Ian Levine Productions And Songs

Ian, may i ask, what is it?, you are trying to do....As this, i feel, is what disgruntles me about about your end product, in terms of music, I don't understand what you are trying to do. Obviously, I'm from the "some hate it" sect. And a small insight into the above question may shed some light!!

I'm trying to make great records with great singers which artistically appeal to me and also to many people who agree with me.

If you think there's no-one interested, go on YouTube and look through the comments people leave.

So, while you're here, please can you explain something back to me ??

You're being very nice and polite, but you say you're from the "some hate it" sect.

Fair enough.

But why come onto this thread to read it ?? It would be like me going on a Dolly parton thread on a country forum. I can't understand why, if someone is not interested in Ian Levine's productions, why not just give it a wide berth ?? I'm not getting at you, I promise, I'm just deeply curious to find out.

As another example, there's a thread on here called "Mr Day + The Dynamics New Single Favorite Recordings" - it's of no interest to me personally, so I would never bother going into the thread.

People have complained that I'm not spreading myself all over the place on here, but my mind still reasons that if they don't like what I do, they can simply steer clear. You know, Posstot, I so wish that were the case. I hope you also realise I'm genuinely curious at this, and I assure you I'm not digging at you in any way. Please feel free to dislike whatever I do, as long as it's not personal or malicious.

Ian .........

Two questions regarding artists from the motown stable , and SWONS & NSTHGFF - and my apologies if this has been touched on previously .......

Did you approach Chris Clark , and did you attempt to find Connie Haines ?

We did the launch nights at The Ion Bar.

I have to say that the 'live' slots were vibrant and by and large impressive, especially the younger and newer ones. Even if you don't get the recorded material some of these artists are worth seeing.

Ian, thankyou for your patience...

I am aware of your history as a Promoter of Soul Music, The Mecca. Then through your love of the music, you personally endeavoured to be a, more, influential part of that music by persuing a career in, music Production. Working with many soul/disco/pop groups and artists, producers and arrangers. As you mentioned in an earlier post, even writing and "co-writing", original material with some of soul music's greatest. ( YOU JAMMY BASTARD ).

If it wasn't for people like yourself, Russ Winstanley, Ady Croasdell, Pat Brady, Guy Hennigan, Keith Minshull, Tim Brown etc..etc. I would not have come into contact with Soul Music the way i did...Now the way i do! and has been since i was about 11. Finding out about allnighters playing soul music, my brothers were sneaking out to. Hearing the music and finding something in that music that has stayed with me ever since..the soundtrack to my life.

For that reason i do hold people to regard of peers. Doesn't mean I'm gonna kiss there arse when i meet them. Depends if its a nice arse also! ( Also raises the question, Who were your peers, why did you fall in love with soul?).

So, for all of the above i thank you, and anybody else I've met who may just have played me one record i didn't know.

With regards to why i was reading your thread. As i am, in affect, a none believer ! Is because i am the member of a FORUM !! ( "open" "house" "group" "discussion" ). In actuality what you meant to say to me is, with the greatest respect ...." get out then, cause this is a private Ian Levine club, your not allowed to comment, really .Because I'm trying to Discuss Ian Levine productions and songs......not Soul music".

"SOUL"-SOURCE. I don't think i've seen you enter many posts on any other subject...Other than yourself. Even to simply agree on a tune, and its Quality. Or a thread about what soul night/nighter you have been to, the night or weekend before...you haven't joined in group discussions about top tips for 2009, two for the price of one....whats the average age of a northern fan...NOWHERE..ANYWHERE. Then you have the ordacity to come on here advertising your thread as titled...giving me the impression that, as a member of Soul-Source, i am not invited to be invloved with YOUR thread. Cementing that feeling, with the above comments,"But why did you come onto this thread and read it?", and also, further sentences of that effect. As you know. So my point is, i come on here to discuss Soul music( RnB of the u.s ) records, clubs, votes, mp3's, reviews, latest news, and all things related to Soul. Yes, i know YOU are related to Soul for a number of contributing factors.....however,You are getting in the way of me enjoying myself...if i search for rare footage on the internet on you tube, etc. Ian flaming Levine pops up with one of his renditions. I buy a C.D with Northern Soul Memories on it, But it's you and that mixer thingy you insist on using, dubbing wacker wackers all over the shop... . I go to Blackburn to watch the amazing work you have done finding these artists, puttin' video together and what happens...Dobie Gray d d d d d d busch, Hey Hey Hey, out on the floor tonight(WACKER WACKER BUM TISH ARGH YEHHHH!) i feel like singing yehh dum pup du du du pup....

Oh do you know what, i can't be bothered...GO PROMOTE YOURSELF SOMEWHERE ELSE!!

You are, to northen soul, what Jive Bunny is to Rock and Roll......and rock and roll was only white men copying RnB.

I could have been posting useful stuff elsewhere...(sorry mods, but isn't this a forum...for all....it's turning into a forum(Main Hall) Ian Levine (self gratificstion and promotion room). He'll be charging you soon

I'VE GONE AND DONE A RAFA.....

The point being that I would have LOVED to do a big spot of just my own work, but there have been too many detractors who'd have made too much noise about it.

I resign myself to the fact that in 100 years time, future historians of our music will be mystified and perplexed by the way I was treated at the time by many of my contemporaries.

Remember how the Victorians treated Oscar Wilde.

I can see it now, Ian Wilde Levine and Pete Bosie Smith skipping joyfully through the acetates.

