Great Finds

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure if there is a thread for this already, but if not it should go on for years this one.

The subject is your greatest Northern soul finds over the years, I'm sure we're going to hear some top stories of junk shops, Charity shops etc, so bring it on.

I'll start the ball rolling with what I think was an excellent find back in the 'Torch' days.

I went to the 'Torch' one week and I think it was 'Martyn Ellis' played 'The Shakers - One wonderful moment' The Monday after I went into my local second hand records shop, not 100 yards from where I lived, and found 6 copies all for 50p each on the import label 'ABC'.

I took them to the 'Torch' the saturday after and sold 5 of 'em for £20 each, was a massive tune then and well sought after. Not worth owt near now I know as all of a sudden there were millions of 'em floating about.

My next one goes back about 3 yearswhen I was looking at some guys rock and roll collection on Ebay from the States. Amongst the usual Elvis and Chuck Berry records I noticed a Demo copy of 'Solomon King - say a prayer' (we all know what the 'B' side is) I contacted him and offered him £30 for it and he accepted, it was near mint. I stuck it on the bay about 6 months later and it want for £119. Not too shabby.

off yer go then, your turn.

Steve

Last year I pulled Vikki Styles on Odex out of a box of country & polka 45s for $3 at a local store. Some of the other highlights from the last couple of years for less than $5 each have been The Intentions on Tiki, both Little Bucks on Seven B, Nature's Time on CEM, The Sinceres on Pzazz & a bunch more I'm blanking on right now.

Yvonne Baker demo for $50 in San Francisco about 8 years ago, the guy had two but I somehow knew he'd only sell me one.

Mind you the hotel lost my Boss suit so it wasn't really that cheap.

I also got 6 copies of Ace Spectrum for between $1 & $4 so maybe that helped offset it all laugh.gif

My best find has to be whilst going through an American doo-wop list I received regularly 8 years ago. Whilst going through the list, the following caught my eye:

TURBINES: We Got To Start Over. CENCO VG+ $10

I Emailed the dealer, half-expecting him to say that it had sold. But no! I got a reply saying it was available, and that it was held for me. Well, I sent off my money by post and two weeks later, received it. His VG+ was MINT minus! Anyway, to cut to the quick, I held on to it for a few years before parting with it for £800 trades, which included a mint Eddie Foster on IN, plus others.

I've had some good luck in my time, but nothing to match this!

Tommy Dodson on Main Sound for 50p from the Record and Tape in Shepherds Bush circa '99 wasn't a bad find (also picked up the John McCain on witchsbrew in the same sitting) Sold Dodson to Japan for about £350 a year later - sure I saw the self same copy on a record store wall in Japan! Hardly a find as such but the Black Truth Band on ebay for under $25 wasn't a bad result - that also went to Japan for a grand a few years later.

Best find in the U.K, a "Mikki Farrow", original, in a record shop in Northampton. Was only 5 - 6 years ago, found in amongst loads of pop stuff, funny thing was the owner of the shop did have his records categorized soul, funk, 60's and 70's pop.

He had some boxes under the Lp racks, I asked if I could look through, he said, "what you looking for" when I said, "soul", he said "I was wasting my time as his next door neighbour was Cliff Steele and he had been through the lot". Still I looked through and in amongst loads of U.K 60s pop was the "Mikki Farrow" thought it must have been the bootleg which is very similar. Checked the run out groove and see it was the stamped orig, couldnt believe it.

"How much for this" I asked."50p" was his reply, handed over the dosh and made a sharp exit biggrin.gif phoned Cliff that night :):shades:

Back in the day mid 70s, me and a mate named Craig use to go down to London about once every 3 weeks or so, It was my old nan god rest her soul that said why don't you go to portabello road theres lots of market stalls there that use to sell records, so we went down there and she was right about 20 / 30 stalls selling secondhand / used records, got tons of stuff that was massive at the casino, PJ Proby - you cant come home again - Liberty 10 copies. Bobby Goldborough, She chased me. 8 copies - United Artists

But the best finds were not on the market but in a tiny little shop that sold second hand clothes/ Bric-a-brac Stateside demos, Betty Everett I can't hear all nice r/w, Tamla motown demos The Originals, Goodnight Ireen g/w, all for 10p each, told a couple of other lads and they started to come down, Tom(Becket) on ss, and John washborne(washy) they couldn't believed we found the Aladins cave, tom came away with a load of Orielle stuff, Like gold dust in those days... In more resent times at car boots got the brothers - are you ready for this -rca, main ingrediant, Jackie Wilson early stuff on coral

I'd be lucky to find any 7" records of any kind these days at car boots, but they do turn up from time to time

Off of GEMM about 4 years ago I got a near mint single sided demo of Spanish Maiden by Tony Middleton on Storm for £15ish (allowing for the exchange rate), the seller sent through saying he was having a half price sale and was I ok that it would be about £8 that he'd throw in free postage.

Also off of there got a PYE acetate of Name It And Claim It by Darryl Stewart for £20 and sold it on Manships auction for a tidy turn around.

Used to get loads of great stuff off of GEMM a few years ago

About 15 years ago in Wisbech Cambs , I found a few USA 45s on a car boot for 10p each. Two of these really stood out for me, I'd never heard them before or even seen them listed anywhere. They were 'The Huns Revue' on Sorro and Donald Height 'Rags To Riches To Rags' on Honey....put them on tapes and CDs over the next few years for mates. Both have since become fairly in-demand and can command £150/200 each.

For us living in the US, the deck will be stacked way in our favor here. I don't know if it would be 'sporting' to post all the stuff I've found.

Just 4 days ago, Charades "Key To My Happiness" promo/demo for $3, Seattle record show

In the past couple years:

Eddie Foster - I never knew - 50 cents (Eugene, OR)

Monique - If You Love Me / Never Let Me Go (gold) for 25 cents, and there were other Maurcis and odd Chicago stuff in the same lot for the same price (Oregon again)

Sandi Sheldon - You're Gonna...(Okeh demo) 25 cents, Seattle record show

Jimmey Soul Clark - I'll Be Your Champion, $3, same show as Sandi

It does take hard diggin' to get these....
