Dave Moore Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 Ian, Can you tell me who the United Four were? I've seen the Center City video of the remake of "She's Putting You On" and know the group were from Chester, Penn but that's about it. Oh and one of the original members may have been an Albino named Jesse? Any details about the group?

Dave f.............. Hi Dave, Thanks for that Mate. Maybe Ian can clarify the two unknowns? Bob Bosco is currently working on a piece featuring the group. Sure be good to have more info about them. For me, they sort of encapsulate the sweeter side of the Harthon Team's style. I know they were auditioned by Motown but they never heard back. Probably didn't need another four/five man vocal group by that stage eh?

Oh and one of the original members may have been an Albino named Jesse? Any details about the group? I have no idea. Weldon McDougall said he'd organise it and he did. My assistant Adi just turned up to Weldon's house and filmed them. Weldon owned Harthon, Weldon said he'd put together the United Four as best he could, and I just let him get on with it. I know at least two of the originals had died. I figured if Weldon owned the label, they'd be official.

Neither Johnny or Luther could recount who the group were either when I interviewed them. The hunt continues.

Guest Jimmy Scriv Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 As this thread is entitled a question for Ian Levine I have one for you. I attended the Blackpool Tower event last night Mecca to Motown's 50th. Wayne Hemmingway did a spot and played Barry Manilow Copa Cabana. Although a lot of people jeered after he played it I have to confess I thought I heard it played at The Highland Room on one occassion and remember Les Cockell laughing. Was it played? and if so was it a wind up. Incidentally the Tower Ballroom was packed and its a shame you did not do a spot.

It was Les Cokell who played it once when I was in America, and then kept nagging me to play it. He was entirely responsible. Not the Mecca's finest hour - on a par with Colin playing "Tear The Roof Off The Sucker" and "Cocaine In My Brain" - OH DEAR !!!!!!!!! - and to think it was Pete Haigh and Bryan Wakelin and Epic who kept egging him on to play such dross - UGH.........

I categorically wish to state that I never ever encouraged the playing of Dillinger - I am sure Messrs Haigh & Wakelin will bear witness that I could not stand the record. Their opinion is not for me to give comment on & to be fair Ian I think we also encouraged Colin to play the odd bit of quality now & then

Cunnie Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 on a par with Colin playing "Tear The Roof Off The Sucker" and "Cocaine In My Brain" - OH DEAR !!!!!!!!! A Knife, A Fork, A Bottle & A Cork! Must confess to spinning Dillinger myself right from it first getting released right through to last November at the Wakefield dayer. The rooms reaction was priceless. Half of the folks were bobbing up & down to it & the other half just didn't get it at all & were sat there like this Suppose if it's good enough for Curtains it's good enough for me. Think I'll have to bring it to Morecambe in May just for you Andy Well worth watching the video below even if you hate the record with a vengence to see the guy dancing in the street to it & then go & check out some of his other video's. Great stuff
