Paul K Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Hi, JUST THOUGHT WHAT MY BEST TRADE OVER THE YEARS WAS. I CAME UP WITH ME TRADING HUNDRED POUNDS OF PAIN BY LENNY WELCH ON MAINSTREAM TO RICHARD SEARLING FOR DONNA KING TAKE ME HOME AND £30 AT THE CASINO AROUND 1974 .NOW LENNY WELCH IS GOING FOR AROUND £10 BUT DONNA KING......WELL THATS ANOTHER STORY.BUT I AM NOT SMUG NOW AS I SOLD IT FOR £6 A FEW YEARS LATER WHEN IT WAS BOOTED AS IN THOSE DAYS WHEN A RECORD WAS BOOTED THE ORGINAL WAS WORTHLESS OR SO WE THOUGHT. Benji Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 About 10 years ago I got a DJ copy of Four Perfections for a UK London demo of Sammy Ambrose Welcome to dreamsville. I know that Sammy Ambrose is probably rarer than Four Perfections but I only paid 20 quid for it off Catford Chris

I know that Sammy Ambrose is probably rarer than Four Perfections but I only paid 20 quid for it off Catford Chris Impossibly rare on London I'd say, being as it came out on U.K. Stateside There's a great R&B flip on 'Dreamsville' as well (Monkey see, monkey do) that's started getting reactivated spins on the Mod/R&B scenes recently, and will no doubt increase it's current value with the Northern and R&B collectors chasing it for different sides.
The Tempest Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Being a collector of albums , when Ruby Andrews went massive I swapped the 45 , ( which I paid a fiver for ! ) for a mint sealed copy of the album Black Ruby with the track on it , PLUS £250 cash , Bargain

Marc Forrest Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 That qualifies for one of the most bizarre trades, Marc.. ! Mike must have been at a low point, no clean socks, starving ! Nice deal ! Tell you, it was a very "funny" and strange situation with him back in the day. He had just started to collect again but had to hide his new 45s at home because of the girl he was back then living with. About every two or three weeks he phoned me to "sell up" again, only to start again the week after..really really strange. Had the pockets full of dosh one week only to be totally stint the next week. Always had the next big deal and business idea just around the corner. One of his best was when he (not being able to talk German) founded a business language school shortly after the wall had come down in the wild east. It lasted a month if I remember correctly. Great memories. Marc

Rich B Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 (edited) A Masters "I need your love" on Crimson for a white dj of Rose battiste "Hit & Run" + an un defaced Malibus plus £25. Masters cost me 10p from my cousin! And, a Bobby Hutton LP ABC dj for a short bottle of Bells whisky. KenDarge was the lucky recipient of the Masters, Steve Phyllis had played it to him covered up apparently. I did once get an issue of the Gypsies "It's a womans world" for £1.38 as it was all I had on me! Last story; Keb & Guy got themselves into a bidding war for a copy of "Tenderiser" Wilbur Reynolds (£1.50 from Soul Bowl) I went straight to Manship and bought a Billy Woods with the proceeds. It wouldn't happen now would it? RB Edited February 2, 2009 by Rich B

Fact is it happened waaay back in '75 I think but I do know those two records changed hands but there may have been cash involved as well possibly......? However, in the interests of fair play, it's only fair to point out that Arthur extracted his revenge 100 times over when he managed to unearth an incredible hit @ Monarch Pressing plant in L.A. in the late 70's! I'm still smarting from that 'cos I'd been there at least 20 times in '76 and never ever saw any room with the records he brought back (although that's where I found the Si Hightower T.P.)..... It's all swings and roundabouts Maria but there's a few folk on here who would love to hear about some of Arthur's finds over the years! Please give him my regards and hopefully I'll see him @ Prestatyn..... Ian D

I THINK WE POSSIBLY GOT TWO RECORDS PLUS SOME CASH FOR IT
Guest j-g Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 I've traded many records over the years, though I never got something crazy rare in trade for next to nothing. However, I once traded some knowledge on how to pack and ship records for a mint original copy of the Rising Storm LP with a real estate dealer from New Jersey, I think. Sold it on for the equivalent of £2k back when I was still in high school.
Arthur Fenn Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 Hi Ian, actually hi to all cos this is my first post on ss . That was a great night! the look on your face when u came down the central steps with your hareem and there,s little old me ( i was 19 at the time ) playin a real 4 perfections, say real cos it had been played for a few months on dodgy accetates supplied by mr sousson. Paul ( samplat ) is correct cos i think 3 of us used to get nice bits off the very nice Bob Cattaneo, it was funny cos i used to ring Bob every 2-3weeks from my Mums on a sunday night and this one time he says hey! you know a 45 called i,m not strong enough ? Hmm might do i said, $5 came the reply. A week later my Mum bless her is called to open the package cos i was shaking. Anyway think we all left the Central happy that night and it couldn,t have gone to a better home . Tell you what tho, doesn,t come close to the swap i did with Jonathon Woodcliffe, my rare 12 black & white spiral of Chic "La Freak" for a very fetching lacoste cardigan in lime green ( just the thing for golf ). Cheers, Arthur.

Kev Moore Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 i,ve got a doubler of Frank Casper. What would you want for it? Sorry I don't have any football cards these days. Best I could do is a postcard of The Marcels singing 'Blue Moon'. But there's no chewing gum with it. Let me know if you're interested. Kev

Cheers, Arthur. Hi Arthur, Yep, I can still remember my heart virtually stopping when you unveiled the record. I don't think I'd ever seen such a beautiful sight in my life LOL. I didn't realise (or I forgot) you got it off Disco Bob. And it's true, it really couldn't have gone to a better home back then. What a record mate. A million thanks some 33 years later! Could have done with you on here sooner mate. There's a "Greatest Record Finds Of All Time" thread over on the All About The Soul section and you'd be a natural for that. I'd still love to hear about that Monarch hit 'cos it still bugs me how I never found it! Anyway great to hear from you. Let me know next time your playing down South or whether you're going to Prestatyn again. I'm still laughing at when I went up to the DJ that was playing Ernest Mosely at gig in London and said to the guy "I used to have that" and you said "I know. You sold it to me you plonker"..... Anyway welcome aboard mate. You're in good company! Ian D

Tomangoes Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 In the good old days around 1979, before all this info tec/internet/ etc, it was possible to get the soul bowl list on a Wednesday and a Manship List on a Tuesday and compare notes. It was then possible to buy for example Whisky Talkin from soul bowl for a tenner and trade it with Manship who had it on his list for Twenty five quid, for another record for twenty five quid, that was also on soul bowl list for twenty five quid and the end result was you could end up with a universaly accepted twenty five quid record that you paid a tenner for. Did you get all that or should I go over it again.? Anyway, it was good fun at the time!!!! Some of us have seen these credit crunches before, so we are ready to build a great collection at half the price. Ed

Then traded it for The Temptones "Girl i love you" WDJ off Joe Dunlop, in March 2006. Has an edge chip, but got to be worth the £40. For a £4-500 record.
