Drew3 Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 I just can't stop playing this since I got a free CD that it's on at A Taste Of Honey last week. Many thanks Chris and Carlos, some nice tunes on the disc that are new to me. What I can't decide is if Some Kinda Wonderful is new to me. The tune by the Del-Royals is new to me, if you know what I mean. Has this song been done by someone else before The Del-Royals or been a bigger hit for someonelse? It's very Motownish to my ears and I keep thinking David Ruffin or the Temptations but can't find anything. Is it a Motown record? The only song with this title in refosoul is by The Soul Brothers Six and is a completely different song which I have heard before. I've googled SKW and The Soul Brothers Six record comes up along with records that are not soul but have used this title. The title/phase SKW has been used in other soul records I'm sure but I can't fathom if I've heard this tune years ago. Please would some kind person post a sound clip if possible (maybe Capt Morgan would kindly do it) as this tune is (using my favourite Phrase for great tunes) FOOOKIN' AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The arrangement on this is breathtaking IMHO. I love the piano in the breaks and the horn near the end. The vocals are superb. Soundclip please someone. KTF Drew.
Guest MBarrett Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Drew A bit confusing this - as I believe there are at least 3 soul tracks out there called "Some Kind of (Kinda) Wonderful. There is one by Marvin Gaye on the album "In The Groove" - TML 11091. It's not the same tune as the Del-Royals but it has a classic Motown production vibe so it's just possible you are thinking of that one. Somebody out there is also confused as I have seen 2 of these different records credited with Goffin & King as writers. That seems pretty unlikely to me. MB P.S. IMHO all 3 of these absolutely cracking tracks

Guest MBarrett Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 Just getting my head round this!! The Marvin Gaye track, I think, is the genuine Goffin/King one. Original recording by the Drifters in 1961. Atlantic 2096. MG's version much superior IMHO. Will try and sort out a sound file some time. MB
