Mark S Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Just a thought , would Motown still have been as successful if artists like the Four Tops , Temps, Marvin Gaye , Smokey Robinson , Supremes etc didnt exist ? and they had to rely on the talents of lesser known artists like Freddy Gorman , Bobby Taylor , The Originals , Brenda Holloway etc .
Guest soulboy Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 They shelved some great acts just paying them a weekly wage J J Barnes for one ,Hasnt our world lived off this side of motown for years,If every soul record had been a chart hit then where would we be now ?

IMO probably not! Without the big hitters I think Motown might have been "just" another Detroit label. Most people, (i.e. non soulies), can name the big hitters and some of the hits they made but ask em if they've heard of the likes of Bobby Taylor, Originals etc and they won't have a clue
