The Tempest Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 (edited) Ladies / Gents, In the credit crunch times when we're losing jobs , paying off staff , and bosses are generally scaling down and being tw++ ts !!!!! Does anybody have a good story to tell regarding bosses who have " sympathised " with you being involved in the scene or better still, have THEY have been involved and you did'nt know ? Was working for a major retail company in Edinburgh in the early 80's , the main honcho covering the north east including scotland appears for a months staff " clearout " and gets the three departmental managers together stating one job and 4 weeks to prove ourselves , I stand no chance as am only guy and two girls "involved " with line management . Head honcho staying in hotel near me and gives me a lift home , As we get into car he puts on cassette and apologises for the next 30 mins of music , Out blasts The Dynamics - Yes I Love You Baby !!!!!!!!!!, We talked everyday for a monthy about the journey home ,about records , swapped cassettes , people still on scene , Turns out he was a regular at Torch , Wigan and Leeds Central Soul , and turned a blind eye to my poor attendance record on mon morn due to nighters , etc ... Yes , I know what you're all thinking , did I get the job ? No !!!!!!!!!!!! , the git had an affair and went off with one of the girls !!!!!! Edited February 2, 2009 by 123-motown
Chris Anderton Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 A mate of mine at work was the manager at Vava`s during its northern soul heyday....! Chris
ImberBoy Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 I was on a six month tour in Banja Luka in Bosnia, we where in an old metal factory and I had a collection of CD's with me. Each time and I do mean every time, my lads returned from patrol I would play Four Below Zero - My Baby's Got ESP. Most of them would groan and moan but there was one who lad, "Rosy", who would sing along, believe me every one new the words after six weeks of it! I had to travel to Sarajevo one day and told Rosy that he was coming with me, he got to have all the normal perks such as stopping at a roadside bar for a sneaky cold pivo beer, doesn't sound much of a perk but we where dry for six months with severe penalties if we where caught drinking, I was allowed to drink when liaising with the locals as be it their custom. I keep in touch with Rosy and he always reminds me of the time I let him have a beer on the road to Sarajevo, he says it was the sweetest taste he had ever had, I just say "My Baby's Got ESP".
Guest Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 Ladies / Gents, In the credit crunch times when we're losing jobs , paying off staff , and bosses are generally scaling down and being tw++ ts !!!!! Does anybody have a good story to tell regarding bosses who have " sympathised " with you being involved in the scene or better still, have THEY have been involved and you did'nt know ? Yeh, it's happened a few times. When I worked at Makro, the Head of IT at the time came speeding into the car park with Bill Bush - I'm waiting blasting out of his car which surprised me. When I asked him about it, he showed me a Ginger Taylor comp CD and started trying to explain to GT was. Turned out he used to go to Wigan etc and he lent me loads of great CD's I didnt have and it changed how we got on. He went from being a reserved and serious manager to a relaxed, chatty nice guy. Happened a couple of times at the brewery too, a fairly stuffy and serious finance manager at another site became a regular email friend when we got chatting about northern soul. It really is a great ice breaker and opens up colleague's personallities. We had a fairly polite but quiet manager on our site too, by chance somehow got chatting about music, he did us some tapes of NS and I saw a different side to him, got to know him and he turned out to be a right nutcase!. I remember people on the site (office staff and security guards) thinking it was strange because at bank holiday's he'd park up at work, wander into Manchester, be out all night at one of then northern soul nights (The Ritz) and just be heading back for his car when the morning shift were already in. lol. Davetay Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 I worked at Taskers in Accrington from Sept 71 till Feb 82. In Nov 74 I got busted outside Samantha,s in Sheffield. When the day came for the court case I rang in sick, but when I got there the case was put back to a new date. The day after at work the boss asked me how I had got on? Than he told me he knew where I had been. I thought here goes I,am gonna be sacked, but no his words we are all young once. Than asked if I needed a solicitor when I go back, I told him no thanks. He also knew about me buying records and he lent me money to buy a few times when I was buying alot at once. E.G. Carl,s Ginger,s Neil&Stewart,s I cherry picked all their collections when they sold in the 70s. BOB TASKER RIP He was a good boss.
