the cameras etc etc as if we all did that. I'll be the first to put my hand up and say "good film mate" if it is a good, mostly authentic film but from experience of the NS scene being portrayed by the popular media I'm, like others who been around for a long while, cynical. Yes, the film may attract a few who will become "diehard" Northern or Soul fans and I think that's great I really do but I remember so many sightseers who, after the cameras, newspapers etc came in, became "I'm a Northern Soul fan" can now only remember two records "Night Owl" and "Footsee" and dropped the scene and the music after a year or two. I'd rather they never heard of NS and the popular media left us alone. The NS scene thrived before the cameras etc but that was in the day when we were admittedly a lot younger and the NS scene was different to anything else and was exceptionally EXCITING. If the scene was as exciting today, as it was in the era the film is made, there wouldn't be any need to try and attract new blood, it would do itself. If I were to see a film about the NS scene I'd rather it be in documentary form made with the SERIOUS intent of portraying the scene as it really was warts and all. The passion of "dying for the week-end" to come, the gear, the obsession with records, the risking life & limb in the US tracking down records, the getting rolled in the bogs, the death of mates etc etc etc, put together and narrated by someone with a good knowledge of the scene like Stuart Cosgrove https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuart_Cosgrove and not a fictional love story with a NS background. Hey, but this is all my opinion, some will share it and others won't. It's what makes us all individuals. Edited March 2, 2009 by Dave Turner

WOOOOOOOOAAAAAA there Neddy Whilst I agree with most of what you say I take great umbrance at being classed as a divvy coz I wore badges etc. That was what we did that was what the Wigan scene was about. You make It sound like there was a two tier class system the divs who wore the badges and bought the spencers etc and danced to the Joe 90, Tim Tam & the Turn Ons or 9 Times out of Ten. Then the CHINSTROKERS who were music anoraks. You and anyone else who went know thats a load of bollox. The real divs were the ones who were there to roll ppl in the bogs etc etc. The real soulies wore those badges with pride. They can now 30yrs later still say WITH PRIDE ........I WAS THERE!!! Rick

Rick Rick, sorry to you and anyone else who perhaps takes offence, my sincere appologies. It was perhaps written in haste as I remember I also used to wear badges in the day but just a couple at most, how many others wanted to wear was their perogative. I knew many folks who wore loads of badges etc. I was trying to get across, badly as it turned out, that there were those who came onto the scene after seeing it on the box etc, got all the badges etc and then POOF! within a few months they'd gone. Which they had an absolute right to do but possibly saw it as a fad. Again sorry mate (and anyone else), gonna grovel away now. Guest MBarrett Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 O.K. - gonna nail my colours to the mast - I enjoyed it!! I think it came in at about 1 hr 20 mins. It had an intimate/local feel to it rather than trying to be a blockbuster. There was some humour, some violence, a love story and some brilliant MUSIC!! I thought it worked on all those levels. I wasn't counting but it felt like there was bits of about 20 different tracks - all originals. Even a bit of classical at quite a key point in the film. I thought that was brave. They were quite open that there is some dialogue and music still to add. Can't answer for that but what I saw last night worked. IMHO. As in Newcastle there was questionnaire and focus group discussion. I believe only one person voted it less than Excellent or Very Good. (was that the same in Newcastle??) One obvious long term soul fan said they would have been happy if it was an hour longer. I would happily sit through it again tonight. Some of you will hate it - that's guaranteed - not me! As for the title of the film. It is very much undecided. They said that "Souled Out" cannot be used as it is the name of a band and has been copyrighted. Seemed to be some support for "Out On The Floor" - interesting!! Release likely to be around September time. MB P.S. Cameo role for "Les Battersby" from Corrie. That tickled me.

Guest MBarrett Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 who's that..."russ" No. Russ was one of the 2 mates who have the key roles in the film. Played by Alfie Allen. Bruce Jones (AKA Les Battersby) was just one of the guys working the door at the Casino. Non-speaking part. Seeing him there amongst otherwise unknown actors just struck me as funny. MB
Guest MBarrett Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 Who plays Mrs Woods? Cheers Pete Rick No idea - she was only on screen for a few seconds. But they had obviously picked up on the need to give this venerated lady her brief moment of glory. MB

At first hearing the name change I thought the title was just 'northern soul' and didn't give it much merit for being creative... realising its 'A Northern Soul' makes a huge difference and is much more poignant and now works for me actually..... it has much more meaning and is very apt covering the music and the people this way... like it! I'm 'a northern soul' and a tortured one!
Liljimmycrank Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 Who plays Mrs Woods? Cheers Pete Rick My mate's Nan. He's a regular at nighters all over.....think his nan's too old for it though.

But they had obviously picked up on the need to give this venerated lady her brief moment of glory. MBShe can be likened to many an artist who became famous after death. Mrs Woods is proberbly better known now than she ever was when snatching yr money and snarling at you as you tried to get past the bouncers lol. God bless her. Rick
Barry Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Well said Rick. In one mate. Jealousy is a bad thing.
Barry Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 In one mate. Jealousy is a bad thing. I still get more pleasure in my mind from my baby years, my Bobby Paris years than any given moment on here right now. Yesterdays Soulie I may be - but today I am at peace. Keep The Faith!
Mark Bicknell Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 anyone take a camcorder in? Priceless Dawn, now that would just about put the tin hat on this if it was bootlegged, still why not often everything else is on this scene....lol Regards - Mark Bicknell.
Guest Scarborosoul Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 Like most other films Mark it will end up on Usenext. Rick
Guest MBarrett Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 anyone take a camcorder in? They were VERY wise to that. All mobiles had to go off etc. etc. The Library Theatre is a fairly small place. I think if anyone had tried anything like that it would have been obvious. I think you're right - it's quite a clever title. On one level it's very basic - and on another there's a sort of "double-pun" going on. We were asked for comments on some other possible titles. Some were just TOO awful. "Heart and Soul" & "Soul Dancer" seemed outside possibilities. But the best of the rest IMO was "Out on The Floor". Most likely they will stick with "A Northern Soul" but if it does end up as "Out On The Floor" - you heard it here first!! MB
Guest MBarrett Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 Just been for my Saturday morning run - so a bit more blood pumping to the brain cells than normal. Decided that this film needs a title and a subtitle. So it goes "OUT ON THE FLOOR . . . . the awakening of a Northern soul". I'm seeing it on the posters already. Come on you Ipso Facto guys - you know you are looking in. Sorted that for you. NEXT PROJECT PLEASE!!! MB
