The new British feature film Clubbed will be launched in UK cinemas on Friday, January 16th. The cast includes Mel Raido, Colin Salmon, Scot Williams, Shaun Parkes, Maxine Peake, Ronnie Fox and Aicha McKenzie.

The acclaimed film is directed by Neil Thompson and co-produced by Martin Carr. Executive producer is Paul Abbott, the former Coronation Street story editor who was executive producer of Shameless (Channel 4).

Clubbed is based on Geoff Thompson's award-winning book Watch My Back which has been reprinted to coincide with the film release.

The film has a 1980s clubland gangster theme and an exciting soundtrack featuring soul, funk and Jamaican ska. The original music score is by Paul Heard.

A soundtrack album will be released on CD by Formosa Music, distributed by PIAS, on January 26th.

The album features some of the more obscure tracks featured in the movie - such as 'Blowing My Mind To Pieces' by Bob Relf, 'Train To Tampa' by Sam Dees, 'Twenty Years Later' by Bobby Hutton, 'I'll Get Off At The Next Stop' by Carol Anderson, 'Cram' by Tony Cook and others by The Gladiators, Dorothy Norwood, Bobby Purify, Loleatta Holloway, Jackie Mittoo, Roland Alphonso and Nine Ton Peanut Smugglers.

The music for Clubbed was selected by director Neil Thompson working with music supervisor Olav Wyper and music publisher Paul Mooney who acted as a consultant.

To coincide with the cinema release, Mooney's company Selecta Records is releasing a limited-edition Sam Dees single featuring 'Train To Tampa' on their Shotgun label subsidiary. Selecta / Shotgun are also reissuing 'Twenty Years Later' by Bobby Hutton and have scheduled a limited issue of 'Blowing My Mind To Pieces' by Bob Relf who passed away last year. The soundtrack album is dedicated to Relf's memory.

Hello Baz,

Clubbed is based on Geoff's own story and Coventry is the setting so I think you'll enjoy it.

Best regards,

Paul

Fantastic Paul. I like your Selecta/Shotgun labels. It really is great to see the affiliations you have with PRS/PPL/MCPS/AIM cited here etc. Good to see that the production will be paying/agreeing terms on behalf of writers, sound recording owners and the like. Very professional. I need to speak to you about the PPL...I may drop you a line! Also do you register your releases as 'sound recordings' anywhere for copyright purposes?

Hello Rick,

I don't read NOW so I haven't seen their review but the film has received glowing reports from others and has been described as the best British film for many years.

British Film magazine said "catch it early unless you want to be one of those sad people who missed out on the excitement of being among the first to surf the wave of admiration for Trainspotting or Clockwork Orange and all that these two films did for British cinema."

I saw a pre-screen copy about a year ago and I enjoyed it. It's a strong drama.

Thanks Carl,

All releases and licensed tracks are given ISRC numbers which (apart from vinyl) are embedded in the digital masters. This helps track airplay and downloads etc and it enables performers to gain PPL income.

Looking forward to catching up with you soon.

Best regards,

Paul

Hello,

Just bumping this thread up because today is the UK cinema launch day.

More cinemas may be added to the list on Monday.

The soundtrack album will be released on Monday 26th January on Formosa via PIAS. Copies are in the warehouse now and will be used for promotion at cinemas etc. The album features 16 tracks featured in the movie. I'll post a full tracklisting later.

A digital-only edition of the soundtrack album will be available soon via iTunes etc and will feature six extra tracks.

For those who don't go to cinemas, the film will be released on DVD in a few months.

Best regards,

Paul Mooney

Hello Rhino,

I'm glad you enjoyed it so much.

I bet you never expected to hear "Blowing My Mind To Pieces" on the big screen!

It's very effective and moving but it's a shame Bob Relf didn't live to see the finished film. That's why we've dedicated the soundtrack album to him.

I'm sending a copy to his mother, she'll be very proud.

Paul

P.S. You must have been one of the very first cinema viewers.

the sound track was in total keeping with the film and the scene were the lad is getting a beating was very graffic but also in keeping with the story. i wish they would have done the scene were they get revenge in the pub it would of inhanced the ending but a vey good film none the less. is there any plans to do an uncut version of the film when it comes out on dvd?

Only one star in the Guardian!

As they usually only give five stars to Iranian films dealing with such diverse topics as the heartbreak of losing a favourite goat, the joy of finding a favourite goat, and Goats-the musical, I'd say it must be well-worth seeing.

You've been done by Nigerian scammers. I thought it was amusing and it was based on some film review I read about Iranian rural life.

However, I'll get my goat.

Possibly.

In fact, the cut you saw at the cinema today is probably a bit different to the pre-screen version I'm familiar with. I think it has already been cut down a bit.
