Sunnysoul Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 (edited) A hypothetical here. Let's just say that a major new weekly allnighter starts up, and, for the sake of the discussion, it is centrally located in either London or Manchester. Let's say that it's a top venue, 1,500 capacity, with all the right facilities. Let's also say that most of the generally respected DJ's play there each week covering the whole rare soul spectrum and pleasing everybody's tastes in soul. The question is: would you attend every week ... more or less ??? No need to comment whether you think such a weekly allnighter would ever work in the present day and age, or that it wouldn't even get off the ground these days for whatever reason. Just answer the question: would you attend each week and support it ??? Edited January 13, 2009 by sunnysoul
Guest Roddy Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 (edited) hi i live in scotland and for the last few years i have spent about 3 out of every 5 weekends at allnighters down south and in europe and it would have to be something special to detract from middleton, lifeline, wilton ,bidds and the 100 club. Roddy Edited January 13, 2009 by Roddy
Dave Rimmer Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Just answer the question: would you attend each week and support it ??? I'd attend, if I wasn't DJing somewhere else, if The 100 Club wasn't on, if Rugby wasn't on, if Middleton wasn't on, etc, etc. So I might manage it once a month sometimes.
ImberBoy Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Let's just say that if I lived not too far from say London or Manchester and that Let's just say that our lass wouldn't cut my balls off and Let's say that it's a top venue, 1,500 capacity, with all the right facilities then Let's also say that I may go, Let's just say. Hasn't this been tried? Didn't Edwin Starr have some thing to do with a venue called The Casino 2 or some thing? I'll be honest and say that I kick the ring outta going to nighters because I know that I am getting older and one day in the future I will be unable too due to age. I can't see a weekly nighter ever getting the northern crowd weekly in massive numbers like the Casino coz we aint got it in us any more, the spirit is willing but the flesh is week.

Little-stevie Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 A lot could depend on who was promoting the event ... A weekly niter could work but it would be full of handbaggers and piss heads to fill a place that size...
Guest Matt Male Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Just answer the question: would you attend each week and support it ??? No
Carol Phyllis Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Couldn't manage an all-nighter every week. It takes me a fortnight to recover from one now. My life would be a permanent daze
Pauldonnelly Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 I have problems getting off me sofa for a soul night mate let alone a weekly nighter....
Guest Roddy Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 No no no no... Stevie was that gigi and the charmaines or the human beinz ??
Maark Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Nope No. Too much else on to stick to one venue.

Just answer the question: would you attend each week and support it ??? No as back in the hey day Wigan the crowd was younger, nothing else to do it was your life and as I use Wigan as an example it was not always the same people there every week. Scottish crowd WIGAN, ABERDEEN, DUNDEE, STIRLING ECT. Also when I was younger it was the music to be into but how many freinds did you grow up with and went to venues and have been no where for over 20 plus years it would never work.
Stubbsy Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 No! Getting out 2-3 times a month to Soul do's is my limit as I've also got "family" commitments, which most of the other good people on here will have!
Liamgp Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 A travelling event might be more desirable if difficult to do in practice I imagine. Each month in a different venue in a different part of the UK and Ireland. Top DJs and local DJs appearing etc. Maybe like a lot of people I'm limited to going anywhere really due to work commitments on most weekends and all the usual adult responsibilities so once a week? No.
Drew3 Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 (edited) No. It would add to an already oversaturated market and would soon loose appeal and numbers. KTF Drew. Edited January 13, 2009 by Drew3
Guest Dr Pickles Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Not for me. I'd go about 4 times a year. It's the travelling to different nights that keeps it interesting. Meeting different friends all over the country. Hearing different DJ's playing different sounds. The same venue week in, week out would drive me mental. Doc
Stevie Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Personally no. DJs would have to be top drawer for a weekly event to work without being bogged down listening to same old, same old. Back in the 70's this was achievable.....not sure it's possible now.

Doc I agree with Doctor P for exactly the same reasons. Even though we go out every weekend its the variety that keeps it interesting and fresh. I love the journey to different places. So no......... Only then would you get maximum support. Start a weekly niter and you'll pi$$ off so many promotors and their resident DJ's and they're regular's or those with an interest in rival events that your name would be mud and your event would never get the support required. Politically - suicidal. I know you said no need to comment but I did anyway. Attend each week? unlikely unless I win the lottery. Support it? depends what it is. Jayne.x

Guest spudmurphy Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 the point was made earlier in the thread not everyone went to wigan every week but it was still full if the place was bouncing every week with the best of everything then id go once a month

sid jones Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 hi cost me to much to fly home every week so thats a no
Guest Matt Male Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 The response seems pretty unanimous. Come on Sunnysoul enlighten us, why the question? Something in the pipeline?
Guest Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 hi cost me to much to fly home every week so thats a no Sorry no : I have to be back in the home for 12.30 AM , as the nursing staff lock the doors then ......... Malc Burton
Mak Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 YES.........................................................I mean NO sorry
Guest familytree Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Think your asking the wrong people! ( dont know why i get that feeling?) of course its a NO due to our age but there are young people out there into soul going out every week... nice underground scene, get them guys interested and you may have another wigan on your hands?... then i may pop in once a month! x

Just answer the question: would you attend each week and support it ??? I asked a similar question on here a coupla years back, and got a resounding no. Now the miserable old b*stards are two years older, what sort of reply are you expecting. Remember, Sheridans was open every week-nights promoted by different folk though- and that good little venue wasn't packed week-in week-out. ATB Tony

Phild Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 no not a chance Not even with a badge once a year as well?

It's bugger all to do with age, there are plenty of people of our age (Dave Rimmer for example) who go somewhere different every weekend, it's to do with plenty of competing venues. When there are so many great places to go, who wants to spend their saturdays at the same venue every week? Edited January 15, 2009 by Matt Male
Guest Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 What if it was free admission? And all the DJ's were paid a minimum of £150-£200 for their 1 hour spot? Phil Still a no from me I think. Putting a niter on weekly with free admission and paying DJ's that sort of cash?... well you'd have the support of many 'mercenary' DJ's I guess but crickey - you'd be 'swimming with the fishes' in no time... (so to speak) Does make me wonder though, when you mention big DJ fee's.. Imagine if the soul scene got like the premiership - someone with the cash to support their idea came in from outside the current scene and decided they wanted to be the biggest and the best promoter or run the biggest and best club, would the folks on the scene see through it? would people care?.. Could it happen?... sorry - OT. Jayne.

No thanks...I hardly ever go anywhere but, whilst I would love to go out more frequently, I would rather not go to the same place every week...I think it would get a bit monotonous...and take it from me I am very familiar with monotony
