Diggin' Dave Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 Being the record nerd that I am, I want all 45s from my collection to be in their matching company sleeve, but in many cases it's not very easy to find out which company sleeve is the fitting one for a record. It's easy for labels like GSF that issued all their records in the same company sleeve (I think), but other labels (RCA, Brunswick, Atlantic etc.) with several different company bags are a bit harder. Does anyone on the forum know a good source where I can find out which sleeves fit with a certain record. Maybe somewhere where I can find the periods in which certain sleeves were used, or even better, label numbers between which they were used?
Benji Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 Try Manship's site, for all company sleeves he states the respective period if there is more than one sleeve for a certain record label.
Guest Richard Bergman Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 I don't know of any sites that specialise in this "fetish" but I know that Beatin' Rhythm in Manchester have a large stock of mainstream and obscure labels from different eras.

I think you should join Rod (modernsoulsucks) and I on the "1st 15 records in my box" thread...you sound just like our sort of people. The company sleeves I have I keep filed carefully away. QoFxx

Soul-slider Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 My favourite is the 'U.S.A' company sleeve (basically USA flag) ...a hard one to find.

Diggin' Dave Posted January 8, 2009 Author Posted January 8, 2009 All covers from here are replicas, and not original. Bought a few of those once at a local record fair, but it just doesn't feel right to put my records in those sleeves. They don't really look real too...
Bigsoulman Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 www.covers33.co.uk is good for giving dates used for brunswick, rca etc been using them for ages and their service is superb Agreed....and much cheaper, just bought a load on Tuesday, got them today Lenny

They don't really look real too... Surely depends on the severity of your OCD. Much better to have a Real Record in a repro bag than Vice Versa Tony
Guest Andy Kempster Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Surely depends on the severity of your OCD. Much better to have a Real Record in a repro bag than Vice Versa Tony well said tony, might have to start and OCO (Original Covers Only) crusade
Guest mel brat Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Think manships site has dates on the right sleeves, here's one, does anybody have any info on Aussie releases and the corresponding sleeves?? now that is hard info.. Mal.C I only have one Australian release and it's in a printed bag advertising the record shop that sold it! Perhaps this was common practice?
Diggin' Dave Posted January 8, 2009 Author Posted January 8, 2009 Surely depends on the severity of your OCD. Much better to have a Real Record in a repro bag than Vice Versa Tony Agreed, but I even prefer a plain white sleeve above the 'bootleg sleeves'. In fact I even got up one night because I couldn't bear it anymore and I replaced all repro bag with plain white/brown ones. Before anyone asks...I do have a quite normal social life, but record collecting just seems to bring out the worst in me...
Kris Holmes Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 I only have one Australian release and it's in a printed bag advertising the record shop that sold it! Perhaps this was common practice? This was a reasonably common practice for Australian Record Bars back in the day & may account for the scarcity of many original Australian sleeves. My favorite is the sturdy cardboard sleeve used by the Batman Record Bar!

They don't really look real too... These are good quality repro's not like the photo-copy ones you see at the record fairs. Like has been said though, expensive for what they are. They also sell those clear plastic sleeves to keep your company bags clean. I like the European sleeves.

My favorite is the sturdy cardboard sleeve used by the Batman Record Bar! Got a few Festival issues in printed plastic sleeves. Mid 60's I believe? Motown stuff in printed orange paper, quite common. I might have to ask a fellow I know who collects anything pressed in Australia from the 60's. I'll get back on this one!

I really like the Zodiac sleeves from NZ. I like the HMV/Columbia ones with the BOAC adverts on the back too.
Guest Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Those printed plastic ones are a pain! I really like the Zodiac sleeves from NZ. I like the HMV/Columbia ones with the BOAC adverts on the back too. They sure are! If they've been stored Ok, they can seem to stand the test of time. Still a major pain. Got a few pink NZ Motown sleeves that encourage the buyer to fly Air-N.Z. Hilarious! They match the pink label too!
Modernsoulsucks Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Paper and card versions! I like these UK advertising ones too.... Used to spend many a dinner hour in early 70's looking through Mazel's 45s outside the shop. Couple of years back in a junk shop somewhere down Exmouth way I found one of their sleeves and bought it for old time's sake. ROD
Kris Holmes Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 I really like the Zodiac sleeves from NZ. I agree, the zodiac one with the fortune teller on it is very cool. Those NZ Motown sleeves came in a variety of colors, the most popular seems to have been blue, which doesn't match the pink labels at all

My favorite is the sturdy cardboard sleeve used by the Batman Record Bar! these sleeves are everywhere in melbourne...think there was a store on swantson st at one point. out of interest what are the rare aussie sleeves? which labels?