There is only one thing in life worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about. Oscar Wilde

Ian,

When the Motorcity project was undertaken in Detroit did you attempt to get the guys to play the music for the recordings? If Earl Van Dyke, Mike Terry, Joe Hunter, Uriel, Dennis Coffey, Joe Messina, and Robert White were around was there no way to bring them into the company in order to keep costs down. A sort of Motown collective with the musicians owning parts of the final product? Imagine having Mike Tery arrange some of the songs! Maybe they weren't interested I don't know. But with such a wealth of talent still in the city (or able to turn up at least), it would seem feasible at first glance. After all, the artists turned up and worked. There's no doubt that the lack of 'real musicians' is, on the whole, one of the perceived weakness of a lot of your output from that time.

I'm aware that I know nothing of the finances of the venture.

Secondly...of the artists that were at the Motown Reunion in Detroit was there any standout artist (s) that, when you heard them sing again you thought...."Now that's something special!" The first time I heard Ronnie Walker sing live he blew me away. After all these years...he sounded even BETTER! Unfortunately on his arrival in UK a year or so later, (with Chris Waterman's excellent NCS promotions), his gigs were badly attended which was a complete shame and lots of people missed out on a wonderful singer.

Not sure where you are coming from by the invading 'our' space comment.

You can either ignore the poster or ignore the thread.

Quite simple really.

You chose to read and reply but thats not intrusive.

I don't enjoy the back biting, on either side, but I do enjoy Ian's narrative about his musical history and experiences.

I made individual records with Earl Van Dyke, Beans Bowles, Choker Campbell, and Rare Earth.

And all of them played on the Motorcity All Stars live recording, including Joe Hunter and Dave Hamilton.

Whatever my thoughts are now, at the time everyone I was working with urged me to keep the recordings modern sounding while still retro, and we spent months preparing the backing tracks and shipped them all over to Detroit.

Nowadays I can take a vocal off whatever tape I want and cut a brand new backing track for it. That's why the C.P. Spencer, and the recent versions of David Ruffin and The Contours all work so well.

Billy Griffin, Pat Lewis, J.J. Barnes, Bettye Lavette, Barbara McNair, Hank Dixon, Carolyn Crawford, Vermettya Royster, Brenda Holloway, Joe Harris, Vee McDonald, and probably most of all, The Monitors.

Was there not an option to bring them on board as 'shareholders' in order to use them on more stuff though? I know it's a while ago and a different time but would you now consider something like that in hindsight?

Tell us more about Earl Van Dyke. Although the mainstay of the band there's not a lot known about the man himself. In the interviews I've read he comes across as a something of a placid, gentle soul. A bloke who kinda rolled his eyes a lot at life's little tribulations. His character seems at odds with his aggressive organ playing! I've seen the video of him with you but is there any video of Dave Hamilton's performances?

We did the launch nights at The Ion Bar.

The one for "Northern Soul 2008" had twenty live acts on, all doing their songs, and Simon White DJing all night only playing my productions.

Lots of members of Soul Source were there, and there was a great atmosphere. It really worked actually. And the more recent launch for the five disc DVD set was amazing. Even Ady Croasdell was there, along with Ron Tyson from The Temptations, and tons of amazing guests.

Oh, now I'm upset. Sean Livesey and I came down to London the weekend before this event and met up with Simon, we had to go home a few days before though and at the time we were disappointed we couldn't make it. Now I'm gutted! I would love to have been there to hear Simon do a spot like that and I'm sure Sean will be devastated to know Ron Tyson was there too.

I have some wonderful video of him playing Motown's greatest hits, with Ivy Jo Hunter singing. It was too dark, but I think some of it is on SWONS, isn't it ???

He was a truly gentle soul, fingers crippled with arthritis, but never stopped playing.

I've got loads of video of him, anyway.

There is footage of them on SWONS yes. With Motown's 50th Birthday TODAY I'm off now to dig a few 45s out that they played on. The Funk Brothers, Earl Van Dyke and The Soul Brothers, The Sound of Young America, It's What's In The Groove That Counts, West Grand Boulevard, The Snakepit, Gaye, Ruffin, Stubbs, Wonder, Reeves, Holloway, Gladys, etc etc etc . The Motor City.......there's NOTHING to compare. I understand what motivated you. Dig out the video of Dave Hamilton if you would, be great to see it.

I dont understand your point ?

I personnally dont like his music but I have come to realise that he loves what he produces and many others actually like what he does musically.

I dont know him, I have never met him so I dont have a view on his character.

All my post was about was displaying good manners ?

And leaving the people who are intrested in Mr Levines thread to get on with it ?

No one has come on to our Jamaican Ska / Reggae forum shouting abuse at us cause its not northern soul ?

I just think enough is enough ............. Just ignore this thread if you have no intrest in the topic !

is that so hard to do?

NOW BACK ON TOPIC................................................................

my point is that he has abused other members and myself in other threads and not once has his ego let him say sorry or say well thats your point of view and move on . he has pissed people off with his replies and thats why people have a problem with his threads. people are watching this thread to see who is the next person he has a pop at

Give him a break ! I am not a fan of his music but a lot of people are.

As said before - If you dont like his music dont read his thread !

Simple !

Others find his new material intresting and I find his tales about the artists etc intresting.

We all use this site to promote our events and soul nights so what is he doing wrong !

Leave him alone and let the man chat with the people who are intrested in his music and his conversation !

Its only good manners for gods sake !

Thankyou Mossy - a truly great post.

It said everything I wanted to say myself, but was unable to, from my feeling emotional anger instead of rational reason, like you did.

In these extreme cases, unlike in the past where I got threads closed down, the only way to get through it is just to let others like yourself answer, and try to not rise to the bait myself.

You have my deepest gratitude here, and my most heartfelt appreciation.

Same here, I do not have the time to go and post on every single thread like a rash, just to be popular?

I look, see what I am interested in, and get involved only if I want to, not because you have to , to be somebody.HUH..

If I wasn't gay, I think I'd be deeply in love with you.

You're just brilliant.
