I genuinely apreciate really good Soul music from all eras... and I too am perfectly capable of deciding what I like - with or without the halo! I actually prefer Soul music from the 60's... but consider myself fortunate to be able to hear some good in all eras. What's not to like about that? Now, will someone pass me the polish! Guest posstot
I'll tell you what I hate most about this scene, although I'm not too sure wether it is the scene's fault or just the fact that being involved within a scene brings about certain reactions from people that are socially unavoidable. Anyway. A lad I know, that will be known to some of you, who got into the Northern scene late...who, since his inception......... .....That's what i can't stand, the opinion; "lads"...."late onto the northern scene" ...."since his Inception".. The slightly older Generation who think because they went to, Wigan, were the founders of the "Northern Scene" and anyone younger than them are not, attitude, because we were here first. .....What about the enthusiasts who went to the Wheel and The Torch ( for example ), do they belittle you because you weren't there. Because, there are probably a lot more years between them, and the LAD you talk of Barry.... Come from behind your cloak...WHOM is this lad, let him defend himself!!! Ady Croasdell
I never liked the music much, or the trousers for that matter. I mainly got into the scene to improve my UK geography, which was, quite frankly, appalling. So I spent 25 years learning the ropes - could navigate from the M1 to the Wilton Ballroom whilst blindfolded, guided a minibus of locals to the Shotts allniter without a wrong turn, got to the Ritz without ever ending up in Canal Street, parked on a sixpence within 100 yards of the 100 Club, could tell you which motorway services had the best coffee and toilets. You name it, Logic Woman could get you there. Then some bastard invents SatNav... I know what you mean Theresa, I'm the same with the dishwasher; still like to do a good bowl of pots by hand. Hi, I know you go back a long way, but why are you so prejudiced againt local soul nights? In fact under your avatar it says something like no local shite for me. What if you can't get to the Burnley all nighter, or some other big, somehow non-local do? Do you mean I can't go the Burnley all nighter, cos to me living in Burnley, it will be local shite? Do you not recall the local nights that ran from Sunday to Thursday almost everywhere? The weekend was for the Wheel, The Torch, Up the Junction, Cats, Casino, Samanthas, Mecca, Yate, Stafford etc, but the lifeblood of the scene was people going to these local nights and then developing their knowledge and hitting the big stage. Dave Moore put a list on here of all the soul nights held in Burnley over the years, and it came to over 25, and he missed some out. Dickie Pinks, a tiny working mens club where around 12 of us turned up every month for a year, had Karl, and John Atkinson playing their hearts out, but that was no local soul night shite, it was class. Just interested as to what you mean by local shite? Link to comment Social source share

Personally, I like all eras myself but I dont look down on people who only like 6ts or only Modern. Why would I? Its just musical preference and not indicative of their entire personality. Its very shallow to judge people for their musical preferences and whilst you accuse people with a broad taste of sanctimony you are actually guilt of it yourself. I've got mates who hate Soul but I like them for other reasons. There is a lot more to individuals than their taste of music. What I most hate about the Soul Scene is some of the shite people talk. The invented "rules" and the snobbery and elitist attitude of some folk. I consider myself a Soul fan and dont get wrapped up too often in boring scene politics as quite frankly there are much more interesting things happening in the real world. When I do go out to a nighter or event it is to dance, hear tunes that pick me up, have the crack with nice people but not be stuck in a corner intellectualising about the "scene" and judging people for their personal tastes in music. I just ignore any sh1t and dont get involved in it. Its boring and life is too short. Edited February 4, 2009 by andyrattigan Link to comment Social source share

The only thing i don't like about this scene is that i live too far away from it and attending a soul event literally takes a weekend of my time, costs a bloody fortune and consists of a real "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" type of journey so when i get there, i just enjoy myself and appreciate the fact that i'm actually there soaking in all this music and atmosphere. You don't realise how lucky you really are! Hi Paul, Even though I live in the UK the hub of the scene, I cant afford to go out every weekend as I live in Brighton and there's not much going on here regularly. Even if there was I only like to go out every couple of months as that way I really cherish the night outand the music. By limiting going out I think one doesnt take for granted the wonderful aspects of the scene, which is mainly hearing wonderful music. Link to comment Social source share
