Just got a call from a journalist from a Norwegian news paper. He wants to go over to UK to write an article about Northern soul. thumbsup.gif

He asked me where to go, what has been running long and so on. I told him to go to 100 club, but he also wanted to go north, so, what is the "biggest" soul club in the north?

He wants to go to both 100 club and a club in North. If possible the first weekend coming up.

Shame about the dates because Kings Hall, Stoke is a stunner of a night and a stunner of a venue.

I'm sure you all would take good care of this guy

I promised to find a good northern soul club up north which has been running for some time and which is well attended. I only know 100 club, never been up north before.. blush.gifunsure.gif

He asked for this weekend, but it can be within a month.

EDINBURGH has a Big event on this weekend !! 3 rooms I believe and always packed. Joans djing??

King Georges Hall Blackburn this Saturday, massive stunning venue, 3 rooms, always a 1800 sellout,

That'd be a good one.(if you can get tickets).

Twisted Wheel will be on this weekend. Not huge but it's certainly been running a long time and it's a good one from a journalistic point of view.

(I think.. unsure.gif )

or another week and you've got Prestwich on - now in it's 10th year.

Correct Jayne, may still be ok but not for much longer, (tickets for KGH)

Prestwich next week was my next suggestion,

Ah, you see - great minds, etc. rolleyes.gif

I thought KGH had already sold out. (That's just an assumption though)

Steve has a point too, Winsford would be a good one to visit.

Burnley is on the same weekend as the 100 club in February, so he could do both. thumbsup.gif

Stormin' Soul Allniter @ Citrus Rooms, Barnsley is this Friday.

Granted we are not one of the biggest capacity venues or indeed longest running...

BUT

We are definitely fresh, exciting and have a reputation as one of the best niters on todays scene.

It really depends what the journalist is after though. If he wants to know what the niter scene was like in a retrospective view then maybe he should wait for Kings Hall.

But if he wants something representative of the scene today and he wants to do it this weekend then Stormin' Soul is probably the best bet thumbsup.gif

Thanks all of you

I'll get back to you asap, but I have a 3 month old kid here that I need to look after this evening  Please let me know dates and which city, and especially if it's on the same weekend as 100 club

Sorry to make things more complicated, but:

What's his agenda as a journalist? To represent the scene truthfully, or how we might like him to see it?

There are several strands within the (Northern) soul scene and it depends really what he's looking for as a journalist - the best/coolest nights (which is kind of subjective)? Or the most popular or culturally representative nights?

If he wants a good view of what the scene is about, he's going to have to visit more than 2 clubs.

For instance, the one problem with just doing (say) Burnley and 100 Club is that they are not representative of just how big and popular the more MOR events are.

And what about the endless small 'local soul for local people' clubs running all over the Midlands and the North - they are arguably the lifeblood of the scene, and though perhaps a little conservative and unglamorous he may want to mention them.

Posted

I mean, covering several strands just on that specific 100 club weekend on the Friday in the Manchester/Leeds area - and these are just the ones I've visited; I can't comment on the others:

Burnley is the best event (IMNSHO), intimate and atmospheric with more adventurous music.

Brighouse is a great representative of the popular oldies scene. Good atmosphere, normally very busy.

Beat Boutique in Manchester - young and vibrant crowd, but more of a nightclub thing with some good young dancers and a fresh NS-centred sound, but lacking the dancefloor discipline that's an important part of the NS culture. But good copy.

The biggest nights in the country that weekend (I think) will be Stoke Kings Hall on Saturday (is that the North of England, though?); Brighouse on the Friday.

I haven't yet been to the 100 Club, but I would have thought Stoke/Burnley would be more representative of what its all about from a journalistic perspective, and a better combination for a visit if restricted to that weekend.

How about Twisted Wheel this Friday where the scene began and Burnley for how it is now?it's a shame he's missed Middleton.

He should vist a good amount of clubs in this country to get a feel of what Northern soul is all about

if i am not correct don't Cleethorpes still have big attending nights on he could go there and write not only today but how much of a legend the club was back in the day, not sure of the name think it was the pier.

I would guess Edinburgh is as close to London as any of the places mentioned

Its 40 minutes to fly from london and 4.30 by train.

The bumping and stomping oldies night is 2 minutes across from the train station.

The guys who run it Shaz and jolly Jolly for one used to dj at Wigan and shaz goes as far back as the early 70,s

He will also meet a lot of the Dundee and Aberdeen boys, thats dedication for you
